Book excerpt: A. L. Graziadei's Icebreaker is an irresistible YA debut about two hockey players fighting to be the best—and the romance that catches them by surprise along the way. Seventeen-year-old Mickey James III is a college freshman, a brother to five sisters, and a hockey legacy. With a father and a grandfather who have gone down in NHL history, Mickey is almost guaranteed the league's top draft spot. The only person standing in his way is Jaysen Caulfield, a contender for the #1 spot and Mickey's infuriating (and infuriatingly attractive) teammate. When rivalry turns to something more, Mickey will have to decide what he really wants, and what he's willing to risk for it. This is a story about falling in love, finding your team (on and off the ice), and choosing your own path.

For the first time in years, Masha has the chance to start living again. But just as Masha dares to imagine the future, her past comes roaring back... Download or read book Wind Fire and Ice written by Robert M. Bunes and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1955 and 1987, the United States Coast Guard Cutter Glacier was the largest and most powerful icebreaker in the free world. Consequently, it was often given the most difficult and dangerous Antarctic missions. This is the dramatic first-person account of its most legendary voyage. In 1970, the author was the Chief Medical Officer on the Glacier when it became trapped deep in the Weddell Sea, pressured by 100 miles of wind-blown icepack. Glacier was beset within seventy miles of where Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, the Endurance, was imprisoned in 1915. His stout wooden ship succumbed to the crushing pressure of the infamous Weddell Sea pack ice and sank, leading to an unbelievable two-year saga of hardship, heroism and survival. The sailors aboard the Glacier feared they would suffer Shackleton’s fate, or one even worse. Freakishly good luck eventually saved the Glacier from destruction in the crushing ice pack, only to experience a three-hour fire that nearly killed one of the crew, followed by eighty foot waves that came close to capsizing the ship. Wind, Fire, and Ice is a story about a physician who starts out with a set of false assumptions—namely that he is going have an easy assignment and see numerous exotic ports, but then slowly comes to realize a much different hard reality.

Download or read book An Icebreaker written by Leonid Tokarsky and published by Contento de Semrik. This book was released on 2014-08-24 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This true story happened in the 1960s, at a time when the USSR was in a Cold War with the western world. The Soviet Navy obtained a new "sophisticated" weapon - the nuclear submarine with its short range rockets, which allowed access to the US coast, by way of the North Pole, from under the ice. A group of young people, who had just recently graduated from the Leningrad Shipbuilding College, were taken by the Soviet navy (involuntarily and unknowingly) on a suicide mission. The navy needed technical professionals able to take care of the imperfect and dangerous new submarines. The young people were assured that there was no danger in those operations and were ordered, by their commanding officers, to treat nuclear reactors as safe normal radiation mechanisms. There was only one sailor-technician from this group of involuntary die-hards, who survived: The author of this book. This incredible and true story of survival involving Soviet submarines, nuclear disasters and escape from the claws of the Soviet Secret Police has become a case study in a specialized branch of the Israeli Army Intelligence Corps. The book was written and published first in Russian, then translated and published in Hebrew and now translated into English. The Russian version won the "Olive of Jerusalem" Literary Award and medal in the category of "Personal Courage" for 2011. "I read your book and what you went through is enough for ten people to get shell-shock." -David Ivry, President Boeing Israel, VP Boeing International, Former Israeli Ambassador to the United States, General-commander of the Israeli Air Force (IAF) and Director of the Israeli National Security Council .."..The title in Russian - by Leonid Tokarsky became a bestseller and will certainly require a couple of more editions in the long run." -Michael Beloshevsky, Gen Manager, Sputnik Publishing House Ltd.

Book Polar Icebreaker Roles and U S Future Needs

Download or read book Polar Icebreaker Roles and U S Future Needs written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-01-08 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The age and condition of the U.S. Coast Guard's polar icebreakers are jeopardizing national security and scientific research in the Arctic and Antarctic, according to an interim report from the National Academies. Because of a shortfall in funding for U.S. polar icebreaking activities, long-term maintenance on these icebreakers has been deferred over the past several years, making the ships inefficient to operate and their technological systems outdated. Congress asked the National Academies to provide a comprehensive assessment of the current and future roles of U.S. Coast Guard polar icebreakers in supporting U.S. operations in the Antarctic and the Arctic, including scenarios for continuing those operations and alternative approaches, the changes in roles and missions of polar icebreakers in the support of all national priorities in the polar regions, and potential changes in the roles of U.S Coast Guard icebreakers in the Arctic that may develop due to environmental change. This brief interim report highlights the most urgent and time-dependent issues, and a final report, expected to be released next summer, will examine the type and number of icebreaking ships that the U.S. requires in the long term and other issues.
