Ever tried a walk on the wild side?” “What? Oh, you mean have I ever, um, been with a woman. No” Julie took another sip of the wine to hide her nervousness. _I thought I’d got over this, why is it coming back?_ “Never? Not even at school? Never ‘practise’ kissing with your best friend? Never go to your best friend’s house and compare the changes puberty was making to you both? Never spent the night spooning with a friend at a sleepover? I did all of those and whereas I was gay I’m pretty sure they weren’t” Julie was sure her face was red as she answered. “No, I’ve never done anything like that” _Though I do remember Cynthia at school talking about practising kissing with Emma. And I remember feeling jealous..._ She gulped some more wine to hide her discomfort. _And why am I uncomfortable with this?_ “Well, if you want to see what you missed out on, I’m here.” Kate said with a smile and a seductive pout. Heart pounding, Julie replied “I thought you said I was safe with you”, smiling and laughing nervously. _Did she mean that? Do I *want* her to have meant it?_ “I said that I wouldn’t do anything that you don’t want me to. And I meant it.” She reached over to put her wine glass down, moving closer as she did. “So, what do you want, Julie? Would you like me to kiss you?” _Oh God..._ “I...” _What do I say?_ “I...” Julie couldn’t speak, her voice was paralysed with the thought of where this

Book The Almost Complete Hitchhiker in Time

Download or read book The Almost Complete Hitchhiker in Time written by Shawn M. Tomlinson and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2015-11-07 with total page 684 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hitchhiker in Time columns were the single most popular things ever written by Shawn M. Tomlinson, which honestly doesn't say all that much. All together, they appeared in fewer than 10 newspapers between 1988 and 2001. Well, multiple copies of those newspapers, of course. The highest circulation was approximately 40,000, so not exactly Bob Greene levels. Still, Tomlinson had a following with these columns and to a great extent, they hold up well today. Either that or Tomlinson would like to think so. Many of these columns appeared in chapbooks over the years, but this is the first full collection of them to be in print.

Book Jubilee Hitchhiker

  • Author : William Hjortsberg
  • Publisher : Catapult
  • Release : 2012-04-01
  • ISBN : 1619020459
  • Pages : 1454 pages

Download or read book Jubilee Hitchhiker written by William Hjortsberg and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2012-04-01 with total page 1454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Confident and robust, Jubilee Hitchhiker is an comprehensive biography of late novelist and poet Richard Brautigan, author of Troutfishing in America and A Confederate General from Big Sur, among many others. When Brautigan took his own life in September of 1984 his close friends and network of artists and writers were devastated though not entirely surprised. To many, Brautigan was shrouded in enigma, erratic and unpredictable in his habits and presentation. But his career was formidable, an inspiration to young writers like Hjortsberg trying to get their start. Brautigan's career wove its way through both the Beat–influenced San Francisco Renaissance in the 1950s and the "Flower Power" hippie movement of the 1960s; while he never claimed direct artistic involvement with either period, Jubilee Hitchhiker also delves deeply into the spirited times in which he lived. As Hjortsberg guides us through his search to uncover Brautigan as a man the reader is pulled deeply into the writer's world. Ultimately this is a work that seeks to connect the Brautigan known to his fans with the man who ended his life so abruptly in 1984 while revealing the close ties between his writing and the actual events of his life. Part history, part biography, and part memoir this etches the portrait of a man destroyed by his genius.

Book The Hitchhiker s Patchwork of Photons

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The novel is fiction, a tapestry of family saga with chaos and order. Is it possible to survive a misstep? The characters don't walk away from their purpose or people they care. They live with passion. They create. They stop to listen their surroundings. They hear and see. They breathe in the fresh air. It is organic; a theatrical life-survival homage. Unconditional love no matter what. The characters have the incentive to improve and do better with mindfulness-steps. They hop for a hitchhike of creative Flow. A vivid poignant 'parcour' of colourful wondering of day to day events. Perhaps invisible photons helping out to heal and learn new stitches for a decorative patchwork, a unique human masterpiece. Each character has the will to act with kindness. No bullying. No guns. But life is never perfect. Spontaneously, the characters try to modify their daily steps; a hitch-lift-ride to discover more about why do we live? and what for? This fast pace story is a recipe of flavoured ingredients from the 60s to now; spiced with historical data; homemade gardens adding to the sugary sound of musical hits. Life is mysterious. One must have good reflexes, and guidance from the elders, family, and caring friends to contour multiple happenstance twists that occurs. This is a contemporary metaphorical voyage on Blue Planet Earth. From Montréal, Québec, Ottawa, Toronto, West Coast, and abroad, do the characters appreciate? Do they make a difference? If so, how? This is a learning experience. It is up to the reader to find out. In the meantime, hug a tree with gratitude, and dally with the lightness of being towards a bountiful promise green land-of-no walls.

Book 101 Poems and Philosophies for Geezers and Geezerettes

This book was released on 2013-12 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Or maybe they do! 101 Poems and Philosophies includes poems and mini-essays about growing older. Oh, what fun it is, arthritis, dementia, and enough anxiety to see you to the cemetery and beyond. Book Construal

Download or read book Construal written by Lyn Frazier and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1996 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Construal presents a new theory of sentence processing, one that allows a limited type of underspecification in the syntactic analysis of sentences. It extends what has arguably been the dominant theory of parsing (the garden-path theory developed by Lyn Frazier and colleagues) through the 1980s into new and previously unexplored domains, and greatly advances the potential for insights into how meaning is both made and understood. Frazier and Clifton, both pioneers in parsing theory, present new psycholinguistic theory and experimentation concerning how "nonprimary" phrases are analyzed in sentence comprehension. They define a process of "construal" and show how it accounts for cases in which the parser does not fully determine structure during the course of ordinary comprehension. The idea of construal arises in part through the authors' critical review of the challenges to their established framework for research on structural parsing. While they demonstrate that the principles of parsing theory remain valid for a wide variety of languages and grammatical constructions, they go beyond them to clearly identify those types of constructions built by the process of construal. Frazier and Clifton show that construal follows distinct principles, and they flesh out their hypothesis with previously unexamined evidence and new empirical tests.

Book A Hitchhiker s Triptych

Download or read book A Hitchhiker s Triptych written by John Gardiner and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2022-11-30 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Gardiner worked as a journalist and media advisor for more than 40 years. He has travelled extensively across the world throughout his life. His book A Hitchhiker’s Triptych covers six months of his first journey into England, Wales, Ireland and Scotland during the turbulent days of the early 1970s. It was the time of the Troubles in Ireland. The Arabs also were holding the West to ransom with oil embargoes. John wanders head-on into these and other major world issues during his hitchhiking adventures. His book is a superb exploration of life on the road during the 1970s. How easy it was to hitchhike in those days. Stick out a thumb and land a ride. A Hitchhiker’s Triptych is intriguing. It explores a wanderer’s life during far simpler times. Decades before the internet and instant news feeds. This is a journey pre-digital. A step back in time where adventure is achieved simply by standing beside a highway and sticking out a thumb. Wonders and wisdom found over that next hill.

Book The Frood

  • Author : Jem Roberts
  • Publisher : Random House
  • Release : 2014-09-25
  • ISBN : 1409052354
  • Pages : 482 pages

Download or read book The Frood written by Jem Roberts and published by Random House. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a wise ape once observed, space is big – vastly, hugely, mind-bogglingly so. However, if you look too closely at space, it becomes nothing but lumps of rock and sundry gases. Sometimes it's necessary to take a step back, and let a few billion years go by, before any of the true wonder and scope of the cosmos becomes apparent. Similarly, the late 20th century author, humorist and thinker Douglas Adams was big – vastly, hugely and thoroughly mind-bogglingly so, both in physical terms, and as a writer who has touched millions of readers, firing up millions of cerebellums all over planet Earth, for over 35 years – and for nearly half of that time, he hasn't even been alive. It would be ridiculous to pretend that Douglas Adams's life and work has gone unexamined since his dismayingly early death at 49 but throughout the decade since the last book to tackle the subject, the universes Adams created have continued to develop, to beguile and expand minds, and will undoubtedly do so for generations to come. An all-new approach to the most celebrated creation of Douglas Adams is therefore most welcome, and The Frood tells the story of Adams's explosive but agonizingly constructed fictional universe, from his initial inspirations to the posthumous sequel(s) and adaptations, bringing together a thousand tales of life as part of the British Comedy movements of the late 70s and 80s along the way. With the benefit of hindsight and much time passed, friends and colleagues have been interviewed for a fresh take on the man and his works.
