Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Norcross came to America from England in 1638. He purchased land in Cambridge, Massachusetts and lived there until 1642 when he returned to England. His son William was born in England. He, his wife Elizabeth and their four children sailed for America. The ship they were on was over-crowded and small pox broke out. William died enroute to America or soon after arriving in Philadelphia in 1699. Elizabeth lived in Bucks County, Pennsylvania with her children and in 1701 she married Stephen Sands. The family at different times lived in New Jersey, Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio. By the early 1800's they could be found in Henry County, Missouri, where many descendants still reside. Calvin Norcross and Gladys Rogers both grew up in Huntingdale, Henry County, Missouri. After their marriage they moved to a farm near Norris, which was only about five miles away. For the next twenty years, their activities centered around the farm and the town of Norris. With the advent of good roads and modern cars, both of these towns have virtually disappeared. Includes families of Rogers, Walker, Tarter, Swift, Keltner, Lancaster, Beers, Catron, Pinnell and Jones.

Book Guerrilla Warfare in Civil War Missouri Volume IV September 1864 June 1865

Download or read book Guerrilla Warfare in Civil War Missouri Volume IV September 1864 June 1865 written by Bruce Nichols and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a thorough study of all known guerrilla operations in Civil War Missouri between September 1864 and June 1865. It explores different tactics each side attempted to gain advantage over each other, with regional differences as influenced by the personalities of local commanders. The author utilizes both well-known and obscure sources (including military and government records, private accounts, county and other local histories, period and later newspapers, and secondary sources published after the war) to identify which Southern partisan leaders and groups operated in which areas of Missouri, and how their kinds of warfare evolved. This work presents the actions of Southern guerrilla forces and Confederate behind-Union-lines recruiters chronologically by region so that readers may see the relationship of seemingly isolated events to other events. The book also studies the counteractions of an array of different types of Union troops fighting guerrillas in Missouri to show how differences in training, leadership and experience affected actions in the field.

Book Westerners in Gray

  • Publisher : McFarland
  • Release : 2007-04-19
  • ISBN : 0786431121
  • Pages : 342 pages

Download or read book Westerners in Gray written by Phillip Thomas Tucker and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2007-04-19 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few infantry regiments in the Civil War compiled a more distinguished record than the Fifth Missouri. The unique blending of fiery Irish Confederates from St. Louis with rural pro-Southern Missourians forged an unshakable esprit de corps, making the unit the crack infantry regiment in the western sector. Most of Colonel James C. McCown's troops were young men in their 20s, and their good health and physical conditioning allowed them to carry out their "shock" missions throughout the region. From the perspective of the common soldiers and the unit's leaders the activities and battles of the Fifth Missouri are recounted here.
