The middle-eastern theme was adopted for its allure of mystery and exoticism, and apparently it worked to draw members (350,000 from 196 temples around the world at this point), and the Shriners' legacy of service and camaraderie lives on. It's an excellent glimpse into the organization written by Shriners, for Shriners.
