Book excerpt: You know you're doing something right when your nation's language is sometimes referred to by your name. So it was with Miguel de Cervantes, a Spanish novelist, poet, and playwright whose "Don Quixote "is often regarded as the first modern novel and an unquestioned classic of Western literature. "Don Quixote's" influence on the Spanish language was so profound that the language is sometimes referred to as "la lengua de Cervantes" ("the language of Cervantes"). Fittingly, de Cervantes died on April 23, 1616, the very same day Shakespeare died. Published in two volumes a decade apart (in 1605 and 1615), "Don Quixote" is the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age in the Spanish literary canon. As a founding work of modern Western literature, and one of the earliest canonical novels, it regularly appears high on lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published and is sometimes awarded the honor of "best literary work ever written."

This book was released on 2024-08-12 with total page 734 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The History of Don Quixote, Volume 1, Complete" by Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra is a cornerstone of Western literature, chronicling the adventures and misadventures of the iconic character Don Quixote. Driven by an obsession with chivalric romances, the aging Alonso Quixano renames himself Don Quixote and sets out to revive knight-errantry, accompanied by his loyal squire, Sancho Panza. Throughout their journey, Don Quixote's idealism and delusions lead him to view the world through a fantastical lens, mistaking windmills for giants and inns for castles. Sancho Panza, with his earthy wisdom and practicality, serves as a foil to his master's lofty ideals, resulting in a series of humorous and poignant episodes. Cervantes' novel is a rich tapestry of satire, adventure, and philosophical reflection, exploring themes of reality versus illusion, the nature of heroism, and the transformative power of literature. The characters' interactions and the various subplots provide a deep and nuanced portrait of 16th-century Spanish society. "The History of Don Quixote, Volume 1, Complete" is celebrated for its inventive narrative structure, enduring characters, and profound insights into the human condition. Cervantes' work continues to resonate with readers, offering timeless lessons on the power of imagination and the complexities of human nature.

Book excerpt: Don Quixote is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. It was originally published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615. A founding work of Western literature, it is often labeled as the first modern novel and one of the greatest ever written. Don Quixote is also one of the most-translated books in the world. The plot revolves around the adventures of a member of the lowest nobility, an hidalgo (""Son of Someone""), from La Mancha named Alonso Quixano, who reads so many chivalric romances that he either loses or pretends to have lost his mind in order to become a knight-errant (caballero andante) to revive chivalry and serve his nation, under the name Don Quixote de la Mancha. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who often employs a unique, earthy wit in dealing with Don Quixote's rhetorical monologues on knighthood, already considered old-fashioned at the time, and representing the most vivid realism in contrast to his master's idealism. In the first part of the book, Don Quixote does not see the world for what it is and prefers to imagine that he is living out a knightly story. When first published, Don Quixote was usually interpreted as a comic novel. After the French Revolution, it was better known for its central ethic that individuals can be right while society is quite wrong and was seen as a story of disenchantment. In the 19th century, it was seen as social commentary, but no one could easily tell ""whose side Cervantes was on"". Many critics came to view the work as a tragedy in which Don Quixote's idealism and nobility are viewed by the post-chivalric world as insane, and are defeated and rendered useless by common reality. By the 20th century, the novel had come to occupy a canonical space as one of the foundations of modern literature.

Book Approaches to Teaching the Novels of Henry Fielding

Download or read book Approaches to Teaching the Novels of Henry Fielding written by Jennifer Preston Wilson and published by Modern Language Association. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The works of Henry Fielding, though written nearly three hundred years ago, retain their sense of comedy and innovation in the face of tradition, and they easily engage the twenty-first-century student with many aspects of eighteenth-century life: travel, inns, masquerades, political and religious factions, the '45, prisons and the legal system, gender ideals and realities, social class. Part 1 of this volume, "Materials," discusses the available editions of Joseph Andrews, Tom Jones, Shamela, Jonathan Wild, and Amelia; suggests useful critical and contextual works for teaching them; and recommends helpful audiovisual and electronic resources. The essays of part 2, "Approaches," demonstrate that many of the methods and models used for one novel--the romance tradition, Fielding's legal and journalistic writing, his techniques as a playwright, the ideas of Machiavelli--can be adapted to others.
