Book The Knowledge Illusion

Download or read book The Knowledge Illusion written by Steven Sloman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2017-03-14 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Knowledge Illusion is filled with insights on how we should deal with our individual ignorance and collective wisdom.” —Steven Pinker We all think we know more than we actually do. Humans have built hugely complex societies and technologies, but most of us don’t even know how a pen or a toilet works. How have we achieved so much despite understanding so little? Cognitive scientists Steven Sloman and Philip Fernbach argue that we survive and thrive despite our mental shortcomings because we live in a rich community of knowledge. The key to our intelligence lies in the people and things around us. We’re constantly drawing on information and expertise stored outside our heads: in our bodies, our environment, our possessions, and the community with which we interact—and usually we don’t even realize we’re doing it. The human mind is both brilliant and pathetic. We have mastered fire, created democratic institutions, stood on the moon, and sequenced our genome. And yet each of us is error prone, sometimes irrational, and often ignorant. The fundamentally communal nature of intelligence and knowledge explains why we often assume we know more than we really do, why political opinions and false beliefs are so hard to change, and why individual-oriented approaches to education and management frequently fail. But our collaborative minds also enable us to do amazing things. The Knowledge Illusion contends that true genius can be found in the ways we create intelligence using the community around us.

Book Models Behaving Badly

Download or read book Models Behaving Badly written by Emanuel Derman and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2011-10-25 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Now in paperback, “a compelling, accessible, and provocative piece of work that forces us to question many of our assumptions” (Gillian Tett, author of Fool’s Gold). Quants, physicists working on Wall Street as quantitative analysts, have been widely blamed for triggering financial crises with their complex mathematical models. Their formulas were meant to allow Wall Street to prosper without risk. But in this penetrating insider’s look at the recent economic collapse, Emanuel Derman—former head quant at Goldman Sachs—explains the collision between mathematical modeling and economics and what makes financial models so dangerous. Though such models imitate the style of physics and employ the language of mathematics, theories in physics aim for a description of reality—but in finance, models can shoot only for a very limited approximation of reality. Derman uses his firsthand experience in financial theory and practice to explain the complicated tangles that have paralyzed the economy. Models.Behaving.Badly. exposes Wall Street’s love affair with models, and shows us why nobody will ever be able to write a model that can encapsulate human behavior.

Lewontin Harvard University Everyone knows that optical illusions trick us because of the way we see. Now scientists have discovered that cognitive illusions, a set of biases deeply embedded in the human mind, can actually distort the way we think. In Inevitable Illusions, distinguished cognitive researcher Massimo Piattelli-Palmarini takes us on a provocative, challenging, and thoroughly entertaining exploration of the games our minds play. He opens the doors onto the newly charted realm of the cognitive unconscious to reveal the full range of illusions, showing how they inhibit our ability to reason--no matter what our educational background or IQ. Inevitable Illusions is stimulating, eye-opening food for thought.

Book Magical Thinking Fantastic Film and the Illusions of Neoliberalism

Download or read book Magical Thinking Fantastic Film and the Illusions of Neoliberalism written by Michael J. Blouin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book analyzes how contemporary popular films with fantastic themes, including Candyman, Frozen, The Cabin in the Woods, and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone, cultivate neoliberal subjectivities. These films promise dramatic change, but they too often deliver more of the same. Although proponents maintain the illusion that the militant enforcement of freemarket economics will resolve racism, climate change, and imperialism, their magical thinking actually fuels the crises. Magical Thinking, Fantastic Film, and the Illusions of Neoliberalism explores the ways in which the visual economies of Hollywood fantasy compliment this particular political economy.

Book Philosophical Delusion and its Therapy

Download or read book Philosophical Delusion and its Therapy written by Eugen Fischer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-01-25 with total page 565 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophical Delusion and its Therapy provides new foundations and methods for the revolutionary project of philosophical therapy pioneered by Ludwig Wittgenstein. The book vindicates this currently much-discussed project by reconstructing the genesis of important philosophical problems: With the help of concepts adapted from cognitive linguistics and cognitive psychology, the book analyses how philosophical reflection is shaped by pictures and metaphors we are not aware of employing and are prone to misapply. Through innovative case-studies on the genesis of classical problems about the mind and perception, and on thinkers including Locke, Berkeley and Ayer, the book demonstrates how such autonomous habits of thought systematically generate unsound intuitions and philosophical delusions, whose clash with reality, or among each other, gives rise to ill-motivated but maddening problems. The book re-examines models of therapeutic philosophy, due to Wittgenstein and J. L. Austin, and develops an approach that may let us overcome philosophical delusions and the problems they engender. In this way, the book explains where and why therapy in called for in philosophy, and develops techniques to carry it out.

Book The Rise Of The Antichrist

Download or read book The Rise Of The Antichrist written by Kamran Faqir and published by Troubador Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Rise of The Antichrist carefully investigates the measurable effects of politics, religion, science and technology on the human psyche. All mainstream religions traditionally share similar perspectives regarding the Antichrist and his developing systems, which have been foretold by all prophets or messengers dutifully sent to every nation over time. This book carefully explores the much-debated topic of the Antichrist, regarding his future emergence. Will he lead humanity to eternal darkness, or enlightenment? Although modern science and human history popularly refer to the last 5,000–15,000 years of development, in reality, there are signs and evidence that human development is considerably older, with possibilities of supernatural or otherworldly intervention. This book explores stories such as the Nimrod who meticulously researched into longevity and occult magic, with a possibility of alien or supernatural influence which was captured on stone glyphs. Throughout history, there have been developed, mighty empires whose chosen kings proclaimed to be Gods... But were they actually inter-dimensional beings? This book will ideally suit readers with an active interest in religion, historical events and those interested in a thought-provoking read.
