Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the 50th, or (the Queen's Own) Regiment: From the Earliest Date to the Year 1881Sir William Napier's The War in the Peninsula has been my standard authority for that war, and I have taken the maps from his work; I have also been assisted by The Adventures of Captain Patterson's 50th Regiment from 1807 to published in 1837, and by interesting papers at the War Office. The campaigns in India have principally been com piled from original despatches, but I have derived great assistance from the daily journal kept by Lieu tenant (now Colonel) Bellars, who was acting adjutant of the regiment during the greater part of the Sutlej campaign.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the middle of the nineteenth century, the very existence of European colonial settlement in New Zealand was under threat. With Queen Victoria's British forces stretched thinly across the globe, the New Zealand colony had to look to its sister colonial states in Australia for support. This ground-breaking work shows, for the first time in detail, how the military, social and economic brotherhood later embodied in the notion of the Anzac spirit began not on the sandy beaches of Gallipoli but 50 years earlier in the damp forests and fields of the North Island of New Zealand

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gibraltar has been one of Great Britain’s most legendary fortresses since its capture from Spain in 1704 and its strategic location as the gatekeeper of the Mediterranean Sea has given it a commanding position in the history of Modern Britain and in the history of the region. When war erupted between Britain and France in 1793, Gibraltar was already established as an impregnable fortress and as a strong source of British pride, but it was not yet a position of great strategic importance. However, during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815), Gibraltar became a powerful naval station in its own right and its soldiers became an offensive force as they frequently left the safety of their walls to attack the enemy in Europe and Africa. That combination of military and naval might transformed Gibraltar into a base capable of meeting the various demands in the Mediterranean for many years to come. This primarily naval and military history examines the growth of Gibraltar during this important time. The manuscript is not exclusively naval or military, though. The character of Gibraltar that has made it such a fascinating place to visit today includes a rich diversity of culture, religion, language, population, and history. Therefore, this work is at times a history of Gibraltarian society, of medicine and disease, of the convergence of religions, and of commerce in addition to being a history of Napoleon, Nelson, Wellington and the age in which they lived and fought.
