Yet by the time that the Football Association celebrated its centenary year in 1963, no serious academic analysis had been undertaken of the sport and of the various channels by which it had developed in different parts of the country. By the time that historians began to tackle that task, its complexity and diversity were such that it could only be undertaken in installments. Studies emerged that focused upon individual clubs and specific regions or which were limited to narrow time scales. No work examined the long century from the 1860s to the 1970s in full. This book analyses the growth of British football in all its aspectsthe developments of the football crowd, the status of the professional player, womens football, the difficult survival of amateurism, to mention but a few. It also highlights the factors that contributed to diverse developmental paths in different parts of the country. While baseball and prize-fighting attracted athletes from the lower orders of society, athletic clubs generally recruited the top sporting graduates from private colleges--except one. New York's Irish-American Athletic Club was founded by and for immigrants. Membership was not exclusively Irish--Jews, African Americans, Scandinavians, Italians, and even a handful of Englishmen joined the club, which dominated local and national athletics for more than a decade. The I-AAC laid claim to the title of best athletic club in the world following the 1908 Olympic Games, bent the rules on amateurism and challenged the ban on Sunday entertainments before succumbing to aftereffects of World War I and Prohibition.

We find that Hanborough has connections with America through the Culpepper family who were Patrons of the Living in this parish before they left for the USA. As we draw closer to the 20th century real changes start to happen; the first schools came to Hanborough, the railways were built giving people a real chance of travel. The chapters show how this small rural village evolved and how important each tradesman is in their own area. We walk through the village as it was in the 1940s and imagine ourselves knocking on doors and buying sweets at the old sweet shop. Then war arrives and many young men leave to fight and never return; Hanborough lost many of its young men in both wars. We are given an insight into the first Churchill who later became the Duke of Marlborough and the building of Blenheim Palace in 1704. The book ends with short history of the life and death of Sir Winston Churchill whose funeral cortege came to Hanborough railway station, from which he was taken through lines of Hanborough folk to his last resting place in the adjacent village of Bladon
