Book The Human Advantage

Download or read book The Human Advantage written by Jay W. Richards and published by Crown Forum. This book was released on 2018-06-19 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author and economist Jay W. Richards makes the definitive case for how the free market and individual responsibility can save the American Dream in an age of automation and mass disruption. For two and a half centuries, America has been held together by the belief that if you work hard and conduct yourself responsibly in this country, you will be able to prosper and leave a better life for your children. But over the past decade, that idea has come into crisis. A recession, the mass outsourcing of stable jobs, and a coming wave of automation that will replace millions of blue- and white-collar jobs alike have left many people worried that the game is rigged and that our best days are behind us. In this story-driven manifesto on the future of American work, Jay Richards argues that such thinking is counterproductive--making us more fragile, more dependent, and less equipped to succeed in a rapidly changing economy. If we're going to survive, we need a new model for how ordinary people can thrive in this age of mass disruption. Richards pulls back the curtain on what's really happening in our economy, dispatching myths about capitalism, greed, and upward mobility. And he tells the stories of how real individuals have begun to rebuild a culture of virtue, capitalizing on the skills that are most uniquely human: creativity, resilience, and empathy for the needs of others. Destined to take its place alongside classics like Economics in One Lesson, The Human Advantage is the essential book for understanding the future of American work, and how each of us can make this era of staggering change work on our behalf.

Book The Ethics of Eating Animals

Download or read book The Ethics of Eating Animals written by Bob Fischer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intensive animal agriculture wrongs many, many animals. Philosophers have argued, on this basis, that most people in wealthy Western contexts are morally obligated to avoid animal products. This book explains why the author thinks that’s mistaken. He reaches this negative conclusion by contending that the major arguments for veganism fail: they don’t establish the right sort of connection between producing and eating animal-based foods. Moreover, if they didn’t have this problem, then they would have other ones: we wouldn’t be obliged to abstain from all animal products, but to eat strange things instead—e.g., roadkill, insects, and things left in dumpsters. On his view, although we have a collective obligation not to farm animals, there is no specific diet that most individuals ought to have. Nevertheless, he does think that some people are obligated to be vegans, but that’s because they’ve joined a movement, or formed a practical identity, that requires that sacrifice. This book argues that there are good reasons to make such a move, albeit not ones strong enough to show that everyone must do likewise.

Book Evolutionary Intelligence

Download or read book Evolutionary Intelligence written by Rolf W. Frohlich and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2004-04-27 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human nature holds the intelligence of life. It provides a psychology that is much stronger, more effective and more reliable than the psychology society teaches us. This psychology taps into the evolutionary survival experience of our species, which occupied most of human history. It was the period when the species evolved and our ancestor survived as a hunter and gatherer. More than 99% of human history is encoded in the DNA of our genes and lastingly etched into the human psyche. Our natural psychology, the human psyche, is the result of evolutionary adaptation. The psyche provides the genetic capacity for behavioral, mental and spiritual adaptation. It supports the gratification of our needs. And it contains the blueprint of human life. The book is about human nature and human survival. Human nature, that is, the human psyche, has survival value. The book introduces a metapsychology that refers to the Jungian archetypes and the survival capabilities inherent in the psyche. Like all living organisms and forms of life, we possess an innate capacity for survival. By awakening this evolutionary intelligence, we gain access to the primordial power and wisdom of the archetypal psyche. This innate psychology transcends the cultural conditioning that has shaped us all and erects an entirely different reference system making us look at life in a new way. We live in a world that reflects human nature and we are well equipped to survive in it. Beyond that, there is also something in us that resonates with a larger context. Our psychological constitution relates us to the outer realities of nature and cosmos. It is in this sense that we partake in the evolution of life on this planet and in the larger design of a cosmic universe. This primary psyche is shared by all humanity as part of a common biological and psychological history.

Book The American Deer Hunter

Download or read book The American Deer Hunter written by Francis E. Sell and published by Stackpole Books. This book was released on 2018-03-28 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The American Deer Hunter is the result of a great amount of experience in hunting with an extraordinary degree of success. The content represents the determination to set down the hard facts and the effective equipment and means for stalking and shooting the white-tail and his cousins. The book is highly original in its presentation. It is in no sense a rehash of previous discussions or formulae. The author deals at all times with actual problems of locating, maneuvering, and shooting and with the guns employed. The discussions are based on circumstances of reality in the relationships of deer, environment, hunter and gun, not on preconceived or synthetic situations. Here are interesting and important data on deer habits and on speeds and gaits. Here also is an extensive treatment of selection and care of weapons for deer hunting; the killing and dressing of game; and even on clothing for the deer hunter. All told, it has a wealth of material useful to both the veteran hunter and the novice.
