We have many valuable drugs that are little known in practice, many physicians using them and gaining fine results, do not enlighten their brethren through the mediumship of the medical press. It is to those particularly that we appeal. Our materia medica is volu minous, it is true, but it is also extremely valuable. In our text-books we are told that certain diseases, pneumonia, typhoid fever, etc., run a certain course, in a definite period of time, has so manv stages. Yet, by proper treatment, the disease can be aborted at any of its stages. This surely is another admission of the prophylactic treatment. If the entire disease was not prevented, part of it can be, and this is prophylaxis all the same. Reason confirms the possibility of preventing diseases by the administration of medicines. Just as a chemical or a gas, that will destroy a flower when in bloom, will destroy that same flower when still concealed in its bud even so a medicine capable of killing, making disappear, in other words, caring a certain set of symptoms, or certain conditions which we call dis ease, will surely kill, that is, cure their symptoms when they exist in the system, but have not appeared outside. These, however, are unequivocal and significant. They teach very evidently that toxic doses do not bring out the finer features of the physiological action of the drug, and they demonstrate, with equal clearness, that the result ing symptoms depend upon the size of the dose. The rule, with the salts of Barium, seems to be paralysis of the voluntarv muscles from large doses and clonic spasms from small. Boehm says that in cold-blooded animals the paralysis is preceded by a peculiar state of rudimentary, clonic spasms this order has not been observed in the human being.
