There is a common understanding the Nordic countries were particularly well-placed to enter the booming telecommunications industry of the 1980s due to a combination of advanced demand, institutional and societal set-ups that characterize these countries. But this e-book suggests that the technological and business setting of the Nordic mobile communications is undergoing fundamental changes wit.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the Nordic countries have in the field of ICT statistics produced a series of projects aimed at describing the influence and development of the Information Society. This work has partly been carried out in collaboration with the Nordic Council of Ministers. Methodological guidelines and publications centred on the development of ICT statistics in the Nordic countries are important results of the Nordic ICT network between Nordic statistical institutes, which was established in 1999 with the purpose to profile and develop statistics in this important area. This publication is the latest result of this co-operation building on its predecessor from 2002 and capturing the development of the Nordic Information societies since then, by including detailed and recently updated official data. Moreover, special analyses in key areas have been included in the publication, which seeks to contribute to future directions in the measurement of the Information Society.

Book Health and Social Sectors with an Gg egg A Study of the Nordic Countries

Download or read book Health and Social Sectors with an Gg egg A Study of the Nordic Countries written by Nordic Council of Ministers and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2005-04-01 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Nordic countries have reached a stage where the national level of development in the use of IT applications has extended to a Nordic level. This is partly a result of the Collaborative Net-work of Nordic eHealth Competence Centres, a voluntary group for experience exchange and common activities regarding ICT in healthcare. However, this Nordic co-operation needs to be strengthened and more structured, with the appropriate re-sources, legal foundation, skills and capacity, to further develop and exploit common solutions. This report is the result of a study carried out on request of the Nordic Council of Ministers, by Ministers for Social Affairs and Health. It has been carried out by the partners of the Collabora-tive Network of Nordic eHealth Competence Centres (Med-Com/Denmark, KITH/Norway, STAKES/Finland, Ministry of Health/Iceland, and Carelink/Sweden). The report describes the use of IT in health care and social services in the Nordic coun-tries. The purpose of the study is to enhance the opportunity for the Nordic countries to learn from each other and to co-operate in a larger extent.

Book From Path Dependency to Knowledge Based Economy Analysing the Finnish ICT Miracle

Download or read book From Path Dependency to Knowledge Based Economy Analysing the Finnish ICT Miracle written by Patrick Lubjuhn and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2010-08 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2005 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: 1,7, University of Münster, course: European Economic Policy Course, language: English, abstract: The fact that Finland is far away from the centres of European economic activities, for example the so-called blue banana, the Sunbelt and the Industrial axe, its relative economic success, especially in the field of information and communication technologies (ICT) makes it so interesting to analyse what is so characteristic for the "Finish-ICT Miracle", as Paija (2001) has called it. During the last decade, Finland has become one of the world's most successful technology-intensive countries, finding itself in the front rank of the world's digital economies. In a decade, Finland went from being one of the least information and communication technologies specialized countries to become the single most specialized one. "Currently the Finnish ICT sector, with Nokia as its locomotive, consists of some 6 thousand firms and accounts for approximately 10 percent of Finland's GDP" (Rouvinen & Antilla 2003, p.87) and therefore have put Finland on the map of global economies. Determining for this "raise" of Finland is the development of a new growth path in this small Nordic country. Finland has managed to transform itself from a resource-based into a knowledge-based economy in a rather short period of time, especially without any major cutbacks in his highly developed welfare state system. The essential point of analysis in my essay deals with the question, how Finland managed to become one of the most successful ICT-countries in the world. How was it possible for this small Nordic country to go through a structural change from forestry to ICT? Nowadays, "about 6000 firms (mostly small and medium-sized) and 200 electronics manufacturing services companies make up the so called 'ICT cluster'. Some 350 of them are first-tier suppliers to Nokia, and repr

Book Digitalisation and automation in the Nordic manufacturing sector

Download or read book Digitalisation and automation in the Nordic manufacturing sector written by Nordic Council of Ministers and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2015-12-07 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the beginning of the nineties, the total employment in Nordic manufacturing has fallen with app. 500.000 persons. In spite of this fall in the employment level, manufacturing still has considerable importance for the Nordic countries. This shows for example in exports, research and development, growth in productivity and the development of rural areas. The report points that manufacturing is on the brink of a new era, called “Industry 4.0.” Tomorrow’s successful manufacturing business will be characterized by the way they are able to integrate new advanced production technology, especially digitalisation and automation. The report goes through status, barriers and political initiatives taken concerning digitalisation and automation in all of the Nordic countries. The report also brings recommendations to common Nordic initiatives and opportunities for co-operation on the area.

Book Productivity Growth in the Nordic Countries

Download or read book Productivity Growth in the Nordic Countries written by and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even small increases in a country's growth rate can result in large changes in living standards over just one generation. This key insight, which often seems to be forgotten by policymakers, is an important reason why the field of economic growth continues to be a large research field. This report provides an overview of the development of labor productivity in the Nordic countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden) since the early 1980s. It also examines if data are consistent with predictions of traditional theories of growth. The analysis shows, for example, that the real wage per employee is positively related to the level of labor productivity - a finding suggesting that changes in relative standards of living have been driven by parallel changes in relative productivity.

Book Digital Transformations of Traditional Work in the Nordic Countries

Download or read book Digital Transformations of Traditional Work in the Nordic Countries written by Rolandsson, Bertil and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Available online: https://pub.norden.org/temanord2020-540/ This report aim to go behind narratives of digitalization as a uniform force of disruption, job destruction and revolutionary change at work, and convey a nuanced picture of digitalization played out at ordinary Nordic workplaces in traditional sectors of work. The report is explorative and the findings preliminary, but the picture emerging is nevertheless sobering. Findings show how digitalization in important sectors of Nordic labour markets are marked by gradual adaptation rather than paradigmatic, disruptive change. The connection between digital technologies and the organization of work emerges as a two-way relationship where institutions and politics still matter. Our empirical observations also suggest that the actors in the Nordic model of work are able to continue to influence this relationship in ways that appear to be compatible with the modus operandi of the model.

Book ICT and Economic Growth

Download or read book ICT and Economic Growth written by Dirk Pilat and published by OECD Publications. This book was released on 2003 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2000, at the height of the new economy, information and communications technology (ICT) was hailed as a technology that would radically transform OECD economies and bring large economic benefits. The recent slowdown has laid to rest several of the myths surrounding ICT: the business cycle is not dead, stock market valuations must be backed by profits, and the ICT sector is not immune to downturns. But this should not distract from the structural changes and economic benefits that have already accompanied the spread of ICT and that continue to this date. This report examines the impacts of ICT on business performance and the policies that can help seize its benefits. It examines the impacts that ICT has already had on economic performance, analyses why some countries have invested more in ICT than others and why only some countries have thus far clearly seen its benefits. It argues that ICT remains an important technology for the years ahead, as ICT networks have now spread throughout the economy. What counts now is how the technology should be made to work. The book argues forcefully that ICT is no panacea but a technology that can help business transform and enhance performance. But this transformation will only occur in a competitive environment, and when investments in ICT are accompanied by organisational changes, investment in skills and good management. The book argues for a comprehensive policy strategy to seize the benefits of ICT.
