Book The Holy Seed Has Been Defiled

Download or read book The Holy Seed Has Been Defiled written by Willa M. Johnson and published by Sheffield Phoenix Press Limited. This book was released on 2011 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Book of Ezra-Nehemiah, Ezra commands Yehudite men to put away their foreign wives to avoid further defiling the 'holy seed'. What is the meaning of this warning? Are Ezra's words to be understood as a concern about race-mixing or is it emblematic of some more complex set of problems prevalent in the fledgling postexilic community? Ezra's words, with their seemingly racialized thinking, have been influential in much political, religious and popular culture in the USA. It has been a backdrop for constructing racial reality for centuries, melding seemingly biblical ideologies with accepted European Enlightenment-era ideas about racial superiority and inferiority. Willa Johnson combines archaeological data with social-scientific theory to argue for a new interpretation. In this anthropological and narratological analysis, Johnson views Ezra's edict in the light of ancient Yehudite concerns over ethnicity, gender, sexuality and social class following the return from exile. In this context, she argues, the warning against intermarriage appears to be an effort to reconstitute identity in the aftermath of the cataclysmic political dominance by first the Babylonian and then the Persian empires. This book represents a postmodern interdisciplinary approach to understanding an ancient biblical socio-political situation. As such, it offers fresh perspectives on ways that interpretations of the Bible continue to reflect the ideologies of its interpreters.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Seed and the Soil explores the power of the Bible that brings about God’s transforming and liberating purposes, as well as its power as an often oppressively misused text. Characterised by a wide variety of storytelling, this book is accessible to all that read it. What People are saying about the book! Reading Pauline Hoggarth's book, one is aware that everything she writes is deeply rooted in her own life of engagement with Scripture and in her wide experience of the Bible's impact in many different cultural contexts. She is refreshingly open about both the difficulties many people have in engaging with Scripture and the difficulties Scripture itself presents. Richard Bauckham Emeritus Professor of New Testament Studies, University of St Andrews My shelves are full of books about reading the Bible, but Pauline’s new book is outstanding. It is fresh and thoughtful, grounded in personal reality and clearly the fruit of a lifetime of international ministry and friendship, and deep engagement with God’s Word. To those beginning with the Bible, Pauline passes on a wealth of practical insights, and more seasoned readers will be challenged to think more widely and more wisely. Revd Jenny Petersen Faith at QMUL [This] is a more than worthy addition to our bulging library. However, this isn’t a comfortable, intellectually stimulating book about the background to the Bible or some arcane aspect of biblical theology; it is a challenging book about engaging with Scripture . . . If someone were to ask me to recommend books to help them with reading the Bible, I would have no hesitation in suggesting How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth for help in understanding the text of the Bible and The Seed and the Soil: Engaging with the Word of God as a help in letting the Bible get under your skin and transform your thinking and actions. Eddie Arthur Kouya.net Speaking with a depth of pastoral sensitivity and cultural insight, this immensely powerful book is grounded with an understanding of the difficulties encountered by many Christians reading the Bible today. The writer's passion to help others identify and overcome their own challenges includes questions for personal reflection. Amy Roche CMS Mission Partner and Research Student at Durham University

Book Hermeneutics of Holiness

    Book Details:
  • Author : Naomi Koltun-Fromm
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2010-09-24
  • ISBN : 0199736480
  • Pages : 326 pages

Download or read book Hermeneutics of Holiness written by Naomi Koltun-Fromm and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-09-24 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book tells the story of how the biblical notions of 'holy person' or 'holy community' comes to be defined by sexual and marriage practices by various interpretive communities in late antiquity. Koltun-Fromm argues that the biblical texts already create a link between holiness and sexuality which is further interpreted by later readers. Tracing this development from the biblical texts into the fourth century, she suggests that sexual practices among Jews and Christians, particularly ascetic sexual practices, are rooted in the history of biblical exegesis and tradition as much as in any other late ancient phenomena. Moreover holiness as sexual practice thus helped these groups demarcate differentiation from each other. Hence this book establishes the importance of biblical interpretation for late ancient Jewish and Christian practices, the centrality of holiness as a category for self definition, and fourth-century asceticism's relationship to biblical texts and interpretive history.

Book excerpt: The theory of tithing is not new, but in presenting it to you as a ‘Holy Seed’ I hope to bring a fresh approach to the subject with the hope that my straggling brothers and sisters will see and enjoy the benefit of tithing. I am not a preacher; I do not have a ministry. I am only someone who seeks to find answers and God allowed me to find. This enabled me to continue His teaching about tithing. I hope and pray that His people who are called by His name will humble themselves and acknowledge tithing as “holy unto Him.”
