Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The House of Gordon, Vol. 1 Ballade of the Gay Gordons. In distant days of Border Raid, Ere Scot was Scot, and foe was foe, 'Twas hard to tell the hostile blade, And harder still it was to know For whom to strike the battle blow - The kindly keep, the adverse moat; Yet, even then, in weal or woe The Gordons had the guidirin' o't. They fought and fell in sun and shade; The battle sometimes brought them low; Yet never were their sons afraid To face the risks of overthrow. The slogan rang from hearts aglow With courage 'neath the mailed coat: With "Bydand!" cry and bended bow The Gordons had the guidin' o't. The March was mastered by their aid, And proudly did the king bestow The mighty track of glen and glade Athwart the Grampians' line of snow. And since the days of Long-Ago, Where'er they've stood, where'er they've smote, The stories of their prowess show The Gordons had the guidin' o't. Envoy. Cock of the North! To you we owe The hearts which, at your slogan note, Are fain to prove, by veldt and voe, The Gordons hae the guidin' o't. - J. M. B. Download or read book The Library of George Gordon King Vol 2 of 2 written by Joseph Allan Nolan and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-10 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Library of George Gordon King, Vol. 2 of 2: The Prints The plan of this catalogue was formed for the pur pose of study, and not to extol the worth or to hide the deficiencies of the collection. Difficulties, however, were met in making the division by schools and by centuries. Some engravers, it happens, are claimed by two or more schools; and wrong or insufficient information makes doubtful any decision as to others. The division into centuries is, of course, arbitrary but it was thought bet ter to determine the centuries by the death-dates rather than by the birth-dates. The prints forming the collection are placed loosely in portfolios, which are lettered from A to I or lightly mounted in volumes, which are numbered from r to 68. Of the contents of these portfolios and volumes, a gen eral statement is given in Part I., the Book Catalogue, under the heading Prints. The portfolios are divided into schools and centuries, the volumes are paged, and the prints are continuously numbered from 1 to 5538. It's February 1964 and The Beatles just landed in New York City, where the NYPD, swarms of fans, and a crowd of two hundred journalists await their first American press conference. It begins with the question on everyone's mind: "Are you going to get a haircut in America?" and ends with a reporter tugging Paul McCartney's hair in an attempt to remove his nonexistent wig. This is where The History of Rock & Roll, Volume 2 kicks off. Chronicling the years 1964 through the mid-1970s, this latest volume covers one of the most exciting eras of rock history, which saw a massive outpouring of popular and cutting-edge music. Ward weaves together an unputdownable narrative told through colorful anecdotes and shares the behind-the-scenes stories of the megastars, the trailblazers, DJs, record executives, concert promoters, and producers who were at the forefront of this incredible period in music history. From Bob Dylan to Bill Graham, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Byrds, Aretha Franklin, The Rolling Stones, and more, everyone's favorite musicians of the era make an appearance in this sweeping history that reveals how the different players, sounds, and trends came together to create the music we all know and love today.

Book Grant

Download or read book Grant written by Ron Chernow and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 1106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The #1 New York Times bestseller and New York Times Book Review 10 Best Books of 2017 “Eminently readable but thick with import . . . Grant hits like a Mack truck of knowledge.” —Ta-Nehisi Coates, The Atlantic Pulitzer Prize winner Ron Chernow returns with a sweeping and dramatic portrait of one of our most compelling generals and presidents, Ulysses S. Grant. Ulysses S. Grant's life has typically been misunderstood. All too often he is caricatured as a chronic loser and an inept businessman, or as the triumphant but brutal Union general of the Civil War. But these stereotypes don't come close to capturing him, as Chernow shows in his masterful biography, the first to provide a complete understanding of the general and president whose fortunes rose and fell with dizzying speed and frequency. Before the Civil War, Grant was flailing. His business ventures had ended dismally, and despite distinguished service in the Mexican War he ended up resigning from the army in disgrace amid recurring accusations of drunkenness. But in war, Grant began to realize his remarkable potential, soaring through the ranks of the Union army, prevailing at the battle of Shiloh and in the Vicksburg campaign, and ultimately defeating the legendary Confederate general Robert E. Lee. Along the way, Grant endeared himself to President Lincoln and became his most trusted general and the strategic genius of the war effort. Grant’s military fame translated into a two-term presidency, but one plagued by corruption scandals involving his closest staff members. More important, he sought freedom and justice for black Americans, working to crush the Ku Klux Klan and earning the admiration of Frederick Douglass, who called him “the vigilant, firm, impartial, and wise protector of my race.” After his presidency, he was again brought low by a dashing young swindler on Wall Street, only to resuscitate his image by working with Mark Twain to publish his memoirs, which are recognized as a masterpiece of the genre. With lucidity, breadth, and meticulousness, Chernow finds the threads that bind these disparate stories together, shedding new light on the man whom Walt Whitman described as “nothing heroic... and yet the greatest hero.” Chernow’s probing portrait of Grant's lifelong struggle with alcoholism transforms our understanding of the man at the deepest level. This is America's greatest biographer, bringing movingly to life one of our finest but most underappreciated presidents. The definitive biography, Grant is a grand synthesis of painstaking research and literary brilliance that makes sense of all sides of Grant's life, explaining how this simple Midwesterner could at once be so ordinary and so extraordinary.
