Book The Hysiology of the Ascent of SAP Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Hysiology of the Ascent of SAP Classic Reprint written by Jagadis Chunder Bose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Hysiology of the Ascent of Sap The ascent of sap has been the most elusive problem in Plant-physiology. The obscurity which has surrounded the subject has been in a great measure due to the lack of adequate means of detection and accurate measurement of the rate of ascent, of transpiration, of exudation, and their induced variations. Various types of automatic recorders of great sensitiveness and precision have been devised and are described in the present work, which have been of signal service in the investigations of which an account is here given. The result of these researches is to prove the existence of active pulsating cells throughout the length of the plant, in and from the absorbing root to the transpiring leaf. It is the pumping action of these cells that gives rise to the physiological conduction of sap, even in the absence of root-pressure and transpiration; it also injects liquid into the xylem, setting up an intra - vascular pressure with the consequent mechanical transport of uid. The situation of the active cells has been localised by means of the Electric Probe; the cellular pulsations con cerned in the ascent of sap have been recorded by an automatic method. The invisible changes in the interior of the plant have thus been revealed, and the effect of the changes of the environment determined from the responsive variations in the pulse-record. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transpiration and the Ascent of Sap in Plants In the formation of the theory and in much of the earlier work carried out to test its validity and to illustrate its applicability, Dr. J. Joly and the author worked in collaboration. The work on the cryoscopy of sap was carried out with the help of Mr. W. R. G. Atkins, to whom the author is further indebted for his help in reading the proofs and for his useful criticisms. Prof. R. A. Gregory - the editor of this series of monographs - has also kindly supplied several valuable emendations and suggestions. Book Xylem Structure and the Ascent of Sap

Download or read book Xylem Structure and the Ascent of Sap written by Melvin T. Tyree and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book was the first to provide an integrated description of sap ascension from an anatomical and functional point of view. The second edition opens with the three-dimensional aspects of wood anatomy. The cohesion-tension theory and new evidence are introduced in response to recent controversies over the mechanism of sap ascent in plants. The physiology, anatomy and biophysics of xylem dysfunction are discussed and new insights into hydraulic architecture are reviewed with special emphasis on physiological limits on maximum transpiration and how hydraulic architecture limits gas exchange, carbon gain and growth of plants. The text concludes with a description of xylem failure and pathology. The book highlights fascinating areas of current research with the aim to stimulate more work in the future.

Book Physiology of Woody Plants

Download or read book Physiology of Woody Plants written by Stephen G. Pallardy and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 469 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Woody plants such as trees have a significant economic and climatic influence on global economies and ecologies. This completely revised classic book is an up-to-date synthesis of the intensive research devoted to woody plants published in the second edition, with additional important aspects from the authors' previous book, Growth Control in Woody Plants. Intended primarily as a reference for researchers, the interdisciplinary nature of the book makes it useful to a broad range of scientists and researchers from agroforesters, agronomists, and arborists to plant pathologists and soil scientists. This third edition provides crutial updates to many chapters, including: responses of plants to elevated CO2; the process and regulation of cambial growth; photoinhibition and photoprotection of photosynthesis; nitrogen metabolism and internal recycling, and more. Revised chapters focus on emerging discoveries of the patterns and processes of woody plant physiology. * The only book to provide recommendations for the use of specific management practices and experimental procedures and equipment*Updated coverage of nearly all topics of interest to woody plant physiologists* Extensive revisions of chapters relating to key processes in growth, photosynthesis, and water relations* More than 500 new references * Examples of molecular-level evidence incorporated in discussion of the role of expansion proteins in plant growth; mechanism of ATP production by coupling factor in photosynthesis; the role of cellulose synthase in cell wall construction; structure-function relationships for aquaporin proteins

Book High Altitude Physiology and Medicine

Download or read book High Altitude Physiology and Medicine written by W. Brendel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High altitude physiology and medicine has again become important. The excep tional achievements of mountaineers who have climbed nearly all peaks over 8,000 m without breathing equipment raise the question of maximal adaptation ca pacity of man to low oxygen pressures. More importantly, the increase in tourism in the Andes and the Himalayas brings over 10,000 people to sites at altitudes above 4,000 and 5,000 m each year. At such heights several kinds of high alti tude diseases are likely to occur, and these complications require detailed medical investigations. Medical authorities need to inform both mountaineers and tourists as to how great a physical burden can be taken in the mountain environment without risk to health. Physicians need to know what kind of prophylaxis is to be employed at high altitudes to prevent the development of diseases and what therapeutic measures should be used once high altitude diseases have occurred. Moreover, the physical condition of the indigenous population living at higher altitudes such as the Andes and the Himalayas, who are exposed continuously to the stress of high altitude, requires our attention. We have become familiar with symptoms characteristic of chronic high-altitude disease: under special conditions this popu lation has a tendency to develop pulmonary hypertension, which is associated with pulmonary edema, pulmonary congestion, and right heart failure.
