Indeed, it has been a matter of serious debate whether it were just to his memory to publish it. For the ripeness of the preacher's thought and speech came later than this record. Most of these Sermons were preached between the years of 1869 and 1877. One which gives its title to the book, and another at the close of it, bear the still earlier date of 1865. Whereas, notwithstanding his enfeebled health, the best utterances of the preacher's manhood were given during his very last years, say from 1885 to 1890. But, during these and many preceding years, he was struggling with the fatal malady which finally vanquished him. He became almost totally blind. He could use no manuscripts; wrote nothing; and of his extempore speech, too rapid, as it was found, for a stenographic report, no record was preserved. In considering such a character as the instructor of youth we feel that learning and scholarship are important elements in Civilized life, but manhood and womanhood are vastly more important. The Apostle most earnestly admonished Timothy to hold fast the form of sound words which he had heard of him in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. I do not suppose that by this it is intended that Paul ever wrote out for Timothy a list of doctrines; or that he gave him a small abstract of divinity, to which he de sired him to subscribe his name, as the articles of the church over which he was made a pastor. If so, doubtless that document would have been preserved and eu rolled in the canons of Scripture as one of the writings of an inspired man. I can scarce think such a creed would have been lost, whilst other creeds have been preserved and handed down to us. I conceive that what the Apostle meant was this Timothy, when I have preached to you, you have heard certain grand outlines of truth; you have heard from me the great system of faith in Jesus Christ; in my writings and public speakings you have heard me continually insist upon a certain pattern or form of faith; now I bid you, my dearly beloved son in the gospel, Hold fast the form of sound words, which thou hast heard of me, in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. His father was a Presbyterian, and after education at the Wantage Free Grammar School Joseph Butler was sent to be educated for the Presbyterian ministry in a training academy at Gloucester, which was afterwards removed to Tewkesbury. There he had a friend and comrade, Seeker, who afterwards became Archbishop of Canterbury. Butler and Seeker inquired actively, and there was foreshadowing of his future in the fact that in 1713, at the age of twenty-one, Butler was engaged in anonymous discussion with Samuel Clarke upon his book on the ti priori demonstration of the Divine Existence and Attributes. When the time drew near for call to the ministry, Butler, like'his friend Secker, had reasoned himself into accordance with the teaching of the Church of England. Butler's father did not Oppose his strong desire to enter the Church, and he was entered in 1714 at Oriel College, Oxford. At college a strong friend ship was established between Butler and a fellow student, Edward Talbot, whose father was a Bishop, formerly of Oxford and Salisbury, then of Durham.
