Book excerpt: Although lowland Britain in 300 CE had been as Roman as any province in the empire, in the generations on either side of 400, urban life, the money economy, and the functioning state collapsed. Many of the most quotidian and fundamental elements of Roman-style material culture ceased to be manufactured. Skills related to iron and copper smelting, wooden board and plank making, stone quarrying, commercial butchery, horticulture, and tanning largely disappeared, as did the knowledge standing behind the production of wheel-thrown, kiln-fired pottery and building in stone. No other period in Britain's prehistory or history witnessed the loss of so many classes of once-common skills and objects. While the reasons for this breakdown remain unclear, it is indisputable the collapse was foundational in the making of a new world we characterize as early medieval. The standard explanation for the emergence of the new-style material culture found in lowland Britain by the last quarter of the fifth century is that foreign objects were brought in by "Anglo-Saxon" settlers. Marshalling a wealth of archaeological evidence, Robin Fleming argues instead that not only Continental immigrants, but also the people whose ancestors had long lived in Britain built this new material world together from the ashes of the old, forging an identity that their descendants would eventually come to think of as English. As with most identities, she cautions, this was one rooted in neither birth nor blood, but historically constructed, and advanced and maintained over the generations by the shared material culture and practices that developed during and after Rome's withdrawal from Britain.

Book excerpt: Excavations have uncovered important new evidence of the second century AD Roman pottery industry, with up to eight kilns and a probable potters' workshop recorded on the west side of a major tributary of the Walbrook stream. Two distinct phases of production can be seen, and a stock of unused Samian ware from a pit suggests that pottery may have been sold in a shop attached to the production centre. The pottery industry went into decline in the latter half of the second century, though scattered structures, pitting and dumping were associated with the site in the third and fourth centuries. Research shows that the Roman kilns were producing Verulamium region white ware, linking them to the Verulamium industry, one of the most important regional producers of highly Romanised wares and specialist products such as mortaria.

Book excerpt: This study focuses on the evidence for internal and external cultural influences in north-eastern Greece, examined through ceramic assemblages of the Roman period found near Amphipolis, Philippi, Kepia, Abdera and Thasos. The typology is based on analysis of the stratigraphy where the pottery was found, and on non-ceramic material, such as coins, inscriptions and architectural members, and the chronology is supported by identifiable imported pottery found elsewhere. The fine pottery is arranged according to type: Terra Sigillata wares, Red Slip wares and other minor groups such as Macedonia Grey and Glazed pottery. The coarse wares are classified, arranged according to their fabric, shape, and function. Along with the catalogue is a discussion of the ceramic types, their quantity and chronology. Finally, through the results of this study, the wider area of north-eastern Macedonia and Thrace is re-examined with attention to cultural influences during the Roman period.

Book excerpt: Excavation of a site on river gravels in the Cam/Granta valley, by Archaeological Solutions Ltd, took place in advance of gravel extraction and construction of a reservoir. The excavation revealed five phases of archaeological activity, beginning in the Neolithic period with evidence for episodic or seasonal occupation and burial. After a gap of several centuries, there were three phases of Middle Iron Age to early Roman activity representing the continuous development of the same system of enclosures focussed on a central trackway. Domestic occupation was also evident in the form of partial ring gullies. During the Conquest period there was probably a landing site for boats operating on the former river channel evident at the site. Economic activity during these phases represents a mixed, surplus-generating economy and it is possible that river traffic played an important role in the trade of the agricultural surplus. Limited finds of later Roman artefacts indicate a continued Romano-British presence in the vicinity. The final phase of occupationis a small rural Anglo-Saxon settlement comprising seven sunken-featured buildings and associated pits. Environmental and soil micromorphological analysis from this phase has provided important information about the internal arrangement of SFBs and the processes associated with development of their fills.
