Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History, Pathology, and Treatment of Puerperal Fever and Crural Phlebitis Dr. Mackintosh, a writer of great reputation, in his Principles of Pathology and Practice of Physic gives a few pages to the subject of puerperal peritonitis; and it is true that, at p. 201, new edit., 1834, he bestows much praise on the employment of leeches in the case. Nevertheless, his Views are conformable to those of Gordon, Hey, Armstrong, &c., in regard to the greater dependence to be placed on venesection, as may be seen in his summary at p. 202, and in his critical and sarcastic remarks upon Dr. Hamilton. It is perhaps useless to multiply citations here and, indeed, I am quite willing to leave the decision to the judgment of any prac titioner who will give due regard to the arguments drawn from the nature and extent of the disorder, the indications of treatment, and the comparative powers and facilities of the several remedies.
