Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warriors: Pu` Ali Koa explores the history of how the Hawaiians established their culture and lifestyle while also chronicling historical events of the twentieth century. While researching the history of Hawaii, author Lincoln Yamashita realized that the role of the warrior in Hawaiian history had not been properly documented. To provide a complete and accurate portrait of the warrior, he determined that it was essential to document the role of Warrior Spirit, the legacy of Hawaiian culture, and the history of the Hawaiian nation. Many of the stories of the Hawaiian warriors have been passed down from generation to generation through oral storytelling. Yamashita has gathered the historical stories of the great warriors into this single volume. Warriors: Pu` Ali Koa documents a history that is vital to the cultural fabric of the forty-ninth state. For example, the legacy of the Hawaii Army National Guard began with the first Polynesians who originated in Southeast Asia. The “Ancient Ones” traveled over 2,300 miles from their homeland northward to the islands of Hawai`i. There they established a culture and language that are unique to these islands. These early warriors, and those who followed them, have made Hawai`i what it is today: beautiful, exotic, and true to their native culture and homeland.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about passion, advocacy, and the willingness of parents to "go against the grain." It’s about Hawai‘i professionals choosing public education for their children in a state that adheres to a commonly held belief that "public schools are failing and private schools are succeeding." University of Hawai‘i education professor Ann Bayer interviewed fifty-one parents, including five who chose private schools. Physicians, professors, attorneys, military officers, teachers, legislators, business executives and entrepreneurs, bankers, and administrators of both genders and from a wide range of ethnic backgrounds were among those interviewed. Bayer begins by asking parents why they chose to send their children to public schools. She also asks them to describe the reaction of families, friends, and colleagues to their decision and their children’s school experiences—both positive and negative. From these conversations the concept of what constitutes a "good public school" emerges as well as the opportunities provided by such schools. Several parents remark that their children have gone on to attend the same colleges and universities as private school graduates. Other chapters examine more closely the prevalent belief in the superiority of Hawai‘i’s private schools and its impact on students, parents, and teachers. Bayer argues that it is important to understand this belief system and how both newcomers and longtime residents are exposed to it given its influence on parental decisions about schooling. Finally, she returns to interviews with parents for suggestions on how to improve public education in Hawai‘i and to address the question "Why should we care about the public school system?" Responses spark frank discussions on the broader implications for the civic and economic health of a community fragmented by two-tiered schooling. Candid and insightful, Going Against the Grain provides a much-needed look at education in Hawai‘i. It will be essential reading for parents, teachers, administrators, legislators, policy makers, and others interested in promoting and supporting public education and understanding its role in a democracy.

Book The People s Race Inc

Download or read book The People s Race Inc written by Michael S. K. N. Tsai and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2016-11-30 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Honolulu Marathon debuted in 1973 as the shared vision of a maverick cardiologist bent on proving the benefit of long-distance running for cardiac patients and an impetuous mayor eager to prove Honolulu the equal of the top cities in the country. Over a span of forty-plus years, the race matured into one of the largest marathons in the world, a $100 million economic engine for its home state, and a launch pad for some of the most dominant long-distance runners in modern history. From its modest start as a community event for local amateurs, the race now regularly attracts 30,000 entrants—more than half from Japan—and boasts elite fields led by Kenyan and Ethiopian professional runners, each hoping to earn a share of a $150,000 prize purse. The People’s Race Inc. captures the personalities, politics, and power plays behind the burgeoning growth of the Honolulu Marathon and provides a unique lens for understanding the complex history of the sport itself. Drawn from revealing interviews with those closest to the event, as well as exhaustive research, journalist Michael Tsai presents an insider’s account of how organizers forged lucrative partnerships with foreign investors, helped initiate the age of African dominance of the marathon, and weathered some of the most bizarre challenges imaginable. The book also exposes the ways in which the marathon's expansive growth mirrored the explosive, at times bewildering, development of post-statehood Hawai‘i.

Book Newspaper Competition in the Millennium

Download or read book Newspaper Competition in the Millennium written by Janet A. Bridges and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technology in the 21st century has redesigned most editorial jobs and extended the potential reach of any publication, no matter how small . In effect, not only the individual business models but also the overall industry competitive model has changed. No longer confined to serving a physically defined environment, individual newspapers can set their own goals, both for news distribution and for advertising reach, without concern for physical restrictions. And the continual sales of newspaper properties result in mergers, increased clustering and other types of group alliances. The newspaper industry is also affected competitively by employee recruitment and retention, the non-daily market, other news-related media and non-news carriers of advertising. The industry-related technology has in effect exploded, reaching every news medium in some way. Within the framework of the exploding technological environment, the country's economy and changing demographics have created increased challenges for an industry so dependent on advertising revenue and reader reach. This volume explores the competitive issues as they relate to the industry at this time.

Book Law and Social Movements

Book excerpt: The work of both socio-legal scholars and specialists working in social movements research continues to contribute to our understanding of how law relates to and informs the politics of social movements. In the 1990s, an important line of new research, most of it initiated by those working in the law and society tradition, began to bridge the gaps between these two areas of scholarship. This work includes new approaches to grouplegal mobilization politics; analysis of the judicial impact on social reform struggles; studies of individual legal mobilization in civil disputing and an almost entirely new area of research incause lawyering. It brings together the best of this research introduced by a detailed essay by the editor.
