Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to his enduring fame as a statesman, Winston Churchill was a Nobel Prize-winning author whose military histories offer the unique perspective of a participant in world affairs. London to Ladysmith and Ian Hamilton's March reflect his early career as a Boer War correspondent for London's Morning Post in 1899 and 1900. London to Ladysmith chronicles the Boer War's first five months, from the author's arrival in South Africa to his capture during a Boer ambush of an armored train. Churchill's gripping narrative of his escape from a prisoner-of-war camp traces a grueling journey across enemy territory and back to British lines. Ian Hamilton's March picks up the action immediately afterward, documenting the eponymous general's 400-mile advance from Bloemfontein to Pretoria. The march saw ten major battles and numerous skirmishes, culminating in the release of prisoners from the camp where Churchill himself was held. Written mostly in the field, this book offers a vivid, personal account of the conditions under which the Boer War was fought, as well as a fascinating look at the formative years of one of the twentieth century's preeminent leaders.

Book excerpt: The first shots of the Boer War were fired at Kraaipan on 12 October 1899. Winston Churchill, though he had left his Regiment, the 4th Hussars, in the previous March, was eager as ever to be within the sound of guns and wasted no time in getting himself accredited to the Morning Post as war correspondent. He sailed from Southampton aboard the Dunottar Castle on 14 October and reached Cape Town on the 31st. For the next eight months he filed his copy regularly for the Morning Post and it is these despatches which were later reprinted in book form as London to Ladysmith via Pretoria and Ian Hamilton's March. As both are comparatively short and as the one follows on from the other, they have since been published together under the title The Boer War. In both books Churchill adopts the personal approach and recounts his own experiences set against the background of the War rather than attempting to give a picture of the conflict as a whole. As he says himself, 'Sometimes it happens that these letters are devoted to describing small incidents, and often personal experience, in a degree of detail which, if the rest of the campaign were equally narrated, would expand the account to limits far beyond the industry of the writer or the patience of the reader.' What emerges is a vivid and dramatic picture of the conditions under which the War was fought and of the problems which confronted the long untried British Army when faced with the dogged and determined resistance of the Boers.

Book excerpt: The dramatic follow-up to Winston Churchill's wildly successful book, "London to Ladysmith via Pretoria," this volume details the second part of the famous British leader's Second Anglo-Boer War experiences. In this book, Churchill continues his personal narrative-as a correspondent for the Morning Post newspaper-of the second stage of the war, that which took up the first half of the year 1900. Having successfully defended Natal and the Cape Colony against the initial Boer invasion, the British forces then turned the tables and invaded the two Boer republics. Churchill's account closely follows the major part of that invasion force, led by General Ian Hamilton-hence the book's title-and the 400 mile route march by that 11,000-strong army over a period of 55 days from April to June 1900. Along the way, Churchill witnessed in person no less than seven major battles-including those at Israel's Poorte, Houtnek, Welkom, Sand River, Lindley, Doornkop (Florida), Six Mile Spruit, and Diamond Hill. In addition, he provides an account of a further 18 skirmishes, and the occupation of eight towns, including Thabanchu, Winburg, Ventersburg, Kroonstadt, Lindley, Heilbron, Johannesburg, and Pretoria. Along the way-and in typical Churchillian fashion-he describes how he was nearly captured for a second time by Boers, how he was the very first Englishman to enter Johannesburg (disguised a s civilian on a bicycle) among many other fascinating incidents. This new edition has been completely reset, contains all the original maps and illustrations, and has an additional 62 new footnotes which provide background details of personalities, events, and places for the present-day reader. It has also been fully indexed for the first time.

Book excerpt: A fascinating piece of first-person reporting from the British statesman’s early years as a war correspondent in South Africa. As a young, ambitious soldier, Winston S. Churchill managed to get himself posted to the 21st Lancers in 1899 as a war correspondent for the Morning Post—and joined them in fighting the rebel Boer settlers in South Africa. In this conflict, rebel forces in the Transvaal and Orange Free State had proclaimed their own statehood, calling it the Boer Republic. This book consists of two separate works in one volume, “London to Ladysmith via Pretoria” and “Ian Hamilton’s March.” In the former, Churchill is captured in Pretoria not long after he arrives to join the British forces—and is frustrated not by the conditions in the prison, but by the fact that he was missing the action. Churchill tells the story of how he escaped and made a daring overland crossing, traveling only at night to avoid detection. Recounting Churchill’s own adventures and observations during the conflict, this book is fascinating for both its historical and personal perspective. “We never think of Churchill as a reporter. That is our loss . . . His dispatches from the 1899-1902 Boer War in South Africa to the London Morning Post . . . sizzle with energy and daring.” —The Washington Times

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 1899, the twenty-four-year-old Winston Churchill sailed for South Africa as war correspondent for the Morning Post to report on the Anglo-Boer War. When he returned the following year, it was as a military celebrity. This book follows Churchill’s footsteps across South Africa and gives his impressions of the places he visited, the landscapes he saw, the people he encountered and the events he was involved in. Churchill’s South Africa covers the future statesman’s travels across the Great Karoo and through the green hills of Natal, his capture by the Boers, his escape to Delagoa Bay and his triumphant return to the Natal front as an officer in the South African Light Horse. It recreates the drama of the Battle of Spioen Kop and the relief of Ladysmith, and describes Churchill’s experiences during the British advance through the Free State and the Transvaal, before returning to England as a Boer War hero. Enlivened with photographs and with quotations from Churchill’s pen, this beautifully produced volume documents the travels of a key historical figure in South Africa at a critical time in its history.

Book excerpt: Fought between the British Empire and the two independent Boer republics, the Orange Free State and the Transvaal Republic, the First Boer War (1880_1881) was a rebellion by the Boers (farmers) against British rule in the Transvaal that re-established their independence. The engagements that it involved, such as they were, were small and involved few casualties.??More commonly referred to as just the Boer War, the Second Boer War (1899_1902), by contrast, was a lengthy conflict involving large numbers of troops from many British possessions (up to as many as 500,000 men), which ended with the conversion of the Boer republics into British colonies. The British defeated the Transvaal and the Orange Free State, first in open warfare and then in a long and bitter guerrilla campaign. British losses were high due to both disease and combat. It was also the war conflict which saw Winston Churchill first achieve household fame. ??The war had a lasting effect on the region and on British domestic politics. For Britain, the Boer War was the longest, the most expensive (£200 million), and the bloodiest conflict between 1815 and 1914, lasting three months longer and resulting in higher British casualties than the Crimean War. ??This unique collection of original documents will prove to be an invaluable resource for historians, students and all those interested in what was one of the most significant periods in British military history.

Book London to Ladysmith Via Pretoria annotated

Download or read book London to Ladysmith Via Pretoria annotated written by Winston Churchill and published by . This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This small book is mainly a personal record of my adventures and impressions during the first five months of the African War. It may also be found to give a tolerably coherent account of the operations conducted by Sir Redvers Buller for the Relief of Ladysmith. The correspondence of which it is mainly composed appeared in the columns of the Morning Post newspaper, and I propose, if I am not interrupted by the accidents of war, to continue the series of letters.
