Book Children and HIV AIDS

Download or read book Children and HIV AIDS written by Gary Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-11-30 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In December 1982, the Centers for Disease Control received the first reports of cases of children with HIV/AIDS. Since that time, the child welfare system, as well as other human service organizations, have been coping with and responding to the crises of children and families living with HIV/AIDS, including the considerable number of children affected by AIDS through the illness of their parents, siblings, or other family members. This volume is intended as a resource for personnel within the child welfare field serving children and families whose lives are touched by HIV and AIDS. The contributors add insight to and fuel the discussion of the fight against AIDS. They provide tools to help better serve the children and adolescents that the current epidemic so tragically affects. Chapters and contributors include: "Factors Associated with Parents' Decision to Disclose Their HIV Diagnosis to Their Children" by Lori S. Wiener, Haven B. Battles, and Nancy E. Heilman; "Custody Planning with HIV-Affected Families" by Sally Mason; "Correlates and Distribution of HIV Risk Behaviors Among Homeless Youths in New York City" by Michael C. Clatts, W. Rees Davis, J. L. Sotheran, and Aylin Attillasoy; and "HIV Prevention for Youths in Independent Living Programs" by Wendy F. Auslander, Vered Slonim-Nevo, Diane Elze, and Michael Sherraden. Originally published as a special issue of 'Child Welfare', this volume examines lessons learned from a variety of perspectives and settings, and identifies a number of continuing challenges facing the field. 'Children and HIV/AIDS' is an invaluable compendium that should be read by social workers and health specialists and all those affected by the epidemic.

Book Projecting the Future of the HIV AIDS Epidemic in Tijuana Mexico

Download or read book Projecting the Future of the HIV AIDS Epidemic in Tijuana Mexico written by Esmeralda Iñiguez-Stevens and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Referred to as an "Epidemic Without Borders," the escalating HIV/AIDS epidemic in the U.S./Mexico border region is in urgent need of attention. Although the epidemic is currently concentrated there is potential for it to advance to a generalized level. Recent studies have estimated that 1 in 125 adults aged 15-49 in Tijuana is HIV-infected, with sub-groups most affected being men who have sex with men (MSM), injection drug users (IDUs), and female sex workers (FSWs). Given this there is urgent need to targeted HIV prevention initiatives for these populations. As a result we proposed the following: 1) estimate the total number of men and women aged 15-49 years infected with HIV in 2006; 2) project the new number of HIV infected adults ages 15-49 among non-IDU/FSWs over the next 30 years; 3) evaluate the potential impact of increasing condom use between non-IDU/FSWs and their client on the HIV epidemic curve over a period of 30 years. We calculated HIV prevalence estimates among men and women aged 15-49 in Tijuana, Mexico for 2006, overall and by risk groups (MSM, IDUs, FSWs, pregnant women, low risk men and women). General demographic data such as total population size, gender ratio, and age distribution were obtained from the 2005 Mexican census. To obtain the most updated estimates of HIV prevalence, a review of published literature and available data from community-based studies was conducted. Results of this modeling project allowed us to develop a range of possible estimates for the number of HIV infected individuals, both overall and for each of the at-risk sub-groups. A mathematical model to predict the course of the HIV epidemic over a 30-year period (2006-2036) among FSWs who are not injection drug users (non-IDU/FSWs) was developed. More specifically a deterministic compartmental mathematical model was constructed based on biological (i.e., probability of HIV transmission per sexual act, prevalence of sexually transmitted infections), behavioral (i.e., number of unprotected sexual encounters), and demographic (i.e. population age distribution and population sizes) parameters. Data for the model were derived from community-based studies, literature searches, population census, and communication with Mexican public health officials. A second deterministic compartmentalized model was developed to assess the impact of decreasing unprotected sex among non-IDU/FSWs on the prevalence and incidence of HIV/AIDS. More specifically decreases of 5%, 10%, 20%, 50% and 75% in unprotected sex were modeled. Data on baseline levels of unprotected sex among non-IDU/FSWs was taken from a community-based study. Sensitivity analysis for both deterministic models consisted of developing low- and high-growth scenarios for each of the modeled estimates. The estimated overall prevalence of HIV in Tijuana Mexico among adults ages 15-49, is 0.54% (N = 4,347) (Range: 0.22% (N = 1,750) - 0.86% (N = 6,944). This means that as many as 1 in every 116 male and female adults between the ages of 15-49 could potentially be infected with HIV. However, HIV prevalence is most concentrated among sub-groups of the population such as men who have sex with men (MSM), female sex workers who are injection drug users (FSW-IDUs), female-IDUs, non-IDU/FSWs and male-IDUs. Results of the deterministic mathematical model show that accumulative HIV incidence will continue to rise over the 30-year modeled period (2006-2036). According to the low- and high-growth scenarios the HIV epidemic will become sustained at approximately 19% by the year 2036. A greater reduction in future HIV prevalence was observed when unprotected sex was decreased by greater than 50% among non-IDU/FSWs. The model also predicted that the greater the reductions in unprotected sex, the lower the level at which the epidemic would become a sustained epidemic.

Book Children and Young People Living with HIV AIDS

Download or read book Children and Young People Living with HIV AIDS written by Pranee Liamputtong and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the issues encountered by children and young people who are living with HIV/AIDS. It examines their lived experiences associated with HIV/AIDS, and studies groups of children and youngsters from around the globe. Connecting empirical information with real-life situations, the book brings together results from empirical research that relates to these children and young people. Its chapters can be used as evidence for health care providers to implement socially and culturally appropriate services to assist individuals and groups of children and young people who are living with HIV/AIDS in many societies. Many of these young people are from the most marginalized and vulnerable groups; and many have been orphaned by the death of their HIV-positive parents. Marginalized young people such as refugees, migrants and street children are most at risk due to the use of illicit drugs, their exposure to unprotected sex (in exchange for food, money and protection), and stigma associated with their marginalized lives. The impact that HIV/AIDS has on the opportunities for these young people to be able to lead healthy adult lives is considerable. This book gives a voice to these children and young people and advances our understanding of their lived experiences and needs.

Book The National Household HIV Prevalence and Risk Survey of South African Children

Download or read book The National Household HIV Prevalence and Risk Survey of South African Children written by Heather Brookes and published by HSRC Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Household HIV Prevalence and Risk Survey of South African Children forms part of the Nelson Mandela/HSRC Study of HIV/AIDS: South African National HIV Prevalence, Behavioural Risks and Mass Media Household Survey 2002. This report provides information on HIV prevalence, orphanhood, risk factors for HIV infection and knowledge of HIV/AIDS among South African children. A total of 3 988 children aged 2 to 18 years participated in the survey. Caregivers of 2 138 children 2 to 11 years of of age answered a questionnaire on the child's behalf. A total of 740 children 12 to 14 years of age directly answered a separate questionnaire. An additional 1 110 children and between 15 and 18 years of age answered a youth questionnaire. Of the 3 988 children, 3 294 (82.6 per cent) provided a saliva specimen for HIV testing. The results show HIV prevalence among children 2 to 18 years of age to be 5.4 per cent. Prevalence was nearly constant across age groups and did not vary significantly. There were insufficient numbers to compare prevalence across race groups. The prevalence was higher than expected. Further studies are necessary to verify this finding.

Book Emergent Public Health Issues in the US Mexico Border Region

Download or read book Emergent Public Health Issues in the US Mexico Border Region written by Cecilia Ballesteros Rosales and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2017-02-16 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: US-Mexico border region area has unique social, demographic and policy forces at work that shape the health of its residents as well as serves as a microcosm of migration health challenges facing an increasingly mobile and globalized world. This region reflects the largest migratory flow between any two nations in the world. Data from the Pew Research Center shows over the last 25 years there has never been lower than 140,000 annual immigrants from Mexico to the United States (with peaks over 700,000). This migratory route is extremely hazardous due to natural (e.g., arid and hot desert regions) and human made barriers as well as border enforcement practices tied to socio-political and geopolitical pressures. Also, reflecting the national interdependency of public health and human services needs, during the most recent five year period surveyed the migratory flow between the US and Mexico has equaled that of the flow of Mexico to the US--both around 1.4 million persons. Of particular public health concern, within the US-Mexico region of both nations there is among the highest disparities in income, education, infrastructure and access to health care--factors within the World Health Organization’s conceptualization of the Social Determinants of Health, and among the highest rates of chronic disease. For instance obesity and diabetes rates in this region are among the highest of those monitored in the world, with adult population estimates of the former over 40% and estimates in some population sub-groups for the latter over 20%. The publications reflected in this Research Topic, all reviewed from experts in the field, addressed many of the public health issues in the US Mexico Border Health Commission’s Healthy Border 2020 objectives. Those objectives-- broad public health goals used to guide a diverse range of government, research and community-based stakeholders--include Non Communicable Diseases (including adult and childhood obesity-related ones; cancer), Infectious Diseases (e.g., tuberculosis; HIV; emerging diseases--particularly mosquito borne illnesses), Maternal and Child Health, Mental Health Disorders, and Motor Vehicle Accidents. Other relevant public health issues affecting this region, for example environmental health, binational health services coordination (e.g., immunization), the impact of migration throughout the Americas and globally in this region, health issues related to the physical climate, access to quality health care, discrimination/mistreatment and well-being, acculturative/immigration stress, violence, substance use/abuse, oral health, respiratory disease, and well-being from a social determinants of health framework, are critical areas addressed in these publications or for future research. Each of these Research Topic publications presented applied solutions (e.g., new programs, technology or infrastructure) and/or public health policy recommendations relevant to each public health challenge addressed.

Book Sex Work and the City

Download or read book Sex Work and the City written by Yasmina Katsulis and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-09-15 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A gateway at the U.S.-Mexico border, Tijuana is a complex urban center with a sizeable population of sex workers. An in-depth case study of the trade, Sex Work and the City is the first major ethnographic publication on contemporary prostitution in this locale, providing a detailed analysis of how sex workers' experiences and practices are shaped by policing and regulation. Contextualizing her research within the realm of occupational risk, Yasmina Katsulis examines the experiences of a diverse range of sex workers in the region and explores the implications of prostitution, particularly regarding the spheres of class hierarchies, public health, and other broad social effects. Based on eighteen months of intensive fieldwork and nearly 400 interviews with sex workers, customers, city officials, police, local health providers, and advocates, Sex Work and the City describes the arenas of power and the potential for disenfranchisement created by municipal laws designed to regulate the trade. Providing a detailed analysis of this subculture's significance within Tijuana and its implications for debates over legalization of "vice" elsewhere in the world, Katsulis draws on powerful narratives as workers describe the risks of their world, ranging from HIV/AIDS and rape (by police or customers) to depression, work-related stress, drug and alcohol addiction, and social stigma. Insightful and compelling, Sex Work and the City captures the lives (and deaths) of a population whose industry has broad implications for contemporary society at large.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In her Brookings Essay, The Wall, Brookings Senior Fellow Vanda Felbab-Brown explains the true costs of building a barrier along the U.S.-Mexico border, including (but not limited to) the estimated $12 to $21.6 billion price tag of construction. Felbab-Brown explains the importance of the United States' relationship with Mexico, on which the U.S. relies for cooperation on security, environmental, agricultural, water-sharing, trade, and drug smuggling issues. The author uses her extensive on-the-ground experience in Mexico to illustrate the environmental and community disruption that the construction of a wall would cause, while arguing that the barrier would do nothing to stop illicit flows into the United States. She recalls personal interviews she has had with people living in border areas, including a woman whose family relies on remittances from the U.S., a teenager trying to get out of a local gang, and others.
