Book Shakespeare s King Lear

Download or read book Shakespeare s King Lear written by S. Nagarajan and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shakespeare’s King Lear is often called his mightiest play. This comprehensive edition by S. Nagarajan (who edited the evergreen Signet edition of Measure for Measure) presents a lifetime of scholarship on Shakespeare and fifteen years of research specifically on Lear. Accessibly written, this edition serves the reader who has access to well-stocked libraries and lively theatres, as well as the student whose resources are more limited. The play-text is a conflation of the Quarto text and the First Folio text, and the notes provide a generous but discreet selection of alternative readings of lines and contexts. In ten erudite essays, Nagarajan provides a thoroughly researched picture of Shakespeare’s sources for the play, his unique use of language, Elizabethan theatre, history and values of the play, analysis of enigmatic scenes, glimpses into its performance history and other subjects, with special attention to Indian dramatic art theory. This edition is the first to bring together both the best scholarship on Lear to date and perspectives from Indian poetics and philosophy. The result is a text that robustly includes, but goes beyond, Anglophone cultures and Euro-American experiences, making it truly representative of Lear’s global stage.

  • Author : Jonathan W. Thurston-Torres

Download or read book Animals and Race written by Jonathan W. Thurston-Torres and published by MSU Press. This book was released on 2023-02-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intersection of race and species has a long and problematic history. Western thinking specifically has demonstrated a societal need to try to conceive of race as a purely biological fact rather than a social construct. This book is an academic-activist challenge to that instinct, prioritizing anti-racism in its observation of the animal–race intersection. Too often, as Bénédicte Boisseron has indicated, this intersection typically appears in the form of animal activists instrumentalizing racial discrimination as a vehicle to approach animal rights. But why does this intersection exist, and, perhaps more importantly, how can we challenge it moving forward? This volume examines those two critical questions, taking an interdisciplinary approach in moving across subjects including art history, film studies, American history, and digital media analysis. Our interpretation of animals has, for centuries, been fundamental in the development of Western race thinking. This collection of essays looks at how this perspective contributes to the construction of racial discrimination, prioritizing ways to read the animal in our culture as a means for working to dismantle this conception.

Book A Most Unsuitable Groom

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beware the reluctant bridegroom... Spencer Becket was only eight when he arrived in Romney Marsh as part of the mysteriously displaced Becket family. The son of a seaman and a mother who’d died in childbirth, he grew up longing to be a soldier. His adoptive father reluctantly purchased him a commission, and Spence was off to fight in America, chockfull of passion and ideals. He returned home older, perhaps wiser, but also with one small patch of his memory inconveniently missing. Beware the compromised bride... Mariah Rutledge is the daughter of a British officer killed during a losing battle, and she joins other women and children forced to flee into the swampy forest to avoid capture. For long weeks, she helps care for one of the few wounded soldiers that managed to reach safety. She calms him when he cries out in delirium, presses her body close to his, to warm him as he shivers in the damp chilly nights. He becomes her reason to stay alive, alone, in the wilderness. It is highly possible for a woman in those circumstances to make an emotional mistake. Beware the flames... At Becket Hall, alternately battling and loving each other, Spencer and Mariah unexpectedly discover what appears to be a plot to restore the recently vanquished Napoleon to power in a most unusual way. A deadly way. Bound by the secrets that are all that keep the Beckets safe, Spencer and Mariah must battle the world and their own devils in order to prevent a tragedy ... but will the price for this victory be their very lives?
