Book The Ideal Humanity and Other Parish Sermons Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Ideal Humanity and Other Parish Sermons Classic Reprint written by William T. Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ideal Humanity and Other Parish Sermons It is true that, as a memorial, the volume is most incomplete. Indeed, it has been a matter of serious debate whether it were just to his memory to publish it. For the ripeness of the preacher's thought and speech came later than this record. Most of these Sermons were preached between the years of 1869 and 1877. One which gives its title to the book, and another at the close of it, bear the still earlier date of 1865. Whereas, notwithstanding his enfeebled health, the best utterances of the preacher's manhood were given during his very last years, say from 1885 to 1890. But, during these and many preceding years, he was struggling with the fatal malady which finally vanquished him. He became almost totally blind. He could use no manuscripts; wrote nothing; and of his extempore speech, too rapid, as it was found, for a stenographic report, no record was preserved. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Highway of Life: And Other Sermons This text forms part of a great Hebrew symphony. It is a poet's description of an ideal life. The symbolism speaks of the poetry of the road. It is not of the battle of life that the poet sings, nor life builded upon a sure and firm foundation, but life as a journey, along which the wayfaring men of this life travel to the City of God. Life is a highway. There are many ways, and many paths that men travel, but there is only one highway. There is only one way to live the life and come at last to the goal. The right to the way - well, what is it? So far as we know life, the right to the road belongs to the rich in this worlds goods, to the influential, to the powerful, to the privileged. They come to their goal unhindered. The race is to the swift and the battle to the strong. The inspired poet who is looking out upon the highway of life does not so see things. He knows that the verdict of history is that the race is not to the swift nor the battle to the strong. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Christianity has tended to focus on right beliefs and right choices as the keys for personal growth. But biblical evidence and modern brain science show that our character is shaped more by whom we love than what we believe. Through conversations he had with Dallas Willard at the Heart & Soul Conference shortly before Dallas's death, Jim Wilder shows how we can train our brains to relate to God based on joyful, mutual attachment--which leads to emotional and spiritual maturity as our identity and character are formed by our relationship with God.

Download or read book In What Life Consists written by George H. Gould and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-23 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In What Life Consists: And Other Sermons There was no caste under his preaching. Rich and poor met together to praise and to pray. The prayer-meetings, the pulse of the church, were pervaded with a Spirit of love that harmonized all hearts. Much as might be said of Dr. Gould intellectually, his heart was greater than his brain. He had a keen sense of humor which often did him good service. Many a salient truth was sent home, pointed with some bright joke. This keen sense of humor made him the genial companion and the welcome guest, and during his last years he was much sought for as a happy after-dinner Speaker. In closing this sketch we desire to do honor to the memory of his early instructor at Monson Academy, Dr. Hammond, to whom Dr. Gould Often referred as the inspirer of all the ambitions of his life; and who was seemingly the embodiment of all goodness and noble ness. Such examples lift the calling of a teacher to a level with the highest. No doubt Dr. Hammond was greatly inspired by the Life of Thomas Arnold, a book he greatly admired, and was at length enabled to abandon his plan of entering the ministry for the position of instructor, realizing his Rugby at Monson. In considering such a character as the instructor of youth we feel that learning and scholarship are important elements in Civilized life, but manhood and womanhood are vastly more important. Book The Sermon on the Mount and Human Flourishing

Download or read book The Sermon on the Mount and Human Flourishing written by Jonathan T. Pennington and published by Baker Academic. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sermon on the Mount, one of the most influential portions of the Bible, is the most studied and commented upon portion of the Christian Scriptures. Every Christian generation turns to it for insight and guidance. In this volume, a recognized expert on the Gospels shows that the Sermon on the Mount offers a clear window into understanding God's work in Christ. Jonathan Pennington provides a historical, theological, and literary commentary on the Sermon and explains how this text offers insight into God's plan for human flourishing. As Pennington explores the literary dimensions and theological themes of this famous passage, he situates the Sermon in dialogue with the Jewish and Greek virtue traditions and the philosophical-theological question of human flourishing. He also relates the Sermon's theological themes to contemporary issues such as ethics, philosophy, and economics.

Book The Perfect Life Sermons Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Perfect Life Sermons Classic Reprint written by W. J. Knox Little and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Perfect Life Sermons For its teaching is not only Jewish, it is above all things Catholic. All through, there runs an under current of permanent principles, and every now and again these - like Pindar's notion of the river which ran under land and sea from Greece, and came up in sparkling freshness and beauty in the Sicilian fountain of Arethusa - these principles and truths burst up and sparkle in life and brightness, with a power and attractiveness of a new revelation. Not unnaturally, there are many truths in the sermon on the mount which have appeared in other codes of morality put forward by other religions. Not unnaturally, I say, for after all there is but one Teacher to mankind, and that is the Eternal Word The light which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. That Teacher has taught men in every age as man would learn; but here the same great Teacher puts forth in fullest form those high moral laws which, in one way or another, He had to some extent imprinted on the minds of His creatures. Here is the complete statement; here is the comprehensive view. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Sermons Upon Divine Grace and Human Responsibility Classic Reprint

Download or read book Sermons Upon Divine Grace and Human Responsibility Classic Reprint written by C. H. Spurgeon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-09 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons Upon Divine Grace and Human Responsibility Jesus. - 2'timothy i. 13. MY incessant anxiet for you, dearly beloved in the faith of Jesus Christ, is that I may be able, in the rst place, to teach you what God's truth is; and then, trusting that I have to the best of my ability taught you what I believe to be God's most holy gospel, my next anxiety is, that you should hold fast the form of sound words that whatever may occur in the future, should death snatch away your pastor, or should anything occur which might put you in perilous circumstances, so that you were tempted to embrace any system of heresy, you might every one of you stand as firm and as unmoved as rocks, and as strong as mountains be, abiding in the faith which was once delivered unto the saints, whereof ye have heard, and which we have proclaimed unto you. If the gospel be worth your hearing, and if it be a true gospel, it is worth your holding, and our anxiety is, that you should be so established in the faith, that you may, hold fast the profession of your faith without wavering, for he is faithful that has promised. The Apostle most earnestly admonished Timothy to hold fast the form of sound words which he had heard of him in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. I do not suppose that by this it is intended that Paul ever wrote out for Timothy a list of doctrines; or that he gave him a small abstract of divinity, to which he de sired him to subscribe his name, as the articles of the church over which he was made a pastor. If so, doubtless that document would have been preserved and eu rolled in the canons of Scripture as one of the writings of an inspired man. I can scarce think such a creed would have been lost, whilst other creeds have been preserved and handed down to us. I conceive that what the Apostle meant was this Timothy, when I have preached to you, you have heard certain grand outlines of truth; you have heard from me the great system of faith in Jesus Christ; in my writings and public speakings you have heard me continually insist upon a certain pattern or form of faith; now I bid you, my dearly beloved son in the gospel, Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Nature: And Other Sermons Joseph butler was born in 1692, youngest of eight children of a linendraper at Wantage, in Berkshire. His father was a Presbyterian, and after education at the Wantage Free Grammar School Joseph Butler was sent to be educated for the Presbyterian ministry in a training academy at Gloucester, which was afterwards removed to Tewkesbury. There he had a friend and comrade, Seeker, who afterwards became Archbishop of Canterbury. Butler and Seeker inquired actively, and there was foreshadowing of his future in the fact that in 1713, at the age of twenty-one, Butler was engaged in anonymous discussion with Samuel Clarke upon his book on the ti priori demonstration of the Divine Existence and Attributes. When the time drew near for call to the ministry, Butler, like'his friend Secker, had reasoned himself into accordance with the teaching of the Church of England. Butler's father did not Oppose his strong desire to enter the Church, and he was entered in 1714 at Oriel College, Oxford. At college a strong friend ship was established between Butler and a fellow student, Edward Talbot, whose father was a Bishop, formerly of Oxford and Salisbury, then of Durham.
