Book The Horticulturist s Hand Book Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Horticulturist s Hand Book Classic Reprint written by B. R. Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horticulturist's Hand Book By means of this little book the Horticultural Commissioner of Los Angeles County and his staff send greeting to everyone interested in growing plants and trees into whose hands the book may fall, and more especially the careful painstaking fruit growers who have figured so largely in making this and adjoining counties the attractive abiding places which are drawing toward them the appreciative people from all lands. Our office is in business for the purpose of assisting the tree and plant grower in every way possible, not only to get the best results for the present time, but to keep his, and his neighbors' trees in such condition that the future results will be, at least, equally gratifying, and if possible to better the conditions year by year. In this work we have endeavored to meet the need for a collection of useful information along the line of our work, which can be placed in our growers' hands, and which will, in condensed form, give information helpful in almost any problem likely to come to him in his ordinary experience. We do not intend, in any respect, to compete with the very excellent literature issued from our State Agricultural Experiment Station, but to condense and combine the information, in most cases obtained from these bulletins, for more convenient reference in any emergency. We are greatly indebted to this branch of the College of Agriculture, not only for the able treatises on the various insect and plant matters, from which we have obtained much of the data for this work, but also for copies of their illustrations which they have so kindly provided for us; and for assistance in the same way, our State Horticultural Commissioner's office is entitled to our earnest expressions of appreciation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horticulturist's Rule-Book: A Compendium of Useful Information for Fruit-Growers, Truck-Gardeners, Florists, and Others The first edition of this manual was published late in 1889, and the second early in 1892, both by the Rural Publishing Company. When the first edition was compiled, the modern or current methods of dealing with insect and fungous pests upon large and commercial plantations were in their first experi mental stage. The volume, therefore, recorded the inexact knowledge of the time. It is only within the last two years that the methods of meeting these troubles have come to be generally accepted by horti culturists, and that experimenters have felt that they could give confident advice respecting the many mix tures, appliances, and operations which have been recommended in all quarters. It is time, therefore, that a third and complete edition of this handbook should be issued, to record and advise those practices which have been approved by experiment and experi ence. The contents of the volume have been gleaned from many sources, and whilst the compiler cannot. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Horticultural Exhibitors Handbook

Download or read book The Horticultural Exhibitors Handbook written by William Williamson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-16 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Horticultural Exhibitors' Handbook: A Treatise on Cultivating, Exhibiting, and Judging Plants, Flowers, Fruits, and Vegetables Ix introducing the reader to the contents of this Handbook, we consider it necessary to give a few general remarks on exhibitions; to point out some of the benefits they confer on those who participate in them, and show the effect their agency has on increasing the value of produce. Exhibitions, whether of Science, Art, or Industry, are usually inaugurated with the view of promoting one or more of such desirable objects as the education of the public mind, the gratification of the senses, or the encouragement of Science, Art, or Commerce. That the desired results have been attained in a marked degree in Horticulture is clearly apparent to all observers. When We notice the large and increasing number of shows held throughout the country, nearly every parish and village participating in the annual display of garden pro duce, and see the interest taken in their success by all classes of the people, we are led to conclude that flower-shows must be doing a vast amount of good, directly and indirectly, in this country. Whatever tends to increase the productiveness of the soil - whether it be the proper application of labour, or the acquirement of a sound knowledge of the wants of plants, and the best modes of applying the elements provided by Nature and Science, to meet the varying demands of plant life - is assisting in a material degree to furnish the means which so largely contribute to the comfort and happiness of the people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gardener's Monthly and Horticulturist, 1880, Vol. 22: Devoted to Horticulture, Arboriculture and Rural Affairs If properly shown to the managers, surely every cemetery company would see that it was to its interest to have a skilled gardener. One of this class would require no higher wages in many cases, than an ignoramus, - and even in larger enterprises the gardener and the engineer would both work together for each others' bene fit. Some people talk of politics as the reason why unskilful men are in charge of park gardens and other public positions; please let me ask how many skilled gardeners are there in the Philadelphia cemeteries, where there is no poli tics to interfere in the matter? There are a very few intelligent and worthy exceptions, but the majority are no better than those who get places in public work and under political ia fluence. There are good politicians and there are corrupt ones; there are good nurserymen, and nurserymen who are governed by avaricious motives, who would crowd in stock good bad and indifferent, and men to suit, if it served their avaricious purposes; and one kind of manage ment is no worse than the other. What we want is honest, intelligent manage ment in public parks and city work. We want men who will not bow the knee to Baal. Book Onward and Upward in the Garden

Download or read book Onward and Upward in the Garden written by Katharine S. White and published by New York Review of Books. This book was released on 2015-03-17 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1925 Harold Ross hired Katharine Sergeant Angell as a manuscript reader for The New Yorker. Within months she became the magazine’s first fiction editor, discovering and championing the work of Vladimir Nabokov, John Updike, James Thurber, Marianne Moore, and her husband-to-be, E. B. White, among others. After years of cultivating fiction, White set her sights on a new genre: garden writing. On March 1, 1958, The New Yorker ran a column entitled “Onward and Upward in the Garden,” a critical review of garden catalogs, in which White extolled the writings of “seedmen and nurserymen,” those unsung authors who produced her “favorite reading matter.” Thirteen more columns followed, exploring the history and literature of gardens, flower arranging, herbalists, and developments in gardening. Two years after her death in 1977, E. B. White collected and published the series, with a fond introduction. The result is this sharp-eyed appreciation of the green world of growing things, of the aesthetic pleasures of gardens and garden writing, and of the dreams that gardens inspire.

Download or read book Maverick Gardeners written by Felder Rushing and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2021-03-17 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Be forewarned that this book honors people like the woman in my hometown who paints the numbers of her favorite NASCAR drivers on her elephant ears, and a Tokyo gardener with over a hundred bonsai plants.” So says renowned garden journalist Felder Rushing in his new book Maverick Gardeners: Dr. Dirt and Other Determined Independent Gardeners. In this book, Felder delves deeply into the psychology of what motivates and sustains the Keepers of the Garden Flame. For thousands of years, a loosely connected web of unique, nontraditional gardeners has bonded people across race, culture, language, and other social conventions through sharing unique plants and stories. Found in nearly every neighborhood worldwide, these “determined independent gardeners” (DIGrs) are typically nonjoiners who garden simply and exuberantly, eschewing customary horticultural standards in their amateur pursuits of personal bliss. Included in Maverick Gardeners are classic “passalong plant” lists, a dollop of how-to, numerous color photographs, and thought-provoking essays on quintessential tools, sharing with others, getting away with wildflowers in suburbia, and organizing a plant swap. The centerpiece of this unique gardening journey is the no-holds-barred story of a ten-year cross-cultural collaboration between the horticulturist author and a flamboyant rebellious gardener who called himself Dirt. Through swapping plants and garden lore—and rubbing shoulders with fellow DIGrs—they unraveled their shared humanity. From the practical to the inspiring, Maverick Gardeners is the perfect book for those nonconformist souls who see no sense in trying to fit in and follow the footpaths of others.
