Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Boston Athenaeum: With Biographical Notices of Its Deceased Founders The occasion and motives for preparing this History and the subjoined Biographical Notices will appear from the following statements. The corner stone of the new edifice for the Boston Athenaeum, in Beacon Street, was laid on the 27th day of April, 1847, with the customary formalities. At the request of Thomas G. Cary and John A. Lowell, the President and Vice-President of the institution, the Address inserted in this History was delivered. Subsequently a wish was expressed by those gentlemen, that the outline then sketched should be filled up. Although aware that the materials for the task were, some of them, difficult to be obtained, my relation to the founders of the Athenaeum, and to the institution itself, induced me to comply with their request. The early members of the Anthology Club were the first and efficient founders of the Boston Athenaeum. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. After deliberation it was voted, that an iron stair-case should be erected in the vestibule, and the principal library-room be finished in the style and manner of the original design, and the other parts of the interior be left, for the present, wholly unfinished. At a meeting of the Trustees, May 8th, 1848, a committee was appointed to consider what measures should be taken to obtain funds for the completing of the Athenaeum building. Book Men of Letters in the Early Republic

Download or read book Men of Letters in the Early Republic written by Catherine O'Donnell Kaplan and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2012-12-01 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the aftermath of the Revolutionary War, after decades of intense upheaval and debate, the role of the citizen was seen as largely political. But as Catherine O'Donnell Kaplan reveals, some Americans saw a need for a realm of public men outside politics. They believed that neither the nation nor they themselves could achieve virtue and happiness through politics alone. Imagining a different kind of citizenship, they founded periodicals, circulated manuscripts, and conversed about poetry, art, and the nature of man. They pondered William Godwin and Edmund Burke more carefully than they did candidates for local elections and insisted other Americans should do so as well. Kaplan looks at three groups in particular: the Friendly Club in New York City, which revolved around Elihu Hubbard Smith, with collaborators such as William Dunlap and Charles Brockden Brown; the circle around Joseph Dennie, editor of two highly successful periodicals; and the Anthologists of the Boston Athenaeum. Through these groups, Kaplan demonstrates, an enduring and influential model of the man of letters emerged in the first decade of the nineteenth century.

Book Understanding Emerson

Download or read book Understanding Emerson written by Kenneth S. Sacks and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2021-01-12 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A seminal figure in American literature and philosophy, Ralph Waldo Emerson is considered the apostle of self-reliance, fully alive within his ideas and disarmingly confident about his innermost thoughts. Yet the circumstances around "The American Scholar" oration--his first great public address and the most celebrated talk in American academic history--suggest a different Emerson. In Understanding Emerson, Kenneth Sacks draws on a wealth of contemporary correspondence and diaries, much of it previously unexamined, to reveal a young intellectual struggling to define himself and his principles. Caught up in the fierce dispute between his Transcendentalist colleagues and Harvard, the secular bastion of Boston Unitarianism and the very institution he was invited to honor with the annual Phi Beta Kappa address, Emerson agonized over compromising his sense of self-reliance while simultaneously desiring to meet the expectations of his friends. Putting aside self-doubts and a resistance to controversy, in the end he produced an oration of extraordinary power and authentic vision that propelled him to greater awareness of social justice, set the standard for the role of the intellectual in America, and continues to point the way toward educational reform. In placing this singular event within its social and philosophical context, Sacks opens a window into America's nineteenth-century intellectual landscape as well as documenting the evolution of Emerson's idealism. Engagingly written, this book, which includes the complete text of "The American Scholar," allows us to appreciate fully Emerson's brilliant rebuke of the academy and his insistence that the most important truths derive not from books and observation but from intuition within each of us. Rising defiantly before friend and foe, Emerson triumphed over his hesitations, redirecting American thought and pedagogy and creating a personal tale of quiet heroism.
