Book Mining the Landscape

Download or read book Mining the Landscape written by Geraldine Mate and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-12 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mining was one of the primary elements of colonial enterprise in Australia and a factor in movement on colonial frontiers. In the second half of the 19th and early 20th century, mining—particularly of gold—saw transformations of the land itself, as well as in the way that people working in mining engaged with the landscape around them. Landscape archaeology provides a theoretical perspective that allows an articulation of how people created and understood the place in which they lived and worked. The impact of and narrative surrounding gold mining has meant that it has long been a focus of study, both historical and archaeological. The archaeology of mining has traditionally fallen under the umbrella of industrial archaeology, with analyses based on historical, economic and technological evidence. However this is changing. From an industrial focus, examining the remnants of mines and associated processing equipment, archaeology has progressed towards understandings of the social aspects of mining, recognising that people, not just equipment, occupied these landscapes. Nevertheless, there remains a separation between industrial/technology-based studies and purely social/ household-based archaeological studies—a division that overlooks the integration of home and livelihood. This work addresses these very challenges, using a landscape-based approach that articulates a nuanced, meaning-ladened and experienced mining landscape. Integrating the social and the industrial, the case study of Mount Shamrock, a gold-mining town in Queensland, Australia, demonstrates how this methodology can enhance our understanding of the past. The work presents an integration of social and industrial perspectives in a mining settlement, and provides an exemplar in the application of landscape theory to Australian historical archaeology. These concepts and approaches, developed in an Australian context, are of universal interest.

Book William s Story

Download or read book William s Story written by Victor Bibby and published by . This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A biography of William Bibby engineer, innovator, gold miner and pioneer who became a legend in his time. Unmarked and forgotten graves, an old pickle jar, a stamp shoe worn to a slipper, abandoned mines in Victoria and remotest Queensland, floods and rebellion. All are stops and clues along the way as Victor Bibby treads in the footsteps of a gold mining pioneer to discover long-lost relatives and the truths about his own family, bringing alive an historical account of life on the goldfields and events that made colonial history. A fascinating tale of a toolmaker from industrial England who created a new life in Australia as an engineer, innovator and gold miner before struggling against the odds to find fame and fortune as a mining pioneer in the Malayan jungle. A fascinating account of the role a larger-than-life Liverpool-born adventurer, traveller, miner and engineer played in the development and management of gold mines in Australia and Malaya, skillfully assembled from a wealth of documents by an equally diligent and energetic descendant and author, Victor Bibby. -Chris McGuigan The Kensington Review This story is excellently researched and very interesting. It is very rewarding to read Victor's story as I am sure it has had untold rewards for him as he discovered his family roots and lost family contacts and history. -John Morrow's Pick of the Week

Book excerpt: Bristol Hill is now a quiet and peaceful bush reserve. Although thousands of tons of quartz were extracted from the many mine shafts that dotted the hill, no buildings, foundations, or rusted equipment remain. This record of the history of gold mining activities at Bristol Hill was born from a desire to rediscover the forgotten history of the men who worked the many reefs that traverse the hill. The hope was to bring to life the thuds of quartz crushing stampers, the whirring of pulleys above poppet heads, the fidgeting of horses attending to whims, the voices of miners long gone, and the tales of gold nuggets liberated from deep underground.
