Download or read book The History of Scotland Vol 3 written by John Hill Burton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-17 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Scotland, Vol. 3: From Agricola's Invasion to the Revolution of 1688 It soon become clear that it was not for nothing that the Court of England had brought over Edward Baliol from France and cherished him as an illustrious guest. He carried with him something of the lustre of fallen greatness. It was now more than thirty years Since as a boy he was the avowed heir of the crown of Scotland, and was deemed through this pros peet a fitting match for a daughter of France. The principle of hereditary succession had been scrupu lously acknowledged in the coronation of King Robert's son, though the critical condition of the country called for able leadership; and King Robert had left two nephews of mature years - one of them, Randolph, a warrior tried and true, and, now that his uncle and the good Lord James were gone, the most popular man in Scotland. Yet this very punctiliousness of the hereditary principle, if carried out, would exclude the Whole family of Bruce and carry the crown to this Edward Baliol, residing as an illustrious guest at the Court Of England. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Church of Scotland, Vol. 3: From the Reformation to the Present Time MY lord, - I have not been able to write to your grace since I received your letter; but I hope the despatches which the king sent down by my brother will please you better than any thing that I could have written, seeing you will see, that notwithstanding of all the lies with which the faction was eu tertained in Scotland, his majestyhas made it appear to all the kingdom, that he will not countenance such who did so openly attempt against his authority and against the Articles 1, which is one of the best flowers in his crown of Scotland. You will also have seen how that after the settling of the new commis sion of council, his first commands were to suppress those scandalous and seditious conventicles, which were (i am sure) too much countenanced by some whose duty should have obliged them to suppress them. And I hope the privy coun cil, as now it is constitute, will vigorously obey the king's com mands, and not make remonstrances against them, nor neglect the king's orders, which are so much in pursuance of the law, and so necessary for the peace and honour of the kingdom. Great endeavours have been used of late to alarm all England with the fears of a present rebellion in Scotland; but I hope, when those in authority shall do their duty, those seditious practices will quickly vanish and whoever will be slack in that duty, the king will let him know how much he re sents it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Scotland, Vol. 3 of 4: Translated From the Latin of George Buchanan; With Notes, and a Continuation to the Union in the Reign of Queen Anne The English ambassador, in consequence, repaired to the castle, and having shown Kirkaldy the treaty, to which Ham ilton and Huntly had agreed, he requested him also to accede. The earl of Rothes too, and lord Boyd, waited upon him, and pointing out the certain ruin which would attend resistance, entreated him to yield, but the governor, expecting assistance from abroad, refused to comply, and even if that should fail, he did not doubt of obtaining more favourable terms than his former associates had accepted. Nor was his resolution shak en, although at this time, his brother, who had returned from France with a supply of money, was betrayed into the hands of the regent, by Sir James Balfour, a wretch who had alter: nataly served, and deceived both parties. The Scots were never famed for the art of besieging, and the regent at this time, was totally destitute of the means of reducing a place of such strength as Edinburgh castle, de fended by so skilful a captain. He therefore sent to the queen of England, to desire a supply of soldiers and cannon, which she readily granted, and Sir William Drury, proceeded from Berwick on this service, in April, with a body of troops, and a train of artillery.
