Book The Novel An Alternative History 1600 1800

Download or read book The Novel An Alternative History 1600 1800 written by Steven Moore and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2013-08-29 with total page 548 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Christian Gauss Award for excellence in literary scholarship from the Phi Beta Kappa Society Having excavated the world's earliest novels in his previous book, literary historian Steven Moore explores in this sequel the remarkable flowering of the novel between the years 1600 and 1800-from Don Quixote to America's first big novel, an homage to Cervantes entitled Modern Chivalry. This is the period of such classic novels as Tom Jones, Candide, and Dangerous Liaisons, but beyond the dozen or so recognized classics there are hundreds of other interesting novels that appeared then, known only to specialists: Spanish picaresques, French heroic romances, massive Chinese novels, Japanese graphic novels, eccentric English novels, and the earliest American novels. These minor novels are not only interesting in their own right, but also provide the context needed to appreciate why the major novels were major breakthroughs. The novel experienced an explosive growth spurt during these centuries as novelists experimented with different forms and genres: epistolary novels, romances, Gothic thrillers, novels in verse, parodies, science fiction, episodic road trips, and family sagas, along with quirky, unclassifiable experiments in fiction that resemble contemporary, avant-garde works. As in his previous volume, Moore privileges the innovators and outriders, those who kept the novel novel. In the most comprehensive history of this period ever written, Moore examines over 400 novels from around the world in a lively style that is as entertaining as it is informative. Though written for a general audience, The Novel, An Alternative History also provides the scholarly apparatus required by the serious student of the period. This sequel, like its predecessor, is a “zestfully encyclopedic, avidly opinionated, and dazzlingly fresh history of the most 'elastic' of literary forms” (Booklist).

The task of the new contributors has been to revise and integrate the lists of 1940 and 1957, to add materials of the following decade, to correct and refine the bibliographical details already available, and to re-shape the whole according to a new series of conventions devised to give greater clarity and consistency to the entries.

Book From Fiction to the Novel

Download or read book From Fiction to the Novel written by Geoffrey Day and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1987, this title is a comprehensive study focused on experimental forms in eighteenth-century fiction. It suggests that the eighteenth-century novel is misread because it is judged with the templates of nineteenth and twentieth century versions of ‘the novel’ in mind, rather than as a standalone genre. Looking at works from well-known authors of the time this learned and lively book, gently but precisely undermines a basic category of modern literary understanding.

Book The History of Pompey the Little

Download or read book The History of Pompey the Little written by Francis Coventry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-29 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1974, this volume of The History of Pompey the Little includes a critical introduction and a biographical sketch of the author based on new material from unpublished documents, together with explanatory notes for the novel's many classical and contemporary allusions. Francis Coventry's The History of Pompey the Little was the talk of London in 1751; it continued to captivate readers throughout the century. Satirizing notable persons and events of its day, it startled the public by having as its 'hero' a Bologna lapdog, and created a new and popular form in English fiction - the 'spy'-novel with a non-human observer.

Book Reading Daughters Fictions 1709 1834

Download or read book Reading Daughters Fictions 1709 1834 written by Caroline Gonda and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-03-14 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been argued that the eighteenth century witnessed a decline in paternal authority, and the emergence of more intimate, affectionate relationships between parent and child. In Reading Daughters' Fictions, Caroline Gonda draws on a wide range of novels and non-literary materials from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, in order to examine changing representations of the father-daughter bond. She shows that heroine-centred novels, aimed at a predominantly female readership, had an important part to play in female socialization and the construction of heterosexuality, in which the father-daughter relationship had a central role. Contemporary diatribes against novels claimed that reading fiction produced rebellious daughters, fallen women, and nervous female wrecks. Gonda's study of novels of family life and courtship suggests that, far from corrupting the female reader, such fictions helped to maintain rather than undermine familial and social order.

Book The history of the English novel

Download or read book The history of the English novel written by Ernest A. Baker and published by SEVERUS Verlag. This book was released on 2011 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Conceding that the latter half of the 18th century holds little of true literary value besides the works of Fanny Burney, Ernest Baker nevertheless finds that the period "teems with interest" the public's demand for fiction and the rapidly increasing production of novels reshaped the book market, and "writers who were poor novelists but persons of strong views or feelings" spawned various subgenres worthy of exploration.
