Book The Modern Anthropology of India

Download or read book The Modern Anthropology of India written by Peter Berger and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-03 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Modern Anthropology of India is an accessible textbook providing a critical overview of the ethnographic work done in India since 1947. It assesses the history of research in each region and serves as a practical and comprehensive guide to the main themes dealt with by ethnographers. It highlights key analytical concepts and paradigms that came to be of relevance in particular regions in the recent history of research in India, and which possibly gained a pan-Indian or even trans-Indian significance. Structured according to the states of the Indian union, contributors raise several key questions, including: What themes were ethnographers interested in? What are the significant ethnographic contributions? How are peoples, communities and cultural areas represented? How has the ethnographic research in the area developed? Filling a significant gap in the literature, the book is an invaluable resource to students and researchers in the field of Indian anthropology/ethnography, regional anthropology and postcolonial studies. It is also of interest to students of South Asian studies in general as it provides an extensive and critical overview of regionally based ethnographic activity undertaken in India.

  • Pages : 344 pages

Download or read book Theorizing the Local written by Richard Wolf and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-09-03 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past four decades, the "globalized" aspects of cultural circulation have received the majority of scholarly-and consumer-attention, particularly in the study of South Asian music. As a result, a broad range of community-based and other locally focused performance traditions in the regions of South Asia have remained relatively unexplored. Theorizing the Local provides a challenging and compelling counterperspective to the "globalized," arguing for the value of comparative microstudies that are not concerned primarily with the flow of capital and neoliberal politics. What does it mean for musical activities to be local in an increasingly interconnected world? To what extent can theoretical activity be localized to the very acts of making music, interacting, and composing? Theorizing the Local offers glimpses into rich musical worlds of south and west Asia, worlds which have never before been presented in a single volume. The authors cross the traditional borders of scholarship and region, exploring in unmatched detail a vast array of musical practices and significant ethnographic discoveries-from Nepal to India, India to Sri Lanka, Pakistan to Iran. Enriched by audio and video tracks on an extensive companion Web site, Theorizing the Local is an important study of South Asian musical traditions that offers a broader understanding of 21st-century music of the world.

Book Raj Rhapsodies Tourism Heritage and the Seduction of History

Download or read book Raj Rhapsodies Tourism Heritage and the Seduction of History written by Dr Maxine Weisgrau and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2012-11-28 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Heritage is a prized cultural commodity in the marketing of tourism destinations. Particular aspects of heritage are often more actively promoted, with others played down. The representation of heritage in tourism as static and timeless, derived since time immemorial from a distant past, is seductive. In Asia, a major part of the tourism market lies in the sale and consumption of highly orientalized images and versions of culture and history. In India’s marketing discourse, the state of Rajasthan symbolizes the nation in its heritage-laden, traditional and most authentic form. These images draw heavily on the British period in India – the Raj. In one sense, this vision of Rajasthan is ennobling, highlighting moments of cultural pride. In another sense, it demeans, by omitting and obscuring salient features of contemporary life. This fascinating book explores the cultural politics of tourism through interdisciplinary perspectives. Carol E. Henderson and Maxine Weisgrau demonstrate that tourism heritage privileges elite histories that recapitulate colonial relationships, compelling non-elites to collude in these narratives of subordination even as they advance their own alternative visions of history.

Book Private Participation in the Indian Power Sector

Download or read book Private Participation in the Indian Power Sector written by Mohua Mukherjee and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2014-10-21 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The passage of India's Electricity Act of 2003 was a signature achievement, moving the sector toward amarket-driven approach that forced potential investors to compete aggressively for generation and transmission contracts. India's 2005 National Electricity Policy recognized electricity as one of the key drivers for rapid economic growth and poverty alleviation in the country. Yet the policy's target--electricity for all and 1,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh) available per capita by 2012--was not met. Despite a 20-year reform process and private-sector participation, the rate of resource augmentation and growth in energy supply has been less than the rate of increase in demand. Numerous challenges need to be addressed before India can overcome severe energy shortages and achieve its desired national policy objectives. Private Participation in the Indian Power Sector: Lessons from Two Decades of Experience examines the home-grown Indian experience with private sector participation in power, identifies emerging risks, and proposes specific actions for government consideration, so that the power sector may fulfill its important role in India's growth story. Much has been achieved, and the Indian power sector can rightfully take its placeamong the bold reformers. Yet a large agenda remains, and a more rigorous focus on implementation, particularly on last-mile reforms in the distribution sector, will be required. Close coordination among variousstakeholders and unrelenting attention to efficient execution through decentralized authority to make technical decisions, together with a robust emphasis on monitoring, evaluation, and transparent sharing of data and performance statistics, will help in achieving this objective.
