Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Holy Art of Winning Souls to Christ: Exemplified in the Life and Ministry of the Late Rev. M. Jones, of Trelech, Carmarthenshire Whateveris calculated to advance the cause of Christ, to serve our day and generation, especially the genera tions yet unborn, it ought to be our great concern to promote and preserve. Religious biography is in a high degree adapted to do this. Hence it is the Scriptures present to our view, so great a cloud of witnesses, that by the powerful attraction of their example, sinners might be drawn to choose the same good way, and saints stimulated, to lay aside every weight, and the sin which doth so easily beset them, and run with patience the race that is set before them, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of their faith. The written lives of holy and useful men, in successive ages of the church, and the varied circumstances of persecution, and peace - of suffering, and enjoyment, have been in strumental in a great degree, in promoting the interest of religion in the world. The young minister needs to be instructed, stimulated, and encouraged in his work, and there is nothing more calculated to accomplish this, than scripture, and other religious biographies. Ex bibit to him, and place before him in a proper light, the trials and temptations, the conflicts and the achieve ments, the victories and the rewards of those christian heroes, who were once engaged on the field of action, as he now is, and this under the divine blessing will be attended with the happiest effects; it will encourage, and animate with a laudable spirit of emulation, the young warrior to press forward, and aim at the same high mark - to aspire to glory too, and tread the same path to heaven. Book excerpt: Christians know that God loves them, but can easily feel that he is perpetually disappointed and frustrated, maybe even close to giving up on them. As a result, they focus a lot—and rightly so—on what Jesus has done to appease God’s wrath for sin. But how does Jesus Christ actually feel about his people amid all their sins and failures? This book draws us to Matthew 11, where Jesus describes himself as “gentle and lowly in heart,” longing for his people to find rest in him. The gospel flows from God’s deepest heart for his people, a heart of tender love for the sinful and suffering. These chapters take readers into the depths of Christ’s very heart for sinners, diving deep into Bible passages that speak of who Christ is and encouraging readers with the affections of Christ for his people. His longing heart for sinners comforts and sustains readers in their up-and-down lives.

Download or read book Studies in John s Gospel written by Louis Entzminger and published by Solid Christian Books. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These studies are included in the correspondence courses of the Bible Baptist Seminary of Fort Worth, Texas. Other Seminary and Bible Institutes are investigating and in several instances have accepted Dr. Entzminger’s Studies as text books in their regular courses. Dr. Entzminger’s books are just what the title implies – “Bible Studies,” and not just for reading. The Bible should be opened in the hands of the student and all references carefully studied. Invaluable to preachers, Bible teachers and to all Christian workers. Volumes of letters of highest commendation could be published concerning Dr. Entzminger’s work. We give three or four: Luther C. Peak, B.D., Th.M.’ L.L.D., says: “… more original truths brought to light in Dr. Entzminger’s Studies than anything I have read, than any Commentary or Exposition on the Bible I have ever studied.” The late Dr. Fred W. Dyson, Dean of Bible Baptist Seminary, and Director of Personnel, said: “It has been my privilege to read and teach some of the books Dr. Entzminger has written, and I say unreservedly, that I can recommend them wholeheartedly to anybody that loves Bible study. They are sound, scriptural, sane and very suggestive. No preacher or Sunday School teacher or Christian worker can afford to be without them.” Dr. Oscar Wells, Professor of Theology in Bible Baptist Seminary, says: “I have found his expositions of God’s Word – truly nuggets brought forth from the refiner’s pen.”

Book Holiness for Growing Christians

Download or read book Holiness for Growing Christians written by Allan Brown and published by . This book was released on 2019-09-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you long to be more like Jesus? Do you desire to live a holy life? Do you seek to answer the Spirit's call: "But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, 'Be holy, for I am holy'" (1 Peter 1:15- 16)? If so, this book was written for you. Unfortunately, many Christians are confused about what the Bible teaches about living a holy life. I've had students who came from good Gospel-preaching churches who were not sure they even believed in what they heard called "holiness." Either their church did not speak much about it or what they heard seemed legalistic or unattainable. It is sad that there is so much careless and sometimes contradictory teaching about this vital subject. The aim of this book is to be as biblically and contextually accurate as possible in the use of words and phrases such as "holy, holiness, sanctify, the Spirit-filled life, and entire sanctification." Further, I seek to limit my comments to what the Scriptures actually affirm. I do not attempt to answer every question that can be raised when talking about the biblical doctrine of sanctification. Rather, I seek to affirm what Scriptures affirm and leave unsaid what Scriptures do not say. I think any reader of Scripture will agree that God does command Christians to be holy. The burning question is: "What does God mean when He commands us to be holy?" This book is an attempt to answer that question.

Book The Life and Diary of David Brainerd

Download or read book The Life and Diary of David Brainerd written by David Brainerd and published by Hendrickson Publishers. This book was released on 2006 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "He was one of distinguished natural abilities, as all are sensible who had acquaintance with him. As a minister of the gospel, he was called to unusual services in that work; and his ministry was attended by very remarkable and unusual events ... He had a peculiar opportunity of acquaintance with the false appearances and counterfeits of religion; was the instrument of a most remarkable awakening ...In the following account, the reader will have an opportunity to see not only what were the external circumstances and remarkable incidents of the life of this person, and how he spent his time from day to day, as to his external behavior; but also what passed in his own heart." --Jonathan Edwards David Brainerd, an early missionary to the American Indians in New York, New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania, died in 1747 at the age of twenty-nine at the home of his long-time friend and supporter, the eminent Puritan theologian and preacher Jonathan Edwards. It is thanks to Edwards' careful preservation and thoughtful editing of his friend's Diary and Journal that Brainerd has influenced Christians all over the world for over 250 years. As he labored in what was still the untamed American frontier to bring the Gospel to the Indians, Brainerd faced many challenges, including depression, loneliness, and physical illness. Yet his genuine piety and single-minded devotion to God, both in heart and in practice, form a consistent backdrop to his turbulent inner world. This compilation offers a rare glimpse into the life of a man compelled by God to share His love with others in the most difficult of circumstances.
