Excerpt: ...is possible to avoid it by withdrawing or diverting the toes while still holding the ground with the other foot. If there be no impediment: if good foot-hold for the toes and front part of the foot be found, it will afford a bearing. On this bearing the walker can spring if any sharp object come in contact with the sole of the hinder part of the foot. Moreover, the heel, coming last, is the least sensitive part of the sole. On the other hand, if the heel reach the ground first, it is a poor guide as to the nature of the foothold. Let us assume it to have come on a good surface, but that the point where the tread will fall is occupied by a sharp object, unsuspected. In that case, when the weight of the body falls on it, recovery is impossible: one can't spring backwards on to the heel as one can forwards on to the toes. Let anyone try to walk blind-fold about a room strewed with tin-tacks. It can be done if you feel the ground first with the toes, not otherwise. It is idle to meet this by saying that for walking among tin-tacks it would be better to walk on tiptoe altogether--this was the reply actually made, in print, by a critic.--The question is, what is the best means of walking where sharp objects are unexpected, but liable to be? Nor is it sufficient to say that pointing the toes downwards is an "affected " mode of walking. That is a matter of taste. It is the natural walk of at least some of the highest types of savages. "We are at liberty to prefer seeing the toes first touch the ground, and held down to it by tendons of muscles, which allow the heel to descend smoothly and firmly. We may think that this is better than using the foot as if it were indeed a rocker, or as if it were the plantigrade foot of a bear. Let...

Book Understanding the Human Foot

Download or read book Understanding the Human Foot written by James Earls and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2021-11-02 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An essential resource for bodyworkers, physical therapists, and sports medicine practitioners--a vital guide to understanding the anatomy, form, and mechanics of the human foot. Understanding the Human Foot is a full-color, up-to-date overview of the structure and function of the foot, written for physical therapists and movement practitioners looking to deepen their understanding of holistic anatomy. Readers will gain perspective on the impacts of foot shape; the interdependence of form and function; and the cellular processes that determine how our tissue is designed. Most importantly, author James Earls demonstrates how the foot relates to and interacts with the rest of the body during movement, laying the groundwork for a comprehensive holistic approach to assessing, troubleshooting, and addressing functional and structural foot issues. Starting with big-picture questions--what is a foot, and what is it used for? How does it work, both on its own and as part of a whole?--before zeroing in on the 26 bones, 33 joints, and many muscles that make up the foot, Earls teaches anatomy the way he wishes he'd been taught 30 years ago: with a holistic emphasis on interrelated systems, real-life applications, and approachable, easy-to-understand language. He shares: Full-color illustrations for easy reference and comprehensive understanding An overview of the bones, ligaments, and extrinsic and intrinsic muscles of the foot How your gait impacts the rest of the body--and can cause problems as high up as the neck and shoulders How to assess structural problems of the foot Corrective exercises A footwear guide to choosing the best shoe for your foot type

Book The Sex Life of the Foot and Shoe

Download or read book The Sex Life of the Foot and Shoe written by William A. Rossi and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1977, The Sex Life of the Foot and Shoe examines the realities of foot and shoe eroticism practised by almost all of us, whether consciously or unconsciously. Provocative often witty and always original, the book takes us on a walking tour through history: from Chinese footbinding (completely sexual in intent) and the medieval poulaine (perhaps the most blatantly pornographic shoe ever worn) to the outrageous distortions of the foot gladly suffered by woman over the centuries in the cause of sexual allure. The author explores the obsession with ‘sick’ and ‘tired’ feet and the huge industry that has sprung up to cater to our negativism. He gives a psychosexual guide to us via footwear, grouping men’s and women’s shoes into such categories as sexy, sexless, neuter, bisexual, sensuous, peacock, masculine, eunuch and machismo. This book will be of interest to students of history, gender studies, sexuality studies and fashion.
