Book The Huntsman of the South Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Huntsman of the South Classic Reprint written by Alexander Hunter and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-11 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Huntsman of the South IT is the inexorable law of Nature that all liv ing creatures prey upon one another. By beak, talons, and claw the fight was commenced, and it will end only when this world is no more. To say that sporting is a cruel pastime is to ignore the fact that all fin, fur, and feather batten upon one another, and if the rifle or gun did not end their days, they would be killed anyway. I think the greatest gift Nature can bestow upon a child is to endow him with a love of the forest, the field, the stream, and to infect his blood with a longing for field sports. It will make the boy and the man stronger, healthier and hap pier. My sporting days commenced many years ago, on a big plantation bordering the Potomac River. Game was plentiful in those days when the muzzle-loader was king, and it was a woeful day for sportsman and game alike when the breech-loader and the pump-gun were invented. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wild Huntsman: A Legend of the Hartz Hunter was long a blasting tradition to the poor who lived on the skirts of Windsor Forest. In the Ross of outer Scotland and the Hebrides, the simple herdsmen were often terrified by his hoarse-winded horn, the din of the wild race of deer and dogs, and the ghostly hoofs quick beating over the hollow, mist-wrapped hills. Everywhere in Germany the tale was told; from the bleak northern lowlands to the deepest re cesses of the Black Forest in the South, where he was a wandering and undying Jew, who de nied Christ a drink from a horse-trough, and bade him lap the water collected in a hoof print. Download or read book Reminiscences of a Huntsman Classic Reprint written by Grantley F. Berkeley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of a Huntsman He is said to have been an ungraceful rider. He prided himself to the last, says Mr. Charles Kent in the Dictionary of National Biography, upon having learnt pugilism from Byron's instructor, Jackson, and retained until far on in middle life a coarser kind of buckish coxcombry. He delighted in wearing at the same time two or three different-coloured satin under-waist coats, and round his throat three or four gaudy silk neckerchiefs, held together by passing the ends of them through a gold ring. Even when he had come to be an old man, he piqued himself upon having been the last to cling to the flat cocked hat of polite life known early in the century as the chapeau bras. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Seventy Years a Master: A Huntsman's Reminiscences What a charming picture - the Old man, shortly entering upon his ninety-third year, as fond as ever of the pack which has given him so many happy days. Just fancy - eighty-odd years with the bounds, and keen to the last 1 It is difficult to realise that we still have with us a sportsman who saw Mr. C. Barnett, the famous Master Of the Cambridgeshire, find his first cub in the first year Of his long Mastership, namely 1829. Yet Mr. Race is that man, and he still loves to recall the many good runs he saw with Mr. Barnett and his hounds. As well as having seen him find his first fox, he saw him kill his last in his final season, thirty-eight years later. Download or read book On the Yard written by Malcolm Braly and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2012-06-13 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major American novel, and arguably the finest work of literature ever to emerge from a US prison, On the Yard is a book of penetrating psychological realism in which Malcolm Braly paints an unforgettable picture of the complex and frightening world of the penitentiary. At its center are the violently intertwined stories of Chilly Willy, in trouble with the law from his earliest years and now the head of the prison’s flourishing black market in drugs and sex, and of Paul, wracked with guilt for the murder of his wife and desperate for some kind of redemption. At once brutal and tender, clear-eyed and rueful, On the Yard presents the penitentiary not as an exotic location, an exception to everyday reality, but as an ordinary place, one every reader will recognize, American to the core.

Book Hunting and Fishing in the New South

Download or read book Hunting and Fishing in the New South written by Scott E. Giltner and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2008-12-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study re-examines the dynamics of race relations in the post–Civil War South from an altogether fresh perspective: field sports. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, wealthy white men from Southern cities and the industrial North traveled to the hunting and fishing lodges of the old Confederacy—escaping from the office to socialize among like-minded peers. These sportsmen depended on local black guides who knew the land and fishing holes and could ensure a successful outing. For whites, the ability to hunt and fish freely and employ black laborers became a conspicuous display of their wealth and social standing. But hunting and fishing had been a way of life for all Southerners—blacks included—since colonial times. After the war, African Americans used their mastery of these sports to enter into market activities normally denied people of color, thereby becoming more economically independent from their white employers. Whites came to view black participation in hunting and fishing as a serious threat to the South’s labor system. Scott E. Giltner shows how African-American freedom developed in this racially tense environment—how blacks' sense of competence and authority flourished in a Jim Crow setting. Giltner’s thorough research using slave narratives, sportsmen’s recollections, records of fish and game clubs, and sporting periodicals offers a unique perspective on the African-American struggle for independence from the end of the Civil War to the 1920s.
