Book The First World Series and the Baseball Fanatics of 1903

Download or read book The First World Series and the Baseball Fanatics of 1903 written by Roger I. Abrams and published by UPNE. This book was released on 2005-08 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recapturing the drama and color of this historic sporting event, Roger I. Abrams shows how the first world series (Boston Americans vs. Pittsburgh Pirates) provided a unique lens to view American life and culture at the dawn of the twentieth century. It is a fascinating story brimming with colorful, larger-than-life characters: legendary players Honus Wagner, Cy Young, Jimmy Collins, Fred Clarke, Big Bill Dineen, and Deacon Phillippe on the field; and Mike "Nuf Ced" McGreevey, "Honey Fitz" Fitzgerald, and the boisterous Boston Royal Rooters, cheering, chanting, and singing in the grandstands. This is also the story of how the post-season play gave disparate classes in society--Brahmins, industrialists, Irish politicians, Jewish immigrants--the rare opportunity to join in common support of their local teams and heroes.

Written by noted baseball historian Eric Enders, whose passion for the game shines through on every page, 100 Years of the World Series is the most detailed popular reference work ever published on the greatest sports championship in the world. The World Series has captivated sports fans since its very beginning - the hard-fought final contest between the two best teams of the year not only excites, but also creates the mythology of modern life. Baseball itself is part of our cultural fiber, and the Fall Classic is the sport's crucible, where dynasties are born, heroes made, and human nature put to the test. In early autumn, millions of fans eat, breathe, and sleep baseball, embracing the excitement and anxiety of the season - hoping to avoid the tragedy of a loss, and to exult in the glory of a championship. In this comprehensive work, Eric Enders recounts the fascinating history of the Series, describing the sensational events and outstanding performances that are forever etched into the memories of baseball fans around the world. The fall season was forever changed in October 1903, when baseball's first World Series began a postseason tradition that would mark nearly every future October through the next century. From the very start, the World Series has seen the sport's most iconic moments.

Book The 1903 World Series

Download or read book The 1903 World Series written by Andy Dabilis and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-01-27 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first World Series was a best-of-nine series between the Boston Americans and the Pittsburg Pirates, with the first three games to be played in Boston starting at the Huntington Avenue Grounds on October 1, 1903. The series started with baseball's winningest pitcher, Cy Young, throwing the first pitch, and ended with baseball's greatest hitter, Honus Wagner, striking out on the last pitch. Boston won the series, five games to three. Each game of the 1903 World Series and its key plays and players are thoroughly covered here, and the authors also pay special attention to the great significance that first World Series held for the future of baseball. Not only was the survival of the American League at stake, but baseball's place as the preeminent sport in America. The 1903 World Series drew more than 100,000 people to the ballparks, and there was no doubt about the popularity of the game. It was, as the authors point out, played by men, who, had they not been baseball players, would have been among the working class that made up most of the audience.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I'd like to thank you remaining reading dinosaurs for your interest in this project. I believe this compilation of baseball championship statistics differs from any previous attempts at documenting the history of the World Series.Since the Sports Encyclopedia-Baseball was discontinued by the Neft brothers & Richard Cohen there are few, if any, books that specifically delve into the Fall Classic with the fervor of World Series Chronology.Even if "Encyclopedia" were still available it would pale comparatively regarding the convenience "Chronology" provides. Their Baseball Encyclopedia, a wonderful and informative text to be sure, made the reader dig very deep to find information and determine how that data compared to similar numbers and teams from different eras. The World Series Chronology, as it states in the title, compares contrasts & coordinates the champions. For instance; if one were curious to know which team comes the closest to the New York Yankees record 5 consecutive titles (1949-53) one could in fact garner the answer in "Encyclopedia" after substantial investigation. But in "Chronology" it's easy to see that the Oakland Athletics string of 3 straight (1972-74) is the next franchise in line.Or if someone was interested in knowing which two teams faced one another the most times in World Series competition, again this could be found after much tracking in another publication. Finding that the Yankees and Dodgers have met 11 times would not be impossible to decipher from the "Encyclopedia". But again, "Chronology" does all the research and the information jumps right off the page for the reader. The Yanks dominated the BROOKLYN Dodgers in their 7 meetings, by winning 6 times. But since the Dodgers have moved to Los Angeles the teams have split their 4 match-ups evenly. These are just two examples of the myriad of comparisons, contrasts, & relative similarities of all of the franchises that have played the glorious game of baseball into the fall.Want to know what teams dominated a specific decade in their respective league? Or how many times? How about how many times have teams that won 100 games in the regular season have faced one another in the Fall Classic? Which team has the most sweeps? Who got there with the least amount of wins? How they all fare historically? Which league holds the edge? What effect does winning a title have on that team's city's crime rate? All of this information, combined with anecdotes, social & historical correlations, and so much more is conveniently at the disposal of the reader.Thank you for your time. I suspect that afterward, you'll thank me for mine.

Book Small Ball in the Big Leagues

Download or read book Small Ball in the Big Leagues written by James D. Szalontai and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-01-10 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The typical baseball fan yearns for one of two things: a strikeout or a home run. But most of the game takes place in between these electrifying moments, and this book discusses the importance of "small ball" to baseball. It examines the multitude of times small ball activities have secured victories through aggressive base running, sacrifice hits, squeeze bunts, stolen bases, productive outs and hit-and-run plays, as well as games in which aggressive small ball activity led to defeat. The book covers the most important small ball players, managers and teams.

Book Ebbets to Veeck to Busch

Download or read book Ebbets to Veeck to Busch written by Burton A. Boxerman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2010-06-25 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of baseball there have been countless books, but, surprisingly, relatively few about the owners, the men and women who invested their time--and, frequently, their fortunes--in baseball teams. What has been written tends to concentrate on the financial aspects of ownership or individual owners and their private lives, and pays less attention to the enduring contributions certain owners have made. Eight owners and their lasting influences on the game are the focus of this book. Charles Ebbets, Barney Dreyfuss, Helene Britton, Clark Griffith, Walter O'Malley, Bill Veeck, Charles Finley and August Busch were chosen for inclusion not only because of their larger contributions but also because they were hands-on owners who ran their teams decisively. For instance, Helene Britton proved that a knowledgable woman could successfully run a ball club, even if she couldn't vote; Bill Veeck hired the first black player in the American League, introduced exploding scoreboards and was the first owner to put his players' names on the backs of their uniforms; Walter O'Malley relocated his Dodgers to the West Coast and convinced Giants owner Horace Stoneham to bring his team out too.

Book The College World Series

Download or read book The College World Series written by W. C. Madden and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1947, the University of California and Yale University baseball teams took the field in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to play the first-1ever NCAA Division I College World Series. It was a two-day, three-game series with an attendance of fewer than 4,000. Today, it is a weeklong series held in Omaha, Nebraska, with eight teams, tens of thousands of fans and millions more watching on television. This book covers each College World Series from 1947 through the 2003 series. For Division I, the authors devote a chapter to each decade, and then richly cover each game of each series. They also provide information on standout players' careers (in baseball and other professions). The NCAA Division II and III team championships are also covered comprehensively if briefly, and an appendix features short profiles of great college coaches.

Book The Greatest World Series Games

Download or read book The Greatest World Series Games written by Warren N. Wilbert and published by . This book was released on 2011-12-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A number of authors have tried to identify baseball's premier feats, fantastic plays, and dominating performances. Because "best of" listings inevitably raise questions, differences of opinions, and even controversy, one is inclined to ask at the outset, "What makes a World Series game worthy of consideration as one of the very best ever played?" Author Warren N. Wilbert, with input from SABR members, singles out 26 World Series games worthy of being called one of the best. To select the games, Wilbert asked the following questions: Was the game a key to the outcome of the Series? Did the game keep fans in suspense? Did the game provide unforgettable moments, incredible pitching, hitting, or fielding? Were there errors or misplays that affected the outcome of the game? Did the game feature a dominating performance that directly affected its outcome? Did the outcome turn on timely execution of strategy? Game Three of the 1911 World Series, Game Two of the 1916 Series, Game Three of the 1932 Series, Game Four of the 1941 Series, Game Four of the 1947 Series, Game One of the 1954 Series, Game Seven of the 1960 Series, Game One of the 1968, Series, Game One of the 1988 Series, Game Seven of the 1997 Series, and Game Six of the 2002 Series are among those included.
