Left to fill his father's shoes with his younger siblings, eighteen-year-old Henry convinces his mother to book a family vacation at a remote cabin. He quickly realizes they were in a mysterious land when he and his ten-year-old brother Moris find two strange magic horns and are thrown into a far-away universe where wizards are fighting and magic rules. They just want to get home again, but someone in the wizard world wants to use the horns' power for dark magic and will stop at nothing to get them. In a strange world where wizards fight each other and are not what they seem, who can the brothers trust? More importantly, how will they ever get home alive? Book The Humbugs of the World Hoaxes Deceits and Con Artists

Download or read book The Humbugs of the World Hoaxes Deceits and Con Artists written by P. T. Barnum and published by e-artnow. This book was released on 2019-12-18 with total page 315 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Humbugs of the World is a book about hoaxes by famous American businessman P. T. Barnum. Barnum tells tales of some of the world's greatest deceits, cheats, cons, and delusions, all of which go under the definition of "humbug". He takes the reader on a tour of flakes through history, describing the ways in which even the brightest fell for the conmen and hucksters of their times. The book also shows just how little changes through the centuries, and how many of the descriptions of cons, swindles and quacks are as relevant today as in Barnum's time.

Book Celtic Art in Europe

Download or read book Celtic Art in Europe written by Christopher Gosden and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2014-08-29 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ancient Celtic world evokes debate, discussion, romanticism and mythicism. On the one hand it represents a specialist area of archaeological interest, on the other, it has a wide general appeal. The Celtic world is accessible through archaeology, history, linguistics and art history. Of these disciplines, art history offers the most direct message to a wider audience. This volume of 37 papers brings together a truly international group of pre-eminent specialists in the field of Celtic art and Celtic studies. It is a benchmark volume the like of which has not been seen since the publication of Paul JacobsthalÕs Early Celtic Art in 1944. The papers chart the history of attempts to understand Celtic art and argue for novel approaches in discussions spanning the whole of Continental Europe and the British Isles. This new body of international scholarship will give the reader a sense of the richness of the material and current debates. Artefacts of rich form and decoration, which we might call art, provide a most sensitive set of indicators of key areas of past societies, their power, politics and transformations. With its broad geographical scope, this volume offers a timely opportunity to re-assess contacts, context, transmission and meaning in Celtic art for understanding the development of European cultures, identities and economies in pre- and proto-history.

Book Email Hoaxes

Download or read book Email Hoaxes written by Theresa Heyd and published by John Benjamins Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How genres emerge and evolve on the Internet has become one of the central questions in studies of computer-mediated communication (CMC). This book addresses the issue of genrefication by giving an in-depth analysis of email hoaxes as a candidate for digital genre status. Email hoaxes are deceptive messages that spread in digital social networks; they are a fascinating object for discourse linguistics as they exemplify a major pragmatic tendency in CMC, namely deceptivity and a lowering of sincerity standards. This study examines formal and functional aspects of email hoaxes and provides ample evidence both from a systematized corpus and in situ data collected online. Besides a structural and microlinguistic analysis, it identifies key issues such as pragmatic duality, narrativity and textual variation and change in email hoaxes. In conclusion, a digital genre model is outlined that bridges both the old/new and the formal/functional gaps and may be applied to many other digital genre ecologies.
