Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moonshine! A word that evokes images of America's outlaw heritage. Making moonshine has been such a huge part of our culture that many historians credit it as one of the cornerstones of our nations foundations. How to make moonshine? Is quite likely the very question that brought you here. A yearning to learn the traditions that are in danger of being forgotten in the modern, digital era. I wrote this book to pass along the knowledge that was taught to me in the hills of Kentucky over 30 years ago. Along the way though I developed my own style. I boiled down what I learned and created a simplified style that any beginner can follow. I've developed designs that can be used right in the comfort of you own kitchen or out back in the woods! The truth is that Moonshining, aka "Home Distilling" is a folk art that helped build this country. Together we can make it live again, and have a little fun in the process! And a quick thank you to all my readers who have helped make The Home Distiller the best selling book ever on the art and science of making moonshine. Shine On!

Book Every Home a Distillery

  • Author : Sarah H. Meacham
  • Publisher : JHU Press
  • Release : 2009-10-12
  • ISBN : 0801897912
  • Pages : 202 pages

Download or read book Every Home a Distillery written by Sarah H. Meacham and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2009-10-12 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this original examination of alcohol production in early America, Sarah Hand Meacham uncovers the crucial role women played in cidering and distilling in the colonial Chesapeake. Her fascinating story is one defined by gender, class, technology, and changing patterns of production. Alcohol was essential to colonial life; the region’s water was foul, milk was generally unavailable, and tea and coffee were far too expensive for all but the very wealthy. Colonists used alcohol to drink, in cooking, as a cleaning agent, in beauty products, and as medicine. Meacham finds that the distillation and brewing of alcohol for these purposes traditionally fell to women. Advice and recipes in such guidebooks as The Accomplisht Ladys Delight demonstrate that women were the main producers of alcohol until the middle of the 18th century. Men, mostly small planters, then supplanted women, using new and cheaper technologies to make the region’s cider, ale, and whiskey. Meacham compares alcohol production in the Chesapeake with that in New England, the middle colonies, and Europe, finding the Chesapeake to be far more isolated than even the other American colonies. She explains how home brewers used new technologies, such as small alembic stills and inexpensive cider pressing machines, in their alcoholic enterprises. She links the importation of coffee and tea in America to the temperance movement, showing how the wealthy became concerned with alcohol consumption only after they found something less inebriating to drink. Taking a few pages from contemporary guidebooks, Every Home a Distillery includes samples of historic recipes and instructions on how to make alcoholic beverages. American historians will find this study both enlightening and surprising.

A new generation of urban bootleggers is distilling whiskey at home, and cocktail enthusiasts have embraced the nuances of brown liquors. The Kings County Distillery Guide to Urban Moonshining presents whiskey’s history and culture from 1640 to today, when the DIY trend and the classic cocktail craze have conspired to make it the next big thing. For those thirsty for practical information, this book provides a detailed, easy-to-follow guide to safe home distilling, complete with a list of supplies, step-by-step instructions, and helpful pictures, anecdotes, and tips. The final section focuses on the contemporary whiskey scene, featuring a list of microdistillers, cocktail and food recipes from the country’s hottest mixologists and chefs, and an opinionated guide to building your own whiskey collection. “The moonshining world is notoriously full of orally-perpetuated misinformation and the legitimate whiskey industry is full of marketing lies and half-truths; Spoelman and Haskell have thankfully defied those traditions and released an educational book of honesty and transparency.” —Serious Eats

Download or read book The Terroir of Whiskey written by Rob Arnold and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2020-12-22 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Look at the back label of a bottle of wine and you may well see a reference to its terroir, the total local environment of the vineyard that grew the grapes, from its soil to the climate. Winemakers universally accept that where a grape is grown influences its chemistry, which in turn changes the flavor of the wine. A detailed system has codified the idea that place matters to wine. So why don’t we feel the same way about whiskey? In this book, the master distiller Rob Arnold reveals how innovative whiskey producers are recapturing a sense of place to create distinctive, nuanced flavors. He takes readers on a world tour of whiskey and the science of flavor, stopping along the way at distilleries in Kentucky, New York, Texas, Ireland, and Scotland. Arnold puts the spotlight on a new generation of distillers, plant breeders, and local farmers who are bringing back long-forgotten grain flavors and creating new ones in pursuit of terroir. In the twentieth century, we inadvertently bred distinctive tastes out of grains in favor of high yields—but today’s artisans have teamed up to remove themselves from the commodity grain system, resurrect heirloom cereals, bring new varieties to life, and recapture the flavors of specific local ingredients. The Terroir of Whiskey makes the scientific and cultural cases that terroir is as important in whiskey as it is in wine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get the eBook version FREE* with purchase via Amazon's MatchBook service. How to Make Beer is the first companion book to the best selling Home Distiller's Workbook. Many people are looking to learn the lost art of Moonshining and try to jump right into distilling but quickly learn that running a still is only half of the equation. While certainly important, distillation does not make alcohol, it only concentrates it. The real magic of alcohol is in brewing. A little known secret is that brewing a good beer is the first real step to making a great whiskey. As such I wrote this book to teach people the basics of brewing. We will cover the topic of Extract Brewing, as opposed to the more complicated All Grain Brewing which will be covered in the next book in the series. You will learn all the concepts and skills needed to not only make a good larger or ale but also what sets it apart from a distiller's beer/mash. We will discuss malts, yeasts, and different brewing techniques. Whether you want to just learn how to make your own beer or you are looking to round out your moonshine making skills, How to Make Beer will give you the essential skills you need. *Note that all books published by FOI Publishing are DRM FREE as well as MATCHBOOK ENABLED.
