Book excerpt: The Hummingbird Process is a holistic process that anyone can do. But it is particularly effective for people who have any form of mental illness from depression, self-harming, anxiety, low self-esteem, and lack of confidence or are just finding life stressful and are having trouble engaging in their life due to a life-changing experience or trauma. This is a program that is used to still the mind and cut out the mind chatter that can lead to destructive thoughts. It helps you get in touch with your inner self. Working through the process enables you to truly understand yourself using visualization and self-enquiry. You will also use a journal to track and record memories and stories about your life. This will allow a greater understanding of who you are and why you do the things you do. Ultimately, this process will heal past traumas, beliefs, and attitudes that do not serve you today. The process takes the form of a virtual house that has many floors. Each floor has several rooms for you to explore. Each room represents an aspect of yourself. As you enter a room, you meet an aspect of yourself. This presents an opportunity to have a conversation about why you are in this room and what it represents to you. Write in your journal about your experiences in each roomyour findings and how you feel. In time, certain observations will emerge and patterns of behavior can be seen. After working through the rooms on each floor, an opportunity to break the pattern can be taken. Thereafter, you move on to the next floor. The final floor will be the place where you get to see and understand who you truly are. From here, you will have all the tools and skills to live a more fulfilling lifein mind, body, and spirit.

Book excerpt: From the author of the acclaimed debut novel The Curiosity comes an emotionally resonant tale about a woman who must take care of two wounded men – one, her soldier-husband, just home from the war in Iraq; the other, a dying World War II scholar-historian who harbors a long-buried secret. Deborah Birch is a seasoned hospice nurse whose daily work requires courage and compassion. But her skills and experience are tested in new and dramatic ways when her easygoing husband, Michael, returns from his third deployment to Iraq haunted by nightmares, anxiety, and rage. She is determined to help him heal, and to restore the tender, loving marriage they once had. At the same time, Deborah’s primary patient is Barclay Reed, a retired history professor and expert in the Pacific Theater of World War II whose career ended in academic scandal. Alone in the world, the embittered professor is dying. As Barclay begrudgingly comes to trust Deborah, he tells her stories from that long-ago war, which help her find a way to help her husband battle his demons. Told with piercing empathy and heartbreaking realism, The Hummingbird is a masterful story of loving commitment, service to country, and absolution through wisdom and forgiveness.

Book Foundations of Musical Grammar

Download or read book Foundations of Musical Grammar written by Lawrence Michael Zbikowski and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is it that humans are able to organize seemingly random sounds into the captivating sonic structures we call music? In this volume, Lawrence M. Zbikowski argues that humans' unique ability to correlate sounds with dynamic processes provides the basis for the construction of meaningful musical utterances - that is, a foundation for musical grammar. Building on a framework for grammar developed by cognitive linguists over the past three decades and the pathbreaking research set out in his earlier book, Conceptualizing Music (OUP 2002), Zbikowski explains how the ability to draw analogies between widely differing domains allowing humans to connect sequences of musical sounds with emotion processes, physical gestures, and the steps of dance. He shows how these connections underpin an evocative movement from a cantata by J.S. Bach, guide our understanding of gestural choreographies by Fred Astaire and Charlie Chaplin, and frame connections between movement and music in French courtly dance and the Viennese waltz. Through thorough surveys of research in cognitive science and careful analyses of works by composers ranging from Bach, Brahms, and Schubert to Jerome Kern, Zbikowski explores the unique resources for communication offered by music and examines how these differ from those of language. Foundations of Musical Grammar is sure to be an instant - and enticingly controversial - classic within the evolving literature addressing the many complex intersections of music and language. -- from dust jacket.
