Book The Home of the Indo Europeans Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Home of the Indo Europeans Classic Reprint written by Harold H. Bender and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Home of the Indo-Europeans Far-reaching results have followed the dis covery, a century or more ago, of the relation ship of most of the languages of Europe with one another and with those of India and Persia. The study of these relationships developed into the independently influential science of com parative philology. It shared with Darwinian evolution the responsibility for the vast expan sion, both culturally and historically, of the 19th century horizon of human thought. It brought to the modern world new conceptions of the past and a new consciousness of nationalism and racial fraternities that was not without politi cal importance in the recent war and in the re adjustments' that followed it. It was early evi dent that the speakers oi these languages of Europe and Asia were the heirs of a common culture and that their several dialects were the descendants of a prehistoric tongue, the so called indo-european, which was not identical with that of the Hebrews, the Babylonians, the Egyptians, or other ancient peoples. Book An Introduction to the Indo European Languages

Download or read book An Introduction to the Indo European Languages written by Philip Baldi and published by SIU Press. This book was released on 1983 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive linguistic survey of the Indo-European groups synthesizes the vast amount of information contained in the specialized handbooks of the individual stocks. The text begins with an introduction to the concept of the Indo-European language family, the history of its discovery, and the techniques of analysis. The introduction also gives a structural sketch of Proto-Indo-European, the parent language from which the others are descended. Baldi then devotes a chapter to each of the 11 major branches of Indo-European (Italic, Celtic, Indo-Iranian, Greek, Armenian, Albanian, Baltic, Slavic, Germanic, Tocharian, and Anatolian). Each chapter provides an outline of the external history of the branch, its people, dialects, and other relevant history. This outline is followed by a structural sketch of the most important language or languages of the branch (e.g., Old Irish for Celtic, Sanskrit and Avestan for Indo-Iranian, Latin and Osco-Umbrian for Italic). The sketch also contains the phonology, morphology, and syntax of each language. There is lastly a sample text of each language containing both interlinear and free translation. In those branches where there are special issues (e.g., the relation of Italic to Celtic and Baltic to Slavic, or the problem of archaism in Hittite), additional discussions of these issues are provided. Baldi's final chapter gives a brief outline of the "minor" Indo-European languages such as Illyrian, Thracian, Raetic, and Phrygian. Adding further to the usefulness of the book are extensive bibliographies, an up-to-date map showing the geographical distribution of the Indo-European languages throughout the world, and a detailed family tree diagram of the members of each subgroup within the Indo-European language family and their interrelationships.

Book Outlines of Primitive Belief Among the Indo European Races Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of Primitive Belief Among the Indo European Races Classic Reprint written by C. F. Keary and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Primitive Belief Among the Indo-European Races There are two roads along which students are now travelling towards (we may reasonably hope) the same goal of fuller knowledge touching Prehistoric Belief. One way is that of Comparative Mythology, which has become so favourite a pursuit with the present generation. In this method the myth is taken for the centre-point of the enquiry, and - just as a specimen in natural history may be - it is traced through all the varieties and sub-species that are to be discovered in various lands. The other method, which is an historical rather than a scientific one, may be called the study of the History of Belief. In it our eyes are for the time being fixed upon a single race of men; and it is the relationship of these people to the world by which they are surrounded that we seek to know. The following outlines of early Aryan} belief belong to the class of studies, which are dis tinctly historical in character. They are not designed to establish any new theory of the origin of belief among mankind; nor are they meant to deal with theories which relate to creeds other than the Indo European. They are essentially a record of facts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Comparative Philology: In Which the Affinity of the Indo-European Languages in Illustrated and Applied to the Primeval History of Europe, Italy, and Rome The following pages are offered as a Manual for the study of Philology. A sufficient number of facts has now been established to admit of analysis and arrangement, and to take the subject out of the hands of the mere collector and antiquarian; and I propose here to treat it as a young Science, in the full and literal meaning of the word. Of course, many works with this View have already appeared but, for the greater part, they have been confined to a par ticular class of idioms, and been written in a foreign lan guage. The present treatise comprises the whole Indo European family, according to the latest German writers, Bopp and Pott; but its principal object is to illustrate the affinity of every idiom in Europe, and to approach towards a nearer acquaintance with the early history of our quarter of the world. Book Indo European Poetry and Myth

Download or read book Indo European Poetry and Myth written by M. L. West and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2008-11-13 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Indo-Europeans, speakers of the prehistoric parent language from which most European and some Asiatic languages are descended, most probably lived on the Eurasian steppes some five or six thousand years ago. Martin West investigates their traditional mythologies, religions, and poetries, and points to elements of common heritage. In The East Face of Helicon (1997), West showed the extent to which Homeric and other early Greek poetry was influenced by Near Eastern traditions, mainly non-Indo-European. His new book presents a foil to that work by identifying elements of more ancient, Indo-European heritage in the Greek material. Topics covered include the status of poets and poetry in Indo-European societies; metre, style, and diction; gods and other supernatural beings, from Father Sky and Mother Earth to the Sun-god and his beautiful daughter, the Thunder-god and other elemental deities, and earthly orders such as Nymphs and Elves; the forms of hymns, prayers, and incantations; conceptions about the world, its origin, mankind, death, and fate; the ideology of fame and of immortalization through poetry; the typology of the king and the hero; the hero as warrior, and the conventions of battle narrative.

Not only is the subject itself full of interest, but also the treatment it has received from the philological research of our century. The various efforts made to solve the problem may very aptly illus trate an essential difference which exists between the theories of language development held in the beginning and middle of this century and those which prevail to-day, - a difference of method existing not in comparative linguistics alone, but also in other fields of philological and historical research that border on it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dative of Agency: A Chapter of Indo-European Case-Syntax In attempting to secure for my subject a certain degree of com pleteness in treatment, I have not shrunk from rehearsing many otherwise well-known and firmly established facts of philology. A reconstructive essay, however favorably circumstanced with respect to illustrative matter, must still labor under a disadvantage in that it lacks the authentic actuality of the more tangible work. In the present case I have in addition been Often confronted with that curious situation Of comparative paucity of decisive instances which not infrequently robs the argument of its cogency. Many Of the changes involved in the discussion must have taken place long prior to any literature we possess, and the remnants Of even these earliest linguistic documents are lamentably few. The Obvious necessity then of overcoming in the largest possible measure such unavoidable defects is the reason for what may appear to be prolixity.
