Book excerpt: Mischievous, roguish, or kind spirits of nature represented by handmade children's dolls, known as kachinas, are explored in this colorful volume in the context of the Hopi and Zuñi Native American cultures of New Mexico and Arizona. The study covers their origins, the religious practices surrounding them, their creator's carving styles, restoration, ornamentation, and a chapter on the world's oldest known kachina. Illustrating the Western culture's fascination with the strong suggestive power of these figurines, this investigation also delves into their form within the context of ritual celebrations, during which they are embodied by masked and costumed dancers. This edition is written in both English and French.

Book Carving Self identity

Download or read book Carving Self identity written by Shanna Dunlop and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation examines self-identity as expressed through contemporary Hopi katsina doll carving, an enduring Pueblo tradition and innovative art form. Although katsina dolls are produced by all Pueblo groups, only the Hopi, and to a much lesser extent the Zuni, produce figures for commercial sale. Consequently, this research focuses specifically on contemporary commercial Hopi katsina doll carvings. Within this dissertation, contemporary Hopi carving is considered as a highly expressive vehicle of representation in which carvers act as creative agents of cultural ideology. Following recent transcultured arts models, I argue for a linkage between the art of katsina doll carving, both process and product, and Hopi self-identity, asserting that new trends in carving articulate contemporary concerns regarding cultural continuity, survival, and self-determination in a modern world. In addition to exploring this thesis, my case study of commercial Hopi katsina doll carving also approaches several broader theoretical themes and pertinent issues, including discussions of the processes of transcultural exchange and commodification embodied in acculturated art; the social agency of art consumers in the Western market; and, notions of authenticity and the social production of value associated with art objects.

At a former boy’s school in the remote desert of New Mexico, the world’s greatest scientists have gathered to work on the “Gadget,” an invention so dangerous and classified they cannot even call it by its real name. They work hard, surrounded by top security and sworn to secrecy, until finally they take their creation far out into the desert to test it, and afterward the world will never be the same.

Book Kachinas Spirit Beings of the Hopi

Download or read book Kachinas Spirit Beings of the Hopi written by Neil David and published by . This book was released on 2007-01-16 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Hopi Indians have had Kachinas in their religion for over one thousand years. Over the years many works have been published about the Kachinas. Most of these have discussed them from the white man's interpretation of what the Hopi have told him. This book gives readers the perspective of the Hopis. The seventy-nine Kachinas depicted in this book were painted by Neil David, Sr., a Hopi-Tewa from First Mesa, in the village of Hano, Arizona. The paintings show both the front and back of each Kachina; that is the entire costume of the Kachina. The descriptions of the Kachinas have come from the mouths of various Hopi. They discuss differences in the Kachinas as they appear on each of the three Southwest mesas where the Hopi make their home. The Kachinas which appear in this book are, in general, rare and unusual Kachinas and will enlighten those who wish to learn about and appreciate theKachinas, Spirit Beings of the Hopi.
