Book Shakespeare s Visual Theatre

Download or read book Shakespeare s Visual Theatre written by Frederick Kiefer and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-09-25 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study of Shakespeare's visual culture Frederick Kiefer looks at the personified characters created by Shakespeare in his plays, his walking, talking abstractions. These include Rumour in 2 Henry IV, Time in The Winter's Tale, Spring and Winter in Love's Labour's Lost, Revenge in Titus Andronicus, and the deities in the late plays. All these personae take physical form on the stage: the actors performing the roles wear distinctive attire and carry appropriate props. The book seeks to reconstruct the appearance of Shakespeare's personified characters; to explain the symbolism of their costumes and props; and to assess the significance of these symbolic characters for the plays in which they appear. To accomplish this reconstruction, Kiefer brings together a wealth of visual and literary evidence including engravings, woodcuts, paintings, drawings, tapestries, emblems, civic pageants, masques, poetry and plays. The book contains over forty illustrations of personified characters in Shakespeare's time.

Book Exorcising our Demons Magic Witchcraft and Visual Culture in Early Modern Europe

Download or read book Exorcising our Demons Magic Witchcraft and Visual Culture in Early Modern Europe written by Charles Zika and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of sixteen essays deals with the role of magic, religion and witchcraft in European culture, 1450-1650, and the critical role of the visual in that culture. It covers the relationship of humanism and magic; the intersection of religious ritual, orthodoxy and power; the discursive links between the visual language of witchcraft and contemporary anxieties about sexuality and savagery. The introductory chapter urges us to exorcise our tendency to reduce historical experiences of the demonic to forms of unreason created in a distant past. Only then can we understand the role of the demonic in our historical definition of the self and the other. Richly illustrated with 112 images, the book will interest historians and art historians.

Book Images of Sex and Desire in Renaissance Art and Modern Historiography

Download or read book Images of Sex and Desire in Renaissance Art and Modern Historiography written by Angeliki Pollali and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies on gender and sexuality have proliferated in the last decades, covering a wide spectrum of disciplines. This collection of essays offers a metanarrative of sexuality as it has been recently embedded in the art historical discourse of the European Renaissance. It revisits ‘canonical’ forms of visual culture, such as painting, sculpture and a number of emblematic manuscripts. The contributors focus on one image—either actual or thematic—and examine it against its historiographic assumptions. Through the use of interdisciplinary approaches, the essays propose to unmask the ideology(ies) of representation of sexuality and suggest a richer image of the ever-shifting identities of gender. The collection focuses on the Italian Renaissance, but also includes case studies from Germany and France.

  • Author : Bernadine Barnes
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-07-05
  • ISBN : 1351558277
  • Pages : 232 pages

Download or read book Michelangelo in Print written by Bernadine Barnes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In seeing printed reproductions as a form of response to Michelangelo's work, Bernadine Barnes focuses on the choices that printmakers and publishers made as they selected which works would be reproduced and how they would be presented to various audiences. Six essays set the reproductions in historical context, and consider the challenges presented by works in various media and with varying degrees of accessibility, while a seventh considers how published verbal descriptions competed with visual reproductions. Rather than concentrating on the intentions of the artist, Barnes treats the prints as important indicators of the use of, and public reaction to, Michelangelo's works. Emphasizing reception and the construction of history, her approach adds to the growing body of scholarship on print culture in the Renaissance. The volume includes a comprehensive checklist organized by the work reproduced.

Book A Celebration of Humanism and Freethought

Download or read book A Celebration of Humanism and Freethought written by David Allen Williams and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 1995-06 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some to be chewed and digested." -- Francis Bacon Bacon's memorable insight is specially significant when applied to the wide range of works by some of the world's most renowned writers, poets, philosophers, and intellectuals-men and women whose determination to espouse and defend the cause of humanism and freethought, interpreted broadly, has given us a well-endowed repository of the wisdom of the ages. In A Celebration of Humanism and Freethought, author David Allen Williams has mined this vast body of literature. The result is this priceless treasury of poetry and prose draped in art and rare steel engravings from more than a century ago. Amid its beauty, readers will find a unified call to reason, tolerance, and freedom of expression in opposition to the forces of ignorance, supernaturalism, superstition, and dogmatism. The words of over eighty of the world's most often read and frequently quoted authors are included: among them Aristotle, Matthew Arnold, Marcus Aurelius, Francis Bacon, Cicero, Joseph Conrad, Charles Darwin, Diogenes, John Donne, Will Durant, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Epicurus, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Edith Hamilton, Eric Hoffer, Homer, Robert Ingersoll, Thomas Jefferson, Lucretius, Bertrand Russell, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, George Santayana, William Shakespeare, Mark Twain, Voltaire, H.G. Wells, and many others. A Celebration of Humanism and Freethought is a remarkable collection of compelling ideas and impressive art that deserves a place on every bookshelf.

Book Liechtenstein the Princely Collections

Download or read book Liechtenstein the Princely Collections written by Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York, N.Y.) and published by Metropolitan Museum of Art. This book was released on 1985 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liechtenstein is one of the smallest European states, a principality situated between Austria and Switzerland in the Upper Rhine Valley. The nation is less than three hundred years old, but the ruling family, whose name it bears, traces its lineage back to the twelfth century. For successive generations, members of the Princely House of Liechtenstein have been devoted art collectors. With a high degree of appreciation of artistic achievement, they have pursued a centuries-long family tradition of acquiring not only great paintings and sculpture but also rare firearms, fine porcelain, and other works of art. The result of this tradition is a collection of masterpieces that in its depth and breadth reflects more than four hundred years of European history and ranks among the world's greatest private collections. This publication accompanies an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art that marked the first time the masterpieces from this private collection were put on public display. The rich and varied array of paintings, sculpture, and other works included in this exhibition not only represents the paradigm of a great European princely collection, but also has the added distinction of being the collection of the only surviving monarchy of the Holy Roman Empire. -- Metropolitan Museum of Art website.
