Book The Iliad

Download or read book The Iliad written by Geoffrey Stephen Kirk and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1985 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first volume of a projected six-volume Commentary on Homer's Iliad, under the General Editorship of professor G.S. Kirk. Professor Kirk himself is the editor of the present volume, which covers the first four Books of Iliad. It consists of four introductory chapters, dealing in particular with rhythm and formular techniques, followed by the detailed commentary which aims at helping serious readers by attempting to identify and deal with most of the difficulties which might stand in the way of a sensitive and informed response to the poem. The Catalogues in Book 2 recieve especially full treatment. The book does not include a Greek text - important matters pertaining to the text are discussed in the commentary. It is hoped that the volume as a whole will lead scholars to a better understanding of the epic style as well as of many well-known thematic problems on a larger scale. This Commentary will be an essential reference work for all students of Greek literature. Archaeologists and historians will also find that it contains matters of relevance to them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iliad of Homer, Vol. 1 of 2: Translated The two Qualities which I have desired most to retain are those of rapidity of movement and directness of speech. A translator cannot, indeed, like a poet, have his eye upon the object' only; it suffices for him to have it upon that image of the object which is presented to him on the mirror from which he is reading. But whenever, penetrating beyond the mere words, he has that image clear before him, he will, in the case of Homer, have attained the first element of directness of style. Rapidity of move ment, on the other hand, is a matter of versification. I concur with those who hold that the sonorous march of the ancient hexameter lies beyond the reach of the English tongue; even the most successful Eng lish examples of that measure proceed de z'rzz'flo on a vital deviation from the classical rhythm. With respect to blank verse, it has been urged by artists of a critical skill and knowledge greatly superior to my own, that, strong as its claims on all other grounds are, there is one consideration which compels any save the greatest masters to renounce it. For it is the non imz'tabz'le fulmm of the rarest poets only; even they only gain their command over it at the ripest period of their lives; and to wield it with sustained force through a long work requires a strength which is exceptional in a generation. I believe this to be true of one form of the measure, but of one onlythe Miltonic. But in a translation of Homer we have not to deal with that form. Its elaborate and com plex harmonies, even if they could be attained, would be, as Mr. Matthew Arnold has shown, inappropriate in rendering a poet whose grandeur consists in an unique simplicity. And I have sought only to attain a far humbler style of verse, in which many lines together are seldom dovetailed into each other, and in which the paragraphs are not often longer than they are in the original Greek. Such a form, I have thought, might be within the range of a much more moderate artist, and yet, when fed with the noble subj ect-matter which Homer supplies, might naturally mount to sufficient elevation to give pleasure to the ear of the reader. But it is with great doubt and difiidence that I submit my solution of such a pro blem to the opinion of the public. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Sing, Goddess, of the wrath of Pēleús’ son Akhilleús, the accursed wrath that caused Akhaíans countless woes and hurled headlong To Hāḯdēs a host of heroes’ souls And left their bodies spoil for dogs and all The birds of carrion. The will of Zeús Was brought to pass from when Agamémnōn, The Lord of men, opposed the consummate Akhilleús. Which God was it that set the two At odds?” So begins the Íliad, Homer’s epic song about the invasion of Troy by a force of Greeks led by Agamémnōn, King of Mykḗnē. They are seeking revenge for the abduction from Spártē of Helénē, the most beautiful woman on earth, by Páris, Prince of Troy. The walls of Troy seem to be impregnable and the fortunes of the Greeks are further set back when their greatest warrior, the fleet-of-foot Akhilleús, falls out with King Agamémnōn and withdraws from the battle. The Íliad recounts what happens in the next fifty days at the beginning of the tenth and final year of the war. By the end of this first volume, the fortunes of the Greeks are at a low ebb. The Trojans are storming the Argive wall and breach it to pour through and fight close to the ships, though Akhilleus still refuses to join the battle. This new translation adheres closely to the original text, rendering it in iambic pentameter, with attention to the dramatic similes characteristic of Homer. A detailed Introduction is provided together with Notes for Books I-XII.

It has been said that the business of a translator is to enter so fully by attention and study into the mind of his original, that he may, as it were, look on every thing with the same eyes, and feel with the same soul. The author of the following attempt to render into English blank verse the sublime work of the father of poetry, is indeed. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Iliad of Homer, Vol. 1 of 2: Translated Into English Hexameter Verse by Prentiss Cummings; An Abridgment Which Includes All the Main Story and the Most Celebrated Passages This translation comprises about half the Iliad, and includes all the main story and nearly all the most cele brated passages. The abridgment was not merely to save work. The omitted parts with few exceptions are inferior in literary skill and interest, are irrelevant to the plot and unduly delay its action, and in the opinion of the translator are mostly interpolations or later addi tions. Apart from these considerations the Iliad is much too long to suit modern taste; and its inordinate length, even in ancient times, became a proverb both in the Greek and Latin tongues. The scholar who cares little for the story as a whole, and likes to pick up the original for single passages, and the student and antiquarian who read it for special purposes, find the Iliad none too long, but with the ordinary reader it is otherwise.
