Book The Ignorant Philosopher

Download or read book The Ignorant Philosopher written by Voltaire and published by Newcomb Livraria Press. This book was released on 1922 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation directly from the original French manuscript of Voltaire's 1766 The Ignorant Philosopher. This edition also contains supplemental material on Voltaire including an afterword by the translator, a timeline of Voltaire's life and works, summaries of each of the works in his corpus, and a glossary of Philosophic Terminology used by Voltaire. This is the work which contains a line that still resounds 200 years later- "If there is no God, it would be necessary to create one." "Le Philosophe Ignorant" is a reflection on what we know and can know about the world (Epistemology), and the practical implications of this knowledge for our lives. Like many of Voltaire's works, and The Ignorant Philosopher is also a mimicry of a classic work- Descartes's Discourse on Method (1637). It is a Cartesianism-infused reflection on Epistemology- a first-person narrative summarizing his doubts and how he overcame them in the pursuit of truth. He discusses his development on the the fallacies of philosophy, the absurdities of religion, the field of Metaphysics and inherent a priori forms, and whether morality can be universal. Voltaire printed this edition in both French and English, but this edition is translated into Modern, readable English from the original French.

Book Understanding Ignorance

Download or read book Understanding Ignorance written by Daniel R. DeNicola and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2017-08-18 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ignorance is trending. Politicians boast, "I'm not a scientist." Angry citizens object to a proposed state motto because it is in Latin, and "This is America, not Mexico or Latin America." Lack of experience, not expertise, becomes a credential. Fake news and repeated falsehoods are accepted and shape firm belief. Ignorance about American government and history is so alarming that the ideal of an informed citizenry now seems quaint. Conspiracy theories and false knowledge thrive. This may be the Information Age, but we do not seem to be well informed. In this book, philosopher Daniel DeNicola explores ignorance -- its abundance, its endurance, and its consequences.

Book excerpt: Deliberate ignorance has been known as the ‘Ostrich Instruction’ in law courts since the 1860s. It illustrates a recurring pattern in history in which figureheads for major companies, political leaders and industry bigwigs plead ignorance to avoid culpability. So why do so many figures at the top still get away with it when disasters on their watch damage so many people’s lives? Does the idea that knowledge is power still apply in today’s post-truth world? A bold, wide-ranging exploration of the relationship between ignorance and power in the modern age, from debates over colonial power and economic rent-seeking in the 18th and 19th centuries to the legal defences of today, The Unknowers shows that strategic ignorance has not only long been an inherent part of modern power and big business, but also that true power lies in the ability to convince others of where the boundary between ignorance and knowledge lies.
