Book The History of the Cheshire Regiment in the Great War

Download or read book The History of the Cheshire Regiment in the Great War written by Colonel Arthur Crookenden and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cheshire's (22nd Foot) mustered thirty-eight battalions during the course of the war, of which fifteen saw action. Between them they served in every theatre of war: Western Front, Gallipoli, Italy, Macedonia, Palestine and Mesopotamia. Total dead amounted to 8,420, seventy-five battle honours were awarded and two VCs. The construction of this history is unusual: each theatre of war is taken separately and within that theatre the narrative unfolds chronologically, but instead of chapter or section headings there are, in the main, Battle Honour headings with dates and descriptions, some brief, some extensive, of the action which won the Honour and the identity of the battalion or battalions involved. There are a few headings that relate to less significant events, these are shown in lower case while the Battle Honour headings are in upper case. So with this history, when you look at the list of contents you are looking at the roll of Battle Honours awarded to the Regiment. Usually such lists are shown either on the title page or in a separate appendix. It is a history full of action with many personal contributions, with maps and sketches to support the narrative which often summarises the casualties at the end of an action. There are some useful appendices. The Roll of Honour is introduced with a summary showing the totals of dead, officers 378, other rank totals by battalions followed by the nominal rolls, officers grouped alphabetically, other ranks in their battalions. The 56-page list of Honours and Awards, including Mentions, is arranged alphabetically, the rank of the recipient is not given but citations are given for VC, DSO, MC and DCM awards; and the final appendix, entitled 'Mobilization', gives briefly the story of each battalion before it went overseas.

This book was released on 2013-02-04 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is one of the most valuable books in the armoury of the serious student of British Military history. It is a new and revised edition of Arthur White's much sought-after bibliography of regimental, battalion and other histories of all regiments and Corps that have ever existed in the British Army. This new edition includes an enlarged addendum to that given in the 1988 reprint. It is, quite simply, indispensible.

Book Worcestershire Regiment in the Great War Vol 1

This book was released on 2013-02-20 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arguably the finest regimental history even written. A magnificent publication it is with its profusion of maps, illustrations and photos - each page of photos contains several. The Worcesters was one of the five regiments that had four regular battalions before the war, with two special reserve and two territorial battalions. By the end of the war another fourteen battalions had been raised for a total of twenty-two of which twelve went on active service. 9,460 officers and men gave their lives, 71 Battle Honours were awarded and eight VCs one of whom, attached to the RFC, was the airman Leefe Robinson, famous for shooting down a zeppelin. Battalions served on the Western Front, in Gallipoli, Macedonia, Mesopotamia, Italy; one battalion ended the war in North Persia. Appendices provide the Roll of Honour; Honours and Awards including Mention in Despatches, with date of Gazette (for 'Companion' of the British Empire read 'Commander'); details of Badges, Colours and Distinctions of the regiment; and the music for regimental marches. Illustrations are by well-known artists depicting battle scenes including each VC-winning action - apart from Leefe's zeppelin. After considering various factors, explained in his very informative preface, the author decided to present this history as one general story in which the number of the battalion concerned is printed in the margin of the pages dealing with its deeds. Attention is paid to minor actions such as trench raids, which usually find no place in compressed official histories; they are recorded in this history. The plans illustrate the engagements recorded in the book, and are designed to depict the part played by the several battalions in their battles and to enable the visitor to the battlefields to recognise the ground on which each fight took place, as much as to make clear the general course of those actions. The book opens with a very interesting account of the regiment in the years before the war, beginning at the turn of the century, and there is a very comprehensive index of 25 pages. This is a great piece of work and must rank as one of the finest of the Great War regimental histories, many would say the finest, and I wouldn't argue.

Formed in 1689 the Regiment served widely at home and around the world in India, the Far East, the Mediterranean, North America, the Caribbean and Antarctica. Beginning in 1858, it highlights Victorian and Edwardian service in Malta, New Brunswick, Burma and India. During the First World War, the Regiment, greatly expanded to thirty-eight Battalions, serving throughout the war on the Western Front and at various times in the Mediterranean, Gallipoli, Egypt, Mesopotamia, Salonika and Macedonia. In the inter-war years the Regiment served at home and overseas in India, Palestine and Malta. During the Second World War the Cheshire's served in France during 1940, in Malta, North Africa, the Middle East in PAI Force and in North West Europe from June 1944 until the end of the war. Post-war service included Palestine, Egypt, Malaysia, Cyprus with the UN, Germany, Ireland, Belize and Hong Kong. The 200 photographs contained in this book are drawn from the regimental archives and highlight the diverse activities and places associated with the Cheshire Regiment over the past 150 years during times of peace and war. Dr Ronald Barr is a senior lecturer in history at Chester College and is Director of the College's Military Studies programme which is taught at the Cheshire Military Museum. He has a long-standing interest in military history and his previous works include: The Progressive Army: US Army Command and Administration.

Excerpt: ...by the Beloochee "cannon and matchlocks, which were answered from "time to time by Lloyd's batteries, yet not frequently, for "rapidly and eagerly did the troops press forward to "close with their unseen foes. When the Twenty"Second had got within a hundred yards of the high "sloping bank of the Fulaillee, they threw their fire at "the top of the bank, where the heads of the Beloochees "could be just seen, bending with fiery glances over "the levelled matchlocks, and the voice of the General, "shrill and clear, was heard along the line, commanding "the charge. "Then rose the British shout; the English guns were "run forward into position, the infantry closed upon the "Fulaillee with a run, and rushed up the sloping bank. "The Beloochees, having their matchlocks laid ready in "rest along the summit, waited until the assailants were "within fifteen yards ere their volley was delivered; the "rapid pace of the British, and the steepness of the slope "on the inside, deceived their aim, and the execution "was not great; the next moment the Twenty-second "were on the top of the bank, thinking to bear down all "before them, but they staggered back in amazement "at the forest of swords waving in their front! Thick "as standing corn, and gorgeous as a field of flowers, "stood the Beloochees in their many-coloured garments "and turbans; they filled the broad deep bed of the "Fulaillee, they clustered on both banks, and covered "the plain beyond. Guarding their heads with their D J843 " large dark shields, they shook their sharp swords, "beaming in the sun, their shouts rolled like a peal of "thunder, as with frantic gestures they rushed forwards, "and full against the front of the Twenty-second "dashed with demoniac strength and ferocity. But with...
