Book excerpt: Oblivious to the invasions, massacres and religious fanaticism that characterise the 15th century, a young girl falls in love with a noble Arabian tribal leader. But all eyes are on the Portuguese fleets in the Arabian Gulf, intent on securing the profitable spice trade. Abdulaziz Al Mahmoud weaves a tapestry of momentous historical events with stories of love, honour and nobility, while guiding us around the medieval world of Lisbon, Cairo, Jeddah and Istanbul. The Holy Sail brings to life a neglected episode of history that impacted not only the region but the world for centuries to come.

Book Sailboat Church

    Book Details:
  • Author : Joan S. Gray
  • Publisher : Westminster John Knox Press
  • Release : 2014-01-01
  • ISBN : 0664259588
  • Pages : 174 pages

Download or read book Sailboat Church written by Joan S. Gray and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is your church a rowboat church or a sailboat church? Rowboat churches depend largely on human effort. In a time of often shrinking budgets and membership, rowboat churches frantically row harder against a current, often frustrated and disappointed at their efforts. Sailboat churches, on the other hand, take up the oars, hoist sales, and rely on the Holy Spirit to guide them. Arguing that churches should be “sailboats,” author Joan S. Gray encourages readers to shift concern from the many daily, practical concerns of their local church to consider how new directions might be found by allowing the Holy Spirit to provide fresh ideas. The book includes four days of sailing prayers, quotes from Scripture, brief reflection questions, and an extensive bibliography that is arranged by theme. Perfect for groups to read together, this book will help leaders reframe their church’s mission and practice with the Holy Spirit as their guide.

Book Sailing to the Holy Land

Download or read book Sailing to the Holy Land written by Daniel Mirkin and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2018 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, unlike most studies dealing with the Crusaders' voyages by sea across the Mediterranean and their arrival at the shores of the Levant, looks at this feat from a seaman's point of view. To this end, it examines the types of ships, the sails and rigging that were used at the time, drawing on the author's personal experience and knowledge of the wind regime of the region. It also tackles the problems of transporting cargo, humans and horses, and the management of large fleets and their navigational difficulties. The book also deals with the question of landing on the flat coast of Palestine. It looks into the connection between seaside Crusader castles and the sea at their foot, taking as a case study the mooring basin below the Apollonia-Arsuf castle. This examination includes under-water digging and sub-bottom profiling using special equipment, and reveals interesting finds which call for further research. --Publisher's website.

Besides being a Pastor, Mitri Raheb continued to be involved in the theological discussion and research both at home as well as in regional and international settings. The first article on Christianity and Religious plurality was given at Fuller Seminary in 2003 during the author sabbatical as Mission Partner in Residence with the PCUSA. The second and third articles on the political and ecclesiastical context in the Arab Peninsula during the 6-7th centuries were part of a Post doctoral research that the author did during his stay at Harford Seminary in Connecticut. The article on the History of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Jordan and the Holy Land is a summary of the author's doctoral dissertation at Marburg University and of his German book "Das reformatorische Erbe unter den palaestinensern" published by Guetrsloh in 1990. The article on the Situation of the Palestinian Christian community in the Holy Land was given as lecture to several church delegation interested in the situation of the Christians of the Holy land, while the article on the Arab Spring was given at a regional conference in Lebanon. The last chapter of the book is different in nature since it is actually a short lecture given at a hearing at the Danish Parliament, Christiansburg, in Copenhagen on May 21st 2012. Diyar publisher is happy to publish these mostly unpublished articles of Rev. Dr. Mitri Raheb to coincide with his silver ordination in May 2013.

Book excerpt: Who has seen the wind? Where does it come from and where does it go? In this book I have shared a few of the many references of winds in the Bible. 1.The South wind. In Bible land the South wind is perhaps the most pleasant of all winds, but it is also the most dangerous. 2.The North wind, what is your message? And the North wind answer, I am the wind of judgement, and the justice of God. When the prophets- Jeremiah, Isaiah, Ezekiel and others foretold the judgements coming upon Israel, they almost always came from the North, from Babylon and Assyria, the rod of God's anger. For example: Ezekiel 13:13. 3.The East wind. We ask, East wind, what is your message? And the East Wind replies, I am the wind of affliction and trial. I have found the east wind to be the most penetrating, the most uncomfortable of all the winds. 4.The West wind mentioned in a very strange place in the Bible, - Exodus 10. When Pharaoh refused to let the people of Israel go. we are told that God smote the land with 10 plagues.

Tozer's first essay in this collection, which is a compilation of editorial opinions from the magazine Tozer edited for decades, The Alliance Weekly. Tozer urges us to set our sails in the will of God, for then we will certainly find ourselves moving in the right direction, no matter which way the wind blows. These articles were all born in the midst of life, in the rough seas where the children of God's voyage about. Chapters include: "The Power of Silence" "Trying the Spirits" "What Profit is in Prayer?" "Faith Rests in God's Character" "The Blessedness of a Fixed Heart" "Our Business is God" "Communion of the Saints" And 35 more essays

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We do not set out to become old. Far from it. We hardly intend even to become middle-aged. Instead we plan to live in some eternal now which will lead on to something better, something more complete than what we had before. . . . Sometime in our spiritual travels, as a complete surprise, we notice it has become winter. . . . This change has occurred, it seems, without preparation, without fair warning." So spirituality writer Emilie Griffin begins, taking us on an exploration of our later years. It is a book filled with wonderful, rich story, carefully crafted spiritual exercises and wisdom from those who have gone before us. She explores relocation, vocational changes, losing her mother, and negotiating and renegotiating her relationships with her grown children. The journey of our later years is a wondrous voyage, though turbulent at points. But it is, as Emilie Griffin reminds us, the journey we have been preparing for all along.
