Book Ethics and the Good Teacher

Download or read book Ethics and the Good Teacher written by Andrew Peterson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-04-29 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethics and the Good Teacher brings together reviews of existing literature and analysis of empirical data from three research projects conducted by the Jubilee Centre for Character and Virtues – The Good Teacher, Schools of Virtue and Teacher Education – to explore the ethical dimensions of the teaching profession. The book is premised on the idea that what constitutes a "good" teacher involves more than technical skills and subject knowledge. Understood as a professional activity, teaching involves an important ethical dimension, a fact that has come under increased scrutiny – and some would argue increased threat – over recent years as education and schooling have become shaped by market logic and accountability. Addressing the influence of personal and professional character on teachers and teaching, and containing clear implications for policy, practice and research, this book will be of great interest to teachers and other professionals working in education settings, as well as those working in educational policy. It will also appeal to academics, undergraduate students and postgraduate students researching the teaching profession and ethics/morality in education more generally.

Book The Ideal Teacher Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ideal Teacher Classic Reprint written by George Herbert Palmer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ideal Teacher On the whole the American people are sincerely and deeply appreciative of their schools and teachers. The teachers themselves are for the most part contented in their work, strenuous and baffling as it may be. And whatever may be said of the shortcomings of teaching as a lite, they stand loyally by it. In spite of moments of pessimism, they seldom change to another work, so tenacious are its ultimate attractions. But it would be quite wrong to assume that either the public or teachers have no just criticism to make upon the life and the product of schools. The educational ideals, and consequently the expectations of both, are too high to permit a smug satisfaction with things as they are. The layman wants better service from teaching. The teacher wishes a happier life in his work. They will probably continue to demand these till the end of time, though the schools grow constantly better. There is no ungratefulness in this attitude; it is part of the idealism that attaches to the work of schools and keeps them forever progressive. Book excerpt: Professor Palmer in that excellent little monograph on "The Ideal Teacher" has given us just such characteristics as we would like to have for the teacher of agriculture also. His ideal teacher would have an already acquired wealth, he would be master of the subject matter and have a large margin beyond what he could use in the classroom. He would have an aptitude for vicariousness. To him the matter would be very clear from the pupil's standpoint. A third quality suggested is that he should have ability to stimulate life through knowledge. By the way he uses his fund of knowledge in the classroom he gives more abundant life to his pupils. Lastly, this teacher is willing to work and to be forgotten. He is not watching the dial of personal popularity and seeking commendation so persistently as to lose sight of his subject and class in the glare 0 his own glory. These are high standards, but the teaching of agriculture deserves to be in the hands of just such people.Geographically considered, the subject matter should be regarded as both local and national. It is local in its adaptation to instructional and vocational interests of the pupil; it is national in its social relationships and aspects. This gives the teaching at once an intensive and an extensive viewpoint....

Book excerpt: "This book is a godsend a moving portrait for anyone wanting to go beyond the simplified labels and metrics and really understand an urban high school, and its highly individual, resilient, eager and brilliant students and educators." -- Dave Eggers, co-founder, 826 National and ScholarMatch Darrell is a reflective, brilliant young man, who never thought of himself as a good student. He always struggled with his reading and writing skills. Darrell's father, a single parent, couldn't afford private tutors. By the end of middle school, Darrell's grades and his confidence were at an all time low. Then everything changed. When education journalist Kristina Rizga first met Darrell at Mission High School, he was taking AP calculus class, writing a ten-page research paper, and had received several college acceptance letters. And Darrell was not an exception. More than 80 percent of Mission High seniors go to college every year, even though the school teaches large numbers of English learners and students from poor families. So, why has the federal government been threatening to close Mission High -- and schools like it across the country? The United States has been on a century long road toward increased standardization in our public schools, which resulted in a system that reduces the quality of education to primarily one metric: standardized test scores. According to this number, Mission High is a "low-performing" school even though its college enrollment, graduation, attendance rates and student surveys are some of the best in the country. The qualities that matter the most in learning -- skills like critical thinking, intellectual engagement, resilience, empathy, self-management, and cultural flexibility -- can't be measured by multiple-choice questions designed by distant testing companies, Rizga argues, but they can be detected by skilled teachers in effective, personalized and humane classrooms that work for all students, not just the most motivated ones. Based on four years of reporting with unprecedented access, the unforgettable, intimate stories in these pages throw open the doors to America's most talked about -- and arguably least understood -- public school classrooms where the largely invisible voices of our smart, resilient students and their committed educators can offer a clear and hopeful blueprint for what it takes to help all students succeed.

This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching has been known from time immemorial as a noble profession, to this extent teachers world- over have been perceived to be role models to young up-coming ones within and outside their vicinity. Schools happen to be the workshop for teachers to practice and show-case what they can do, the extent to which they can perform wonders with the material resources they have, though very meager. A lot is expected from every teacher as parents shift their responsibility of behavioral change to teachers` door step. Students spend a lot of time with teachers while a little time is spent with their parents who are scarcely seen at home. However, the role of identifying cognitive display and acumen by students in performing different tasks given to them is noticeable in the school. Teachers identify exemplary behaviors by the total child and keep the record over-time to an obvious level that can be used as reference.

She uncovers the surprising roots of hot button issues, from teacher tenure to charter schools, and finds that recent popular ideas to improve schools—instituting merit pay, evaluating teachers by student test scores, ranking and firing veteran teachers, and recruiting “elite” graduates to teach—are all approaches that have been tried in the past without producing widespread change.
