Reformer, humanist, theologian, philosopher, ecumenist, and teacher of pastors—Melanchthon had a profound effect on the sweep of Western church history. Book Converts in the Dead Sea Scrolls

Download or read book Converts in the Dead Sea Scrolls written by Carmen Palmer and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-09-11 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Converts in the Dead Sea Scrolls examines the meaning of the term gēr in the Dead Sea Scrolls. While often interpreted as a resident alien, this study of the term as it is employed within scriptural rewriting in the Dead Sea Scrolls concludes that the gēr is a Gentile convert to Judaism. Contrasting the gēr in the Dead Sea Scrolls against scriptural predecessors, Carmen Palmer finds that a conversion is possible by means of mutable ethnicity. Furthermore, mutable features of ethnicity in the sectarian movement affiliated with the Dead Sea Scrolls include shared kinship, connection to land, and common culture in the practice of circumcision. The sectarian movement is not as closed toward Gentiles as has been commonly considered.

Book Bassam and the Seven Secret Scrolls

Download or read book Bassam and the Seven Secret Scrolls written by Paul B. Skousen and published by Izzard Ink. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What if you had the seven most powerful ideas in the world? For a thousand years rumors spread among the desert peoples that mysterious scrolls containing fantastic secrets had fashioned the Abdali-ud-din into the richest, most powerful trading dynasty in the world. Men would kill for such knowledge. Indeed, they had killed. And then suddenly, the scrolls simply disappeared. This is the story of the last holder of the scrolls, an old chief named Zafir. Worried that his life was nearly spent, Zafir chose young Bassam to be his heir to the scrolls. Was Bassam ready? To prove the young man Zafir took him on a long caravan trek with the intent of teaching him the scrolls. Partway into the trip came a deadly surprise. Things changed. The hidden messages of the scrolls are timeless. The same secrets that gave such riches to the dynasties of old are just as potent today. Learn these cryptic mysteries that Zafir passed to Bassam, and Bassam to his beloved Rasha, and be delightfully surprised how the Seven Secret Scrolls may guide all who possess them on a pleasant journey toward peace and prosperity. Reviews Paul Skousen shows us he has the gifts of descriptive metaphors and modifiers of all kinds. He makes Bassam and the Seven Secret Scrolls so interesting, so down to earth, that a book one may never have considered reading becomes one which changes one’s soul. —Michael J. Thompson—AML This is a beautifully written story given to us as if it was a tale only the most esteemed sages, descendants of eons past, have deemed us worthy enough to pass it on to. Every word commands our attention as not a single one is to be missed or we may lose the meaning of the entire book. The excerpt has an ancient feel to it that leads me to imagine reading it by oil lamp in one of the caves described in the story. A mystery almost as vexing if not more than the one the author has written. I felt the excerpt to be one with almost magical powers. —ABNA Manuscript Excerpt Review

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Want to know the truth about Bible prophecy? Want to know and understand the prophecies of Jesus? Tired of hearing Bible prophecy predictions that never come true? This book will provide you with the real truth about Bible prophecy, including the following: · Old Testament prophecies of Isaiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and more. · New Testament prophecies of Jesus and the book of Revelation. · How the Jewish people and followers of Jesus understood the prophecies. · Understand Jewish culture, language, customs, and history. · Understand the true meaning of words or phrases in that time. · Understand the true meaning of the prophecies that were written. This book will provide the true meaning of all the Bible Prophecies! We must be able to understand history through the lens of the times in which they were written, not just how they are relevant in today’s news. It is vastly important that we understand Jewish culture, language, customs, and history, as well as the meaning of words and phrases in that time so we can understand the true meaning of the prophecies that were written. Without this understanding we are reading terms outside of their true meaning and can become confused on what the words of scripture are trying to reveal. We must recognize the use of symbolism is very prevalent in prophecy, and we should not interpret symbolism too literally or physically. Symbolism is widely used in both the Old and the New Testaments. We cannot allow ourselves to interpret symbolism as only a physical manifestation, if we do, we can twist the scriptures into unrealistic physical renderings that completely distort the true meaning of the writing, and we lose the intended meaning of the prophecy. “COMING WITH THE CLOUDS, A JOURNEY THROUGH PROPHECY,” explores the scriptures seeking the true meaning of Bible prophecy. All prophecy centers around Jesus, His kingdom, and His rule. The study of all prophecy must be Christ centered. As you read this book, you will gain true insight and understanding. Studying Bible prophecy is one of the most encouraging and faith-building adventures we can take. Bible prophecy gives us hope and keeps us anticipating the Lord’s return. I invite you to join me in this journey through Bible prophecy. Together we will come away with a clear understanding of what Bible prophecy is all about. We will come away with a positive view of the end-times and with a greater hope for our future. When discussing His second coming, Jesus himself said no one knows the time, only the Father knows. It is not up to us to discover the time. It is up to us to be ready! If you really want to know the truth about Bible prophecy, read my book today!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barbara Wood's 1978 debut novel is now back in print in a new edition from Turner Publishing. When the first of the Magdalene Scrolls arrives, Professor Ben Messer is puzzled, intrigued, excited. What scholar of ancient languages wouldn’t be, when he held in his hands something even more astonishing than the Dead Sea Scrolls—a scroll just discovered to contain the life story and last confession of a man who had lived in Jerusalem just after the death of Christ. By the time the second scroll arrives, Ben’s interest has begun to be more than professional. For it seems that David, the writer of the ancient scrolls, is in many ways very much like Ben—and he seems to be speaking directly to Ben, across nearly 2,000 years of history. Before long, the terrifying transformation has begun, and there can be no turning back. What do the words of a Jew who lived 2,000 years ago have to do with today, and with Ben Messer, a man who had forsaken his Jewish identity years ago—or thought he had. And why does David’s life suddenly seem so much more real—and powerful—than Ben’s own? Why does Ben suddenly shut himself off from the beautiful woman he intends to marry and become involved with Judy Golden, a very different kind of woman? And what will happen if Ben surrenders completely to the power of the scrolls? Before long, the terrifying transformation has begun, and there can be no turning back . . .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rejected by God or called to an uncommon path? The eleven apostles cast lots to determine whom the Holy Spirit would pick to replace Judas Iscariot; he must be someone who had been with Jesus the whole time. That left either Joseph bar Sabbas, called Justus, or Matthias. The stones were cast, and the lot fell to Matthias. Even so, Justus wouldn't be denied his dream. He had mingled among the disciples for more than three years. He had been close to Jesus, held private conversations with him, and had laughed with him. He'd slept around the same campfires, visited the same homes, and eaten at the same tables. Now, Justus would chart a new path. He would reveal everything he knew about his Lord from the viewpoint of a privileged witness. Justus began to write. What was it like to be near Jesus in everyday situations or to see him in action in his greatest moments? Did Jesus have a childhood best friend? How did he relate to his fish-breathed disciples? What did he feel when the crowd cried out for his death? Justus logged all of this in a series of scrolls and began a journey to house the treasure at the great library in Alexandria, Egypt. Perhaps, someday they would be seen.

Book Wisdom and Apocalypticism in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in the Biblical Tradition

Download or read book Wisdom and Apocalypticism in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in the Biblical Tradition written by Florentino García Martínez and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2003 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume contains the papers read at the 51st Colloquium Biblicum Lovaniense (July 31 - August 2, 2002) dedicated to the study of the theme of Wisdom and Apocalypticism in the Dead Sea Scrolls and in the biblical tradition in general. The "Main papers" and some of the "Offered papers" have been thematically grouped in four parts. Part I comprises four articles dealing with the relationship between wisdom and apocalypticism in the Scrolls compared to the biblical tradition. Part II includes five papers which focus on specific wisdom compositions from Qumran, such as 1Q/4QMysteries, 4QInstruction, 4QTime of Righteousness, or the "Tractate of the Two Spirits" from the Rule of the Community. The nine contributions of Part III analyse different aspects of biblical Wisdom compositions (in Qohelet, Sirach, and the Wisdom of Solomon) or of apocalyptic writings (in 1 Enoch and 4 Ezra) in the light of the Qumran Wisdom texts. Part IV groups six studies on several aspects of the Wisdom compositions from Qumran (messianic ideas, ecstatic worship, the beatitudes, or the fate of the righteous) which are directly relevant for the study of the New Testament. The articles are written in English (14), French (6), and German (4). Among the contributors are specialists of the Dead Sea Scrolls (Jean Duhaime, Torleif Elgvin, Armin Lange, Hermann Lichtenberger, Emile Puech, Eibert Tigchelaar) and of Early Judaism (e.g., John J. Collins, Daniel Harrington, Michael Knibb), as well as Old Testament scholars (e.g., Hainz-Josef Fabry, Maurice Gilbert, Klaus Koch).
