(CDC, 2020). Previous studies have found that HIV+ individuals engage in substance use and sexual substance use and sexual risk behaviors as ways of coping with HIV-related stigma (Edelman et al., 2016). Substance use and sexual risk behavior have been labeled as co-occurrences that may influence one another (Baskin-Sommers & Sommers, 2006). Concepts examined by the Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) have been associated to the HIV+ population (Kalichman et al., 1996). The Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory (RST) is a complex model designed to explore the associations of approach and avoidance processes across personality and behavior. The revised RST includes two defensive factors, fight-flight-freeze system (FFFS) and the behavioral inhibition system (BIS). Additionally, it comprises four behavioral approach system (BAS) factors: Reward Interest, Goal-Drive Persistence, Reward Reactivity, and Impulsivity (Corr & Cooper, 2016). The BAS includes behavioral concepts such as reward interest and impulsivity, behaviors that have been observed among HIV+ individuals. Studies have found an increased rate of impulsive and reward-motivated behaviors among HIV+ individuals. Researchers suggest that stigma surrounding HIV may increase engagement in impulsive behaviors among HIV+ individuals (Paydary et al., 2016). Few studies have examined the behavioral responses that influence this relationship. The Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory may serve as a prominent psychometric measure to further examine the relationship between substance use and sexual risk behavior. Specifically, BAS includes behavioral concepts such as reward interest and impulsivity, behaviors that have been observed among HIV+ individuals. This study aims to examine Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory and sexual risk behavior in HIV+ individuals with substance use history. HIV+ participants (N = 149) completed neuropsychological and functional tests, psychiatric and substance use interviews, and psychosocial and sociocultural questionnaires. Reinforcement sensitivity was assessed through the revised Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory of Personality Questionnaire (RST-PQ). Sexual risk behaviors were assessed through HIV-Risk Taking Behaviour Scale (HRBS), and substance use history was assessed through the Kreek-McHugh-Schluger-Kellogg Scale (KMSK). Analyses showed that BAS subscales of reward reactivity and reward interest were significantly associated with engagement in recent substance use (O'Connor et al., 2009). Consistent with our hypotheses, fight-flight-freeze and behavioral inhibition were not significantly associated with sexual risk behaviors and substance use history. Additional examination of the relationship between reinforcement sensitivity and risky behaviors is necessary to help further the understanding of the different factors that contribute to engagement in risk behavior in HIV and the transmission of HIV. A greater understanding of this research can allow for programs and interventions to be created to help the HIV+ population across the US.

The world now has the tools to prevent hepatitis B and cure hepatitis C. Perfect vaccination could eradicate HBV, but it would take two generations at least. In the meantime, there is no cure for the millions of people already infected. Conversely, there is no vaccine for HCV, but new direct-acting antivirals can cure 95 percent of chronic infections, though these drugs are unlikely to reach all chronically-infected people anytime soon. This report, the second of two, builds off the conclusions of the first report and outlines a strategy for hepatitis reduction over time and specific actions to achieve them.

The field of human motivation is rapidly growing but most studies have focused on the effects of motivation on individuals' personal happiness and task engagement. Only recently have theorists and empiricists begun to recognize that dispositional and state motivations impact the ways individuals approach interpersonal interactions. In addition, researchers are now recognizing that the quality of interpersonal interactions influences consequent happiness and task engagement, thus helping to explain previous findings to this end. Similarly social psychology and relationships researchers have focused on the impact of cognitions, emotions, and behaviors on people's relationships. In their work, relationships researchers demonstrate that both contextual characteristics and individual differences influence the quality of interactions. Many of these studies seek to understand which characteristics strengthen the bonds between people, encourage empathy and trust and create a sense of well-being after a close interaction. This work seeks to integrate the field of human motivation and interpersonal relationships. Both fields have seen extensive growth in the past decade and each can contribute to the other. However, no single compiled work is available that targets both fields. This is the case, in part because only now is there enough work to make a strong and compelling case for their integration. In the previous years, research has been conducted to show that motivation is relevant and important for interactions among strangers and in close relationships. In addition developmental mechanisms for these relations are identified and mechanisms by which motivation strengthens people's relationships. Finally recent work has demonstrated the many implications for interpersonal relationships, showing that motivation impacts a range of interpersonal processes from prejudice regulation and objectification of others to empathy and care. This book seeks to summarize and organize all these findings and present them in a way that is relevant to both motivation researchers and social and relationship researchers.
