Book excerpt: Sedalia, now a bustling hub of central Missouri, began as a mere interruption to a vast expanse of prairie grass. George R. Smith purchased 337 acres of treeless prairie in 1856, leading his neighbors to question his sanity. When he persuaded the Pacific Railroad to locate a depot on his land, his image--and that of his Sedville--began to change. Sedville, later Sedalia, soon became the county seat of Pettis County and earned a reputation as the "Queen of the Prairies." Sedalia chronicles the transformation of a rugged prairie town to the home of the Missouri State Fair and host to the international Scott Joplin Ragtime Festival. Sedalia's history is illustrated through more than 200 vintage images, showing the people, places, and events that shaped the town.

Book Family Maps of Pettis County Missouri Deluxe Edition

Download or read book Family Maps of Pettis County Missouri Deluxe Edition written by Gregory A. Boyd and published by . This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 271 pages with 71 total maps Locating original landowners in maps has never been an easy task-until now. This volume in the Family Maps series contains newly created maps of original landowners (patent maps) in what is now Pettis County, Missouri, gleaned from the indexes of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. But it offers much more than that. For each township in the county, there are two additional maps accompanying the patent map: a road map and a map showing waterways, railroads, and both modern and many historical city-centers and cemeteries. Included are indexes to help you locate what you are looking for, whether you know a person's name, a last name, a place-name, or a cemetery. The combination of maps and indexes are designed to aid researchers of American history or genealogy to explore frontier neighborhoods, examine family migrations, locate hard-to-find cemeteries and towns, as well as locate land based on legal descriptions found in old documents or deeds. The patent-maps are essentially plat maps but instead of depicting owners for a particular year, these maps show original landowners, no matter when the transfer from the federal government was completed. Dates of patents typically begin near the time of statehood and run into the early 1900s. What's Mapped in this book (that you'll not likely find elsewhere) . . . 5096 Parcels of Land (with original landowner names and patent-dates labeled in the relevant map) 37 Cemeteries plus . . . Roads, and existing Rivers, Creeks, Streams, Railroads, and Small-towns (including some historical), etc. What YEARS are these maps for? Here are the counts for parcels of land mapped, by the decade in which the corresponding land patents were issued: DecadeParcel-count 1820s56 1830s541 1840s1388 1850s3042 1860s32 1870s18 1880s2 1890s9 1900s3 1910s4 1920s1 What Cities and Towns are in Pettis County, Missouri (and in this book)? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Consists of 54 letters written in 1861 by newspaper correspondent Franc B. Wilkie. Part I, "The Iowa First: Letters From the War," was originally published, under that same title, in 1861. The pamphlet, now exceptionally rare, brought together the reports Wilkie sent back to the Dubuque Herald as he accompanied the First Iowa Infantry from its training camp in Keokuk, Iowa, through to the Battles of Dug Springs and Wilson's Creek, south of Springfield, Missouri (August 2 and 10, 1861). Part II of the book presents for the first time in book form Wilkie's continued correspondence on affairs in Missouri, as it was originally published in the New York Times. While Part I bubbles with the excitement of camp life among the home town boys on their first military expedition, Part II takes a more sedentary and cynical look at military affairs in Missouri under the troubled command of Major General John C. Fr?mont, with occasional forays by Wilkie into the field (Lexington, Shelbina, Springfield, Milford). Series editor Michael E. Banasik again provides extensive annotations, a detailed roster of the First Iowa Infantry, casualty figures for the major military engagements that Wilkie covered, biographies of major participants, and other important background material"--Publisher's website.

Book Family Nibbles Volume 8

Download or read book Family Nibbles Volume 8 written by Mark Jarvis and published by Mark Jarvis. This book was released on with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Family Nibbles - Volume 8, Stories of Our Pensa and Riley Ancestors" is a compilation of stories from the blog site familynibbles.com. This volume is about the lives of our Pensa, Gardella, and Riley ancestors. We were lucky to find references to the Pensa and Gardella families in Italy dating to the 1500s. The families had lived in the mountain village of Roccatagliata for generations when Antonio and Rosa Pensa departed for America in 1869. With few belongings and no English-language skills, they made a life in St. Louis. John and Ann Riley left Ireland in the late 1840s to escape The Great Famine. They tried coal mining in Pennsylvania, farming in Indiana and Iowa, and were one of the early families to settle in Pettis County, Missouri in 1859. These families left a lasting legacy. We’re the evidence. Without their pluck and perseverance and a bit of luck, we wouldn’t be reading this today.
