This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Christian Religion and Church During the Three First Centuries, Vol. 1 of 2 The history of the Christian Church is a cheering subject for the contemplation of a Christian heart. It may indeed suit the Would-be philosopher to gather arguments against Christianity itself from the dissensions among Christians; but a deeper insight into man's nature and his destinies would read a differ ent lesson from the same page. The history of the Christian Church records, we allow, much of the weakness of human nature, but at the same time it records still more of its strength, when that strength is aided by those high principles which Christianity alone imparts to man. However weak the hu man instruments may have been, with which God wrought, their weakness proves his strength. It is almost impossible not to recognise the hand of God in the rise and progress of the Church. From its earliest infancy, when with godlike strength it strangled the serpents that assailed it, the guidance of God's providence was over it; and through oppression, persecution, contempt, and poverty, it struggled ou, under that guidance to the full ripeness of manly vigour. In the earlier ages of the Church God's protection is more visible; even the eye that seeks it not, can hardly fail to find it there, unless that eye be dimmed to all the dealings of God in the world, unless with Epicurean view it sees in God a being far from any one of as. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Christian Religion and Church During the Three First Centuries, Vol. 2 of 2 In presenting to the public the second volume of this translation of Dr. Neander's History of the Church, I may be allowed to express my regret that the promise of its speedy appearance (made at the publication of the first volume), has not been duly realized. It would be of little interest to detail the causes of this delay, as they are chiefly of a personal character, if they were not calculated to show that some of them are unlikely again to operate, so as to prevent my rapid progress in finishing my translation of the succeeding volumes of this able work. The circumstances of our own country, at the period of the publication of the first volume, left those, who took much part, as I did then, in periodical literature, but little time or thought for studies of a less stirring character, and however higher in value, of a more remote interest; and the same cause led me to presume that such a work then would find but few readers. University employments, and many other avocations which I had not anticipated, at first took me away from the subject, and every one knows with what difficulty employments once suspended are again resumed. About the beginning of this year, however, the publishers having informed me that the first volume was out of print, I determined to finish the second immediately, part of it having been printed some years ago, and the result has been the present publication. Book General History of the Christian Religion and Church Vol 1

Download or read book General History of the Christian Religion and Church Vol 1 written by Augustus Neander and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 770 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from General History of the Christian Religion and Church, Vol. 1: From the German of Dr. Augustus Neander, Translated From the Second and Improved Edition; Comprising the First Great Division of the History The translator deems it proper to state, that his labors on neander\ began, and were prosecuted to the comple tion of several successive volumes or parts of the present work, many years ago, - though not before a partial translation of the same work had already appeared in England. He has certainly no reason to regret, but rather much reason to congratulate himself, that his first translation did not find its way to the press. In 1843, Dr. Neander sent forth a second edition of the first volume of his work, embracing the history of the church in the first three centuries. In this new edition, the alterations are numerous and important. The great features of the original work, its method and spirit, are, indeed, faithfully preserved; but, in other respects, there are very decided improvements. These important changes, occurring not here and there, but through entire pages and paragraphs, have made it necessary to translate nearly the whole of the first volume anew. The translator has submitted to this labor with the more cheerfulness, as it enables him to present the work to the English reader in the form in which Dr. Neander has been pleased to express his wish that it should appear. The first section gives the narrative of the missions and persecutions of the Church; the second treats of its most illustrious representatives, and brings out their distinctive characteristics; it is entitled The Fathers of the Church of the Second and Third Centuries. The third section describes the great controversial conflict of Christianity, and contains a complete outline of the Apology of the Early Church.
