Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Sudbury, Massachusetts In submitting this volume to the public, we do not expect to be so fortunate as to have avoided all mistakes. We hope, however, that it contains as few as could be expected in a work relating to so broad a field of facts and so long a period of time. The following statements concerning the general plan of the work may assist the reader to a fairer estimate of its merits. The primary object of the writer has been to present the annals or general history of Sudbury. The age of the town, its importance and prominence in the past, and the fullness of its records have left no room for complete genealogies, and partial sketches of families or individuals have been given only so far as pertains to the general design of the work. The second object has been to make the book readable. If a local history is to be read it must be more than a collection of statistics, or quotations from records, or a compilation of facts given apart from their relation to each other or to events in the country at large. To accomplish the second object, whenever local events have been connected with general history, we have taken the space for the latter which we considered essential to show this connection, and thus to broaden the view of the reader and add interest to the subject. The events of the Civil War are so familiar to many now living, that it may be thought unnecessary to give even an outline of its cause or nature. But there is a generation who were not living while that war was in progress. To these it is a matter of history only, and the tales of it come to them as the tradition of the wars that preceded it. A few words, then, of introduction may be important. The war began in 1861. For many years previous there had been a disagreement between the North and the South on the subject of slavery. At the North there had been a growing sentiment that the system was wrong, and, as time passed on, opinions grew more and more positive and...

Book The Wayside Inn Its History and Literature

Download or read book The Wayside Inn Its History and Literature written by Samuel Arthur Bent and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wayside Inn, Its History and Literature: An Address Delivered Before the Society of Colonial Wars at the Wayside Inn, Sudbury, Massachusetts, June 17, 1897 This old town of Sudbury, to which on an anniversary dear to Massachusetts we make our summer pilgrimage, was one of the earliest inland settlements of the Bay Colony. The population on tide water was pressed by increasing immigration as early as 1637, and in that year it was proposed that a company should proceed westward from Watertown, owing, as the record has it, to straitness of accommodation and want of more meadow. Concord was already settled to the northward, and when in 1638 men of Watertown and Cambridge pushed their way into the wilderness, they formed the nineteenth town ship in the Colony, obtaining the grant of a tract of land five miles square, bounded east by Watertown, that part now Weston, north by Concord, south and west by the wilderness. Their route had been, however, already marked out for them. Through the south-east corner of their settlement passed the Indian trail, or the old Con necticut path, along this very road from the sea-board to Connecticut, by which the ministers Hooker, Stone, their companions and families, had already journeyed towards the settlement of Hartford. Our settlers were joined here by others coming direct from England, several of them, Haynes, Noyes, Bent. Book History of Massachusetts Classic Reprint

Download or read book History of Massachusetts Classic Reprint written by Alden Bradford and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Massachusetts Judge Minot continued the history of Massachusetts to the close of the year 1764, when the dispute began between Great Britain and the American colonies; which, after ten years, issued in an appeal to arms, in defence of civil liberty. And the great events of the revolutionary war have been ably and faithfully narrated. But the patriotic and persevering efforts of Massachusetts, for several years preceding the commencement of hostilities, have never been fully noticed. A correct statement of their zealous services in the cause of freedom seems necessary, injustice to their precious memory, and from a due regard to the present and future generations. They stated the natural rights of man, and the constitutional privileges of Englishmen, with a clearness and force, which confounded the apologists of arbitrary power, and silenced the unprincipled agents of a corrupt court. A new aera was established in political science. The foundation of civil liberty was, indeed, laid long before, in the principles recognized by Magna Charta. and at the revolution of 1689. But it was rendered immovable by the arguments and reasonings of Otis, Adams and others, in their defence of the rights of the British colonies: And all the political compacts, since framed in America, whether of this Commonwealth in 1780, or of the United States in 1788, are in conformity to the sentiments and maxims then advanced.
