Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 3 million copies sold! Essential reading for Catholics of all walks of life. Here it is - the first new Catechism of the Catholic Church in more than 400 years, a complete summary of what Catholics around the world commonly believe. The Catechism draws on the Bible, the Mass, the Sacraments, Church tradition and teaching, and the lives of saints. It comes with a complete index, footnotes and cross-references for a fuller understanding of every subject. The word catechism means "instruction" - this book will serve as the standard for all future catechisms. Using the tradition of explaining what the Church believes (the Creed), what she celebrates (the Sacraments), what she lives (the Commandments), and what she prays (the Lord's Prayer), the Catechism of the Catholic Church offers challenges for believers and answers for all those interested in learning about the mystery of the Catholic faith. The Catechism of the Catholic Church is a positive, coherent and contemporary map for our spiritual journey toward transformation.

Book The Holy Catholic Church

Download or read book The Holy Catholic Church written by Henry Barclay Swete and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Catholic Church: The Communion of Saints; A Study in the Apostles Creed This book contains the substance of courses of lectures given at Cambridge in 1913-14 to classes consisting chiefly of candidates for the ministry of the Church of England. There are few questions of more practical importance to Christian people, whether clergy or laity, than those which are raised by a study of the character, the work, and the functions of the Catholic Church. Upon the answer which we give to those questions depends our attitude, as individuals, towards the great society of which we are members. It determines for each of us whether he shall march in the war against sin and unbelief as a soldier in the army of Christ, under the command of its officers, conscious of the honour and the joy of serving in the ranks of a trained and disciplined force; or as an irresponsible adventurer, brave and loyal at heart, but a member of an irregular company, which follows no leaders but such as are chosen by itself. Download or read book Work of Love written by Leonard J. DeLorenzo and published by University of Notre Dame Pess. This book was released on 2017-02-02 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The saints are good company. They are the heroes of the faith who blazed new and creative paths to holiness; they are the witnesses whose testimonies echo throughout the ages in the memory of the Church. Most Christians, and particularly Catholics, are likely to have their own favorite saints, those who inspire and “speak” to believers as they pray and struggle through the challenges of their own lives. Leonard DeLorenzo’s book addresses the idea of the communion of saints, rather than individual saints, with the conviction that what makes the saints holy and what forms them into a communion is one and the same. Work of Love investigates the issue of communication within the communio sanctorum and the fullness of Christian hope in the face of the meaning—or meaninglessness—of death. In an effort to revitalize a theological topic that for much of Catholic history has been an indelible part of the Catholic imaginary, DeLorenzo invokes the ideas of not only many theological figures (Rahner, Ratzinger, Balthasar, and de Lubac, among others) but also historians, philosophers (notably Heidegger and Nietzsche), and literary figures (Rilke and Dante) to create a rich tableau. By working across several disciplines, DeLorenzo argues for a vigorous renewal in the Christian imagination of the theological concept of the communion of saints. He concludes that the embodied witness of the saints themselves, as well as the liturgical and devotional movements of the Church at prayer, testifies to the central importance of the communion of saints as the eschatological hope and fulfillment of the promises of Christ.

Book Recapturing the Wonder of Christmas

Download or read book Recapturing the Wonder of Christmas written by Timothy Cross and published by . This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trend in our current society is to celebrate and remove all reference to any religious, let alone Biblical basis to Christmas. 'Goodness, they are bringing religion into Christmas. What next?' is a common feeling of a busy shopper on seeing a nativity scene in a shopping centre. This precious and warm celebration has become increasingly secular over the years. Few would deny that materialism has taken over almost completely. This book seeks to counter the current trend. It explains and informs the reader as to the true meaning of Christmas, and explores the different aspects we have come to believe and know about Christmas as committed Christians. Whilst this book is definitely seasonal, its message is also eternal, for the purpose of the incarnation is eternal. 'You shall call His name Jesus, for He shall save His people from their sins.' The Good News underlying Christmas is that when the Christmas experience actually happens in us, and the living Lord Jesus is known in our hearts, then the Christmas joy is not just seasonal but everlasting.
