This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Illustrated History of the British Empire in India and the East, Vol. 2 of 2: From the Earliest Times to the Suppression of the Sepoy Mutiny in 1859 Notwithstanding the intrepidity shown by the British in their naval contests with the Portuguese, and the individual darin'g of most of them when danger beset, there was no promise of future military eminence in the composition or character of the first tr00ps raised in Bombay, or in the manage ment of those recruits sent out from England. The officers frequently committed outrages upon the civilians of their own countrymen, and their insolence and abuse of respectable natives was disgraceful to their profession. Some of them were even convicted of acts of petty piracy and robbery in the harbour. The non-commissioned officers unfortunately followed the example so infamously set them. The opinion which the immortal Clive gave of the state of the troops in India, previous to his time and as for the most part he found them when he arrived in India, is borne out by documentary evidence at the India-house, and by the testimony of impartial travellers. Formerly the company's troops consisted of the refuse of our jails, commanded by an officer seldom above the rank of lieutenant, and in one or two instances with that of major; without order, discipline, or military ardour. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the British Empire in India, Vol. 1 When the subject of the following volumes was first proposed to me, and I undertook to discuss it, it was my intention to produce nothing more than a connected narrative of the rise and progress of the British empire in Asia. This I believed to be a task of no great difficulty; at least I was willing to persuade myself that with my previous reading it might be accomplished with comparative ease to myself, and not without benefit to others; but I soon found that any attempt to separate the earlier from the later portions of Indian history would involve my details in a degree of obscurity, such as neither digressions nor explanations would suffice effectually to remove. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the British Empire in India, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Appointment of Lord Hardinge to the Political Extinction of the East-India Company; 1844 to 1862; Forming a Sequel to Thornton's History of India Meanwhile, as that period forms a fitting com plement to Mr. Edward Thornton's history of British India, I have ventured, with the leave of Mr. Thornton's publishers, to furnish the general reader with a connected narrative of events, which a very small amount of literary cunning should suffice to render interesting in his eyes. Should the venture prove a failure, the author, not his subject nor the reader's taste, will probably be most to blame. It may even be that in trying to avoid prolixity, he has erred from over-compression; that in seeking within certain limits to render his work complete, he has crowded his page with more incidents than the reader's memory can well digest. It would certainly have cost him far less effort to spread his matter, after the diffuse fashion of the day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of British India, Vol. 2: To the Union of the Old and New Companies Under the Earl of Godolphin's Award There is something pathetic in the publication of a posthumous work. The pathos is deepened in the case Of a writer suddenly called away in the midst of apparent health and vigour, as he stands on the threshold of a great literary undertaking. When Sir William Hunter, on January 24, 1900, penned the last words of Chapter VIII. In the present volume it was little realised, either by himself or his friends, that the shadow of death had already fallen across his path. Yet so it was. A fortnight later he was lying dead - his end so sudden, so calm, and so mercifully wrapped in the sleep of unconsciousness that he had no time to give more than a bare hint of his wishes as to the book he had left incomplete.
