Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana, Vol. 1 of 3: Comprising Sketches of Parishes, Towns, Events, Institutions, and Persons, Arranged in Cyclopedic Form It has been said that, If history can be made immediately accessible, without in any way impairing its accuracy and read-ableness, a forward movement has been made in popularizing its study. It is hoped and believed that the methods herein employed will accomplish this end, and that the work will receive alike the endorsement of the serious student of history and the busy man of affairs. In the selection of titles or captions for the various topics included in the work, the compilers have endeavored to select such as a majority of readers would be likely to look for, but in order to facilitate the work of those who may seek information under some other heading, or in cases where a subject is but a subdivision of a larger theme, cross references have been freely used. Considerable biographical matter has been included in the form of brief sketches of those who have left the impress of their lives upon the state's history. In the first two volumes the aim has been to include in the biographical mention of men now living only such as have held official position, or who in some other way have been unusually promi nent in promoting the progress and development of the state or some of its institutions. In this connection it is well to state that the editor is responsible only for those biographies that. Are intimately interwoven with the history of the state along the lines above suggested. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Louisiana Every effort has been made to secure accuracy of detail; but as some errors may have crept in, the authors will be glad to receive notice of any that meet the eye of the critic. If a subsequent edition is demanded, the authors expect to enrich their work with further illustrations. Especially do they hope to obtain portraits of all the State governors - a task which it has been found impossible to accomplish in time for this edition. It may be added that all the artistic and mechanical portion of the work was done in New Orleans - the book is entirely a home product. The authors desire to thank the librarians of the Fisk, the Howard, and the State Libraries for uniform courtesy and kindness in putting at their disposal the rich historical treasures from which the materials of this work are drawn. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Louisiana, From Its First Discovery and Settlement to the Present Time Louisiana having been formerly connected with Canada and the northern parts of America while they were under the dominion of France, it seems proper to take some notice of the early settlements in those extensive countries. In 1504, within seven years of the discovery Of the Con tinent, the mariners of Brittany resorted to New foundland for the purpose of fishing. The island of Cape Breton received its name from them; and in France they were generally regarded as the discoverers of the country, though it could not be denied that the Cabots had first visited it.
